Dell confirms Inspiron 910 netbook arriving this week
Dell's Inspiron 910 / Mini Inspiron hasn't exactly been a secret since we first heard about it back in April, but it sounds like this baby bump is about to go from open secret to bouncing bundle of joy -- Dell just confirmed to InformationWeek that the netbook is scheduled to arrive later this week. That's all we know right now -- Dell reps called those earlier specs we'd heard "pretty much rumor and speculation" -- but we'll go out on a limb and say we wouldn't expect anything less than an 8.9-inch screen and 1.6GHz Atom in there. Sorry if we killed the surprise, guys -- but remember, you can still wow us with the price tag.

about time
YES!!!!!!
about freakin time. can't wait to see what the "real" specs are.
I heard it from a Dell dude that it's gonna come it at $349 with !UBUNTU. Let's see how reliable he is...
Wow, FINALLY! Now let's see if my patience in waiting around for this bad boy will pay off. *crosses fingers*
Queue up the porn music when this thing is debuted. * Baw chicka bow wow, chicka bow wow*
Well if they release something like this in the future with an atom dual-core and 32gb of SSd, maybe more, then I will replace my eee 1000 in a year or 2.

Let us know how that turns out for you.
sam zebian. now in the stereophonic.
Even if it was a single post, still low-rank-worthy.
What a beautiful pic! I wish I had that Grade-A, perfect #2 pencil great enough to make me an A-student!
As i stated in a comment i left in the engadget's "Tip us on news" , I am a dell technician in the newly created "Your Tech Team" devision.
Last Thursday we had a gentleman from Dell's corporate office come in and talk to us about the new Inspiron 910 that we would be supporting. He stated that it would be coming out in the coming weeks and would have a price of $299.
So there you go, you now have a release date and price coming straight from the horses mouth.
i was thinking about a different region of the horse
Praise the internet! I found it!
Undeniable Turth!
Oh wait, no... it's just another fat kid stuck in the internet.
Two more things:
1) Since when is "the coming weeks" a release date?
2) Are there really THAT many grown men (and women) that like the itty bitty keyboards on 8.9" netbooks? I might was well type with the stylus on my WinMo phone. 10.1" is the only netbook I could imagine using for more then thirty minutes at a time.
I wouldn't be surprised if it was closer to $992 than $299.
OMG Phanbouy please knock it off!! You are fucking killing me here! :D :D
Ok fine, be children about it. Im just passing news from a trust worthy source along to you.
"Two more things:
1) Since when is "the coming weeks" a release date?"
I was refering to the release date that Engadget just gave you, but you had to get your snide little comment in didn't you.
Oh lighten up! It was funny. :D
I hate to be the one who writes this but... "hasn't a a secret"?
I'm assuming that they meant it "hasn't been a secret..." somebody was excited =) The 5th couldn't have could any sooner.
Baby Bump? Really you're gonna use that, Baby Bump. Have you been hangin with the Black Eyed Peas as of late? This is a nice little netbook, might have to replace this aging first gen asus craptop of mine.
you're not Flashpoint's understudy are you? stay outta gangs.
now lets see if they can actually provide the product. i ordered my lenovo s10 8/19? and its expected ship date is 9/9, yet speculation says they wont be shipping until early november at the earliest. hopefully theres a 10" netbook coming from dell...could make me cancel my s10 order.
@gw812
I'm with you on this. I just ordered an Aspire One yesterday.
I thought about cancelling to order, but not until I see some solid from Dell. Specs. and of course, pricing ?
I was incredibly excited about this machine, and then I saw the compromises they made on the keyboard. The grid layout of the first two rows of letters aren't so bad. And I can live without the ~ key.
But removing the bracket keys? I have to do some annoying key combination to type "[","]","{", or "}"? Unacceptable for anyone who does any programming. And yes, on a netbook, I'd still want to, as would many other people.
I was behind you on this one, Dell, and you blew it. Guess I'll get a Lenovo S10 instead.
why not just use keytweak .. or whatever its called, and then remove the key and take it to your local garage and get a paint job on it thus changing it to a bracket and then sticking it back in the keyboard and then doing it again on another day for the other bracket .
Very good point, but I can't see myself using this for programming. Plus I plan on getting one with Linux. Linux would boot faster and will be cheaper than XP.
Meh...
They missed the boat. IF this had debuted maybe 3 weeks ago at the price that was rumored, they would have killed in the back-to-school rush. IF. Instead, I type this message on my 4-day old Aspire One.
Y'know, at some corporations, the heads of supply and marketing actually have meetings, talk about things, bond over coffee...
wow, if it's awesome i'll send back the acer aspire one i just bought and get the mini dell :)
could someone enlighten me about whats happening with the E-slim, i really wouldn't mind picking one of those up when they are released, when abouts do you suppose / speculate the release date for that could be? thanks
The only thing that's truly of importance here is the price. There's about 1,000,000 netbooks out there with 99% the same specs and the only other difference is price.
Basically:
If this netbook hits at $300 with the expected specs, it'll be a success, not an Eee killer, but it'll start the growth of Dell's success in the netbook market.
Looks ugly.......too cheap of a plastic....dell, must see in real life, to change my view hopefully....
.. multiple bullet wounds ...cannot type properly.. help me.. he..
If I were a betting man - I'd say it was coming out on thursday. If you haven't noticed - all Dell promotions (and most releases) happen on thursdays. That's because their promos start on Thursday and end at close of business wednesday (occasionally they let them go overnight until 6am however) - So, I say look for it on Thursday.
So glad i decided to wait a day before ordering an Aspire One. Dell's going to sell every one of these they can produce.
My guess is that the price is going to be $299. I hope that dell makes a netbook with comparable quality to the msi wind and acer aspire one.
again...but can it cut cake?
your momma cuts the cheese
the cake is a lie.
Your moma's cutting the cheese wil eating cake is a lie. Now SHUT UP!
Where are the function keys? How am I supposed to use Expose' on this thing?
U realise that its not only for mac.....install compiz on linux and set a screen corner as a "hot corner" to enable it.......also there are SO MANY other cool features, which mac lacks.
Hot Corners? Really? Wow!
(you know you can do this in OSX too right?!?)
And Windows 98 SE. Who knows why Microsoft dropped that one?
Actually, compiz cripples some functions due to Apple patents, but i just took a hex editor to my compiz binaries to get them back..
@ScottishDan
No shit Sherlock ! Re-read my comment....thats why i said "U realise that its not only for mac".....ofcourse i know u can do it in Mac OS....thats why i mentioned it !
READ CAREFULLY !
This is a sick lookin netbook...lets hope the specs are as good as the design
Don't let us down Dell!
Finally a decent netbook with no "why didn't they" issues.
Searching for 910 on dell.com comes up with these few articles about the Inspiron 910:

