It works as advertised but it's important to point out that you can only shoot in this mode at a lower resolution (roughly 400 something pixels wide) so it's not hi-def.
Also, having owned the camera for a few months, I can tell you that this feature would be FANTASTIC if I could very quickly toggle back and forth to it (it takes a few clicks through the menu)...a dedicated button for this would be very nice. I'm realistic though, this camera is SMALL and it's not like there is a ton of room for buttons on it.
there is a little known feature in the Xacti cameras that allows you to program things like this to come up just by doing a combination of arrows on the menu button area. I called and asked them to tell me how to make it so I can switch to manual focus without always going to the menus, and they told me how to do it right away (and it was listed in the manual, i just never really bothered to look). You can program the keys you use most and assign them a hotkey. You should look into that and see if it works.
