Best Buy preps unlocked Touch Diamond for retail
So the good news here is that Best Buy's getting ready to open its arms to yet another HTC product that's impossible to find by wandering into the brick-and-mortar store of the US wireless carrier of your choice; the bad news, though, is that it doesn't seem to be the version we wanted. The Touch Diamond now has a Coming Soon page all its own on Best Buy's site, which is just fantastic considering that neither AT&T nor T-Mobile have yet bothered to pick it up -- but the problem is that the specifications make no mention of US 3G despite the fact that we know there's just such a version floating around. Our hope is that we've just caught the big box with its pants down (wouldn't be the first time) and they'll look into carrying the real deal by the time "coming soon" switches to "in stock," especially since they've given the Touch Dual the same courtesy.

Nice looking phone.
I agree. this is a great looking phone.
does anyone know how much space is required for iTunes software. Some body told me that it was over 60 MB.
Anyone else think that that is bloated ??? !!!!
@kcc
It has several GB in it, besides, it's not iTunes. It's Windows Media Player because it's a Windows Mobile phone. ANd I'm sure it's under 20 MB.
@Mike,
It's 66 MB. Bloated.
@Apple fan boys.
My guess is that none of you are involved in the Large Hadron Collider. Right ?
Did you know that the principle software used is not OSX. Do you want to guess what it is ?
Stunning idiots.
@Apple rep.
Some advice from some one older and definitely wiser than you.. finish school, try to read - real books (with paper in them), read a good independent newspaper each day and if you must comment on the support for the troops in Iraq, then please ask them how they would most like to be supported; ... every single combat personnel that I have asked, replies "Bring me home now".
I'm going to go out on a limb and say that everyone who sets their profile to private is a fanboy. I don't understand what you are responding to kccboy, maybe it's a malfunction in the commenting system.
People who have set their profiles to private for no reason:
kccboy
Apple Rep.
clak
The list goes on and on...
@kcc
I do not see the relevance of the iPhone to this article... it's about the HTC Touch Diamond (a worthy competitor to the iPhone)...
But, a couple points:
One: your posts, were the first ones that I saw, that mention the iPhone. So that leads me to believe that you are using the comment section to make sure that people see your comments first (incorrect use of comment system strike 1).
Two: You did not directly confront Apple Rep., which leads me to believe that you either don't know how to use the comment system (we'll add another strike for that offense too), or your comments are nothing more than flamebait (another strike for baiting)
So far thats 3 strikes against you...
Three: are you really older than Apple Rep.? How do you know? The word "boy" in your screen name would suggest you're a kid, and the way you are so viciously attacking people whose opinions differ from yours jives with that exegesis.
Another strike, for really... in short I guess I would call it stupidity.
Four: How much would the most economic plan (that still allowed you to utilize all of the functions of the Touch Diamond) cost per year? I bet it's very close to the same price. While I couldn't find the price for an adequate plan, I did find that the price of the phone alone is $699.99... yeah, iPhone is cheaper.
So YET ANOTHER STRIKE for failing to quote a price for the 'better phone'.
And one more...
Five: Who prices a wife? STRIKE!
Final score:
kcc: 6 strikes for six comments!
@Mike 10110101
You make a good point;
However if I am a 'fanboy'. then what I am a fan of is not clear. I certainly don't think that the object of my attractions are located in cyberspace or locked to a provided of hardware or software.
Truly I could not care less whether I run on Windows or OSX, nor could I care whether I use an iPhone or an HTC. I have had some terrible experiences with OSX abd happen to really like Vista. (I can't relate to blind, unspecific comments made about any system - but it does seem that the most stupid comments of the latter type do come from Apple supporters).
I am interested in reading the legitimate well thought-out contributions from educated well-informed, balanced persons who are skilled in communication.
The contrary persons out there who make less than objective comments... well.... they must be destroyed.
As for the profile, clak did it, so I did.... maybe I am a fanboy?