Good I guess if you need to know it only has 2 leds, the keyboard is missing a lot of keys, and it has no cdrom.
no cdrom?
It's old news. Engadget already covered these days ago.
But what i'm curious about is that -- does anyone notice the difference between the basically two versions of leaked pictures?
Above the keyboard, what do we have?
1) A power and a square-shaped four-key console thingy on the right? (just like in this blog entry's pic)
2) OR just a power? (as in previous spy shots)
> the keyboard is missing a lot of keys
Yeah, like F11 which is essential when using Firefox on a netbook.
It's a pain to use the menus rather than a one touch key.
You really have to wonder what the Dell folks were smoking when they came up with that keyboard. Yes, certain keys can be sacrificed, and as radical the move of completely removing the function key row is, I could even live with that. But they moved or removed practically every single key aside from the 26 letters.
Too much guys. I would rather have all the keys be a little smaller, and have the main punctuation keys be closer to their default location, than the current monstrosity.
Wait, please tell me that keyboard isn't final!
I've been waiting for this forever, but I can't imagine typing on that incredibly odd alignment (not to mention the lack of brackets and quotes).
Is that seriously the final keyboard? Why are the keys aligned so... terribly?
for $299 thats what you get
If this is actually $299, I'm in for one!
I'd get an Acer One if the trackpad buttons weren't on the left/right side vs. the bottom.
I got one, and don't see that as a problem, maybe it would be if you have big hands, but the acer would be too small anyways...
I'm also looking for easy upgradability in Dell's netbook.
Those already on the market offers limited upgrade options, e.g. single ram slot, and feasibility as you have to open the back.
I was really looking forward to the Mini Inspiron until...

HAHA - I hope this is confined to the pre-release stock...
Is there finally going to be a mini laptop that has a fast(er) SSD but doesn't cost $600? And more than 4 GB flash? I need to be able to run windows if I get one, I'm cheap, and I don't want no nanokeyboard.
Hopefully this Dell rep is official spokesperson and not one of the customer service reps who have been giving widely different dates for release.
no function keys is a deal breaker for me. i launch programs using alt+f2 all the time, my most common way of closing windows is with alt+f4, on my laptop fn+f(x) provides an easy way of controlling volume and brightness, turning off wireless, and putting the computer to sleep. i'm not going to bother learning a whole slew of new keyboard shortcuts for one computer so, well done dell! you just saved me a bit of money.
alt+F2 becomes alt+Fn+s
alt+F4 becomes alt+Fn+f
What's the big deal? I would rather type those keys in because they are closer to the home row. Having to look at the keyboard to make sure i click the right function key is a hassle. They move around on every keyboard anyways.
I just sold my Eee about a month ago. Maybe come Christmas time this will succeed it :) I wonder how well it runs OS X :P
ok, what is your solution if you have to use the F11 or F12 keys?
It's going to ship with an Ubuntu Netbook edition option. I may consider getting one for my mom if it's not too costly..
..but as for me, I'm happy with my Inspiron 1420n, even though the XPS line is looking REALLY good these days.
Hey!!!!!
I spotted support docs for the Inspiron 910 on Dell's Web Site this evening. They were not there yesterday! Just type "Inspiron 910" on Dell's Main Page and you will see "Keyboard, LED, Optical Drive Support Notes". These are only a few days old according to their timestamps...!!!!!
Ubuntu version would be $349
Windows XP version is $389
I will stick with my mac..........
I'm sure that everyone cares about how awesome your crappy mac is, but this is a discussion about Netbooks not a discussion about how much you love Steve Jobs.
When will Dell hire a decent designer?
I could not wait for Dell's masterpiece so I went ahead and purchased a blue AspireOne. I absolutely love it and the touchpad with the vertical buttons do not bother me at all. This is a fantastic computer and the $349.99 I paid for it at BestBuy on their national ad last week for the 1GB/120GB made my purchase even sweeter. I am using the AspireOne right now and since I received it last week, I have used it every day, it has now replaced my four year old Dell Inspiron 700m which weighs a heavy 4.3 pounds!
Also, I love the keyboard on my AspireOne because it does not affect my typing speed whatsoever. All in all, I am very happy with my decision and I could return the computer without any penalty, but the Dell had better be incredible before I would even consider doing that. By the way, my Verizon USB727 with the EVDO RevA technology is fantastic on the AspireOne...I used it on a 500 mile Amtrak trip yesterday and it was quite amazing...the UCLA-Tennessee game on my SlingBox went off without a hitch.
I love this this technology! These "netbooks" will be this holiday season's great purchases for family computers...that is certainly my prediction!
Is that just for North America or is it for the UK too. They should release it in the UK first since we always pay 50% more than everyone else for our technology!
(my old laptop is also bricked and I can't afford a full-scale one!)
Is the 10" model available immediately too...? 8.9 is ok, but I'd like a 10" one.

"and it has no cdrom."
Thank god. Basically the only time I use a cdrom drive is when I install Windows. It annoys me that they do not make a better effort to make generic modules for the cdorm port to accept other devices on laptops.
finally got mine the other night, and wrote a bit about it here for anyone who's intersted -- http://www.jrin.net/2008_09_25/dell-inspiron-mini-9-usage-review
it's basically on par with the acer aspire one (though I like the acer better) -- the dell has a bit better battery life, better webcam in low light conditions, but the keyboard layout kinda sucks (the moved the apostrophe/double quote down by the space bar...)