*Comment Abuse*
I'm going to do every sane person a favor and just warn you: don't even bother scrolling down any further. One of the most pathetic iPhone vs. WinMo flamewars that I've seen in a long time awaits. You've already gotten a preview of it. Sad, pathetic little people doing their best to make total tools of themselves; it sickens me!
If you must read further, please do your best not to feed the trolls, as this is obviously what they want. Just try to laugh, and try not to lose too much faith in humanity. Honestly, these people feed off your logical, on point comments and vomit fanboy excrement back in your face. They truly get a kick out of you trying to make sense of their nonsense. Don't let them win any more than they already have.
Who really gives a shit?
I'm just glad I won't miss Jasmine's birthday party!
I want!!!
Gimme gimme gimme!!!
Oh Man !!!!
How can anyone call Microsoft a "me too" company ? Is it not a fact that Microsoft came out with Mobile phone software way way way before Apple ?
Doesn't the iPhone look just like a Dell Axim 50v ? Did Apple not think to change anything ? Talk about a me too company.
Well, even though best buy has it for retail I still doubt it will boost sales very much because the price will be high, and they won't have the marketing that att or verizon would give it. If HTC really wants to boost sales they should selling exclusives to att or verizon.
they don't need too, its sold much more and faster without help of phone providers than iPhone (exclude USA market). You see - difference between real world and USA is that - that the everybody there knows what company makes and here people only know from TV adds.
Before posting this reply I will openly admit I have an iPhone.
However, my friend got one of these phones the other day, and the touch screen on these things is USELESS. I completely forgot how hard you have to push in to set normal touch screens off! It looks good, and has removed a significant amount of bloat from an otherwise bloaty operating system.
Also, on these phones, they have a seperate keyboard for people who preferred the keypad and T9 thing. Sure, it's kinda slow and useless, but they have hte option available.
you (troll) = epic fail
Why is he a troll? He is simply stating the truth, the obvious truth that MS cannot innovate without copying Apple. They are the pinnacle of a "me too" company.
I am an Apple fan, and I say WimMo is totally usable.
I think Mac vs PC is useless. The best OOS is whatever suits you best, and whatever compliments your workflow best.
Sorry, OS, not OOS
sorry to disrupt the stupid fanboy chat, but more dissapointing is the fact that as Sly Fox pointed out the pricing on this at Best Buy, is going to be outrageous.
which it is...
699.99
@ Apple Rep.
How much are Iphones unlocked again?
err that would be with a contract! this is sim free is it not?
i think you can find cheaper on eBay:-)
Oh how I love that black diamond back. Why did Sprint have to ruin it with that red back?!
iphone unlocked is more than 700 apple rep. shouldnt you know that?
You're like a bad joke!
$700 is way too much for a phone.
Crap, I haven't even gotten the phone, and I've already missed 2 calls.
Too bad, Jasmine's birthday party was awesome!
@ grull27 I'm pretty sure you'll be able to change out the back if you prefer black instead of red.
Touch diamond and pro are available in Portugal muahahah
I had it in my hands today :D
in it you say??
For $700 I would just go for a nokia n96.
Roughly the same price, but confirms this is the US 3G version.
http://www.expansys-usa.com/d.aspx?i=172644
It has US 3G?!
Ok. It's either I save $900 for books to pay for in college or I buy the HTC Touch Diamond and buy apps for it and stuff.
You decide! :D
As long as that 900 bucks isn't from government grants do whatever you'd like...
I don't know what you mean by touch grid, but iphone is by far not the first touchscreen phone
and as for multitasking WinMo kills OSX (for iphone), the only program you can multitask is the iPod app, everything else closes with no minimize, WinMo on the other hand by default the x button is minimize, and programs can work with each other much more easily, not to mention copying and pasting is a nice thing to have, and screw app store, the number of warez for WinMo is still unmatched
@AT FAT EMO
Poor Eric... How many different names have you gone though?
How pathetic must your life be that the only way to confirm your existence is by getting reactions to your asinine comments...
Such a sad time in the life of an iphone troll. Get some help, call The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline... or join the Army! You'll be the perfect soldier stupid and suicidal!
I really like the looks of this phone. I love my iPhone from a UI, PMP and Browser POV, but from a aesthetics standpoint, this is much more masculine.
This thing is $700. Granted, it's unlocked, but it's only GSM(2.xG) and only has 4GB for that price. The iPhone will retail for $600/$700, too, but that is for 8GB/16GB models, respectively. To it's credit, it does have WiFi and 3.2mpx camera, but the battery life is only 7.5 hours of talk time on GSM. Convert that for PMP and internet use (with Opera or Skyfire) and you have a pretty low total usage. Symbian's revamping by Nokia with Firefox included and a viable version of Android can't come fast enough.
Only GSM? I thought there was a CDMA version too, which would support EV-DO.. Yea, here, http://www.phonearena.com/htmls/HTC-Touch-Diamond-CDMA-phone-p_2847.html
This one is clearly GSM, but I'm guessing, like Engadget, it's also HSDPA since I doubt they would remove those radios just to sell it unlocked.
Its has 3G no worry, and the Touch PRO that will come under AT&T has slot for microSD up to 16Gb!
@ Newsguy - Please don't associate our military with that @ssclown. Our service people deserve our respect.
@ Apple Rep. - Would you please provide the ISBN for the computer book you referenced? I'm curious to see what it's like. I'll bet it has lots of pretty pictures - have you finished coloring them in?
Pretty awesome, I really want this phone, but it's $700. Fuck that.
Apple Rep. and Jubei circle-jerking each other is quite the obnoxious spectacle. Grab that bottle of Astroglide and get a room already.
"multitasking WinMo kills OSX (for iphone)"
That is why WinMo is such a bloated obsolete piece of OS. An inefficient archaic OS, with improper power management features. What you stated alone is the biggest blunder for a mobile OS. Once again Apple does it correctly.
Expect the biggest "me too" company to follow Apples lead in mobile power management.
I will keep my serene :)
However its not that bad Hummmmm hope its smaller the the iphone:)
@Haikibutsu
I agree 100%.
I use both Windows Vista/XP
Mac OSX Tiger/Leopard
iPhone
WinMo.
Just depends on what YOU want.
So stfu or gtfo fanbois :D.
did u guys really let this idiot spark a flame war?!
ok, that didnt work, scroll down to chapter 28, last subject :P
been selling it in my store for a month now.
slow as hell, Winmo's fault
Actually, its the built-in roms fault. XDA has gotten this thing flying.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=430
It is slow by default. But from what i have read, its easily corrected. Blame HTC and carriers, not WinMo.

LOL! That's your reference source? Thanks for the laugh. I'll recommend this book to my elementary-school-aged nieces and nephews - it does have pretty pictures in it!
From the introduction:
"This book is based on two ideas. One is that the magic we understand is safer and more powerful than the magic we don't. This is not a hands-on how-to book. Don't look for any instructions for taking a screwdriver to this part or the other. But perhaps your knowing more about what's going on inside all those stoic components makes them a little less formidable when something does go awry. The second idea behind this book is that knowledge, in itself, is a worthwhile and enjoyable goal. This book is written to respond to your random musings about the goings-on inside that box you sit in front of several hours a day. If this book puts your questions to rest—or raises new ones—it will have done its job.
At the same time, however, I'm trusting that knowing the secrets behind the magician's legerdemain won't spoil the show. This is a real danger. Mystery is often as compelling as knowledge. I'd hate to think that anything you read in this book takes away that sense of wonder you have when you manage to make your PC do some grand, new trick. I hope that, instead, this book makes you a more confident sorcerer."
Oh, and good luck with that $5000 a month income from the military. ;p
Apple Rep, the new clak.
Here's a protip: as long as you continue to go around pretending to be superior to everyone else, you will never gain acceptance or approval. No amount of sockpuppeting will ever change that.
But hey, who am I to judge. Maybe you were just born a tool and can't help it. I pray for your sake that you find something more worthwhile to do in your short time on this earth than to just sit in front of your computer and bash anything you don't like.
Honestly, the article had nothing to do with the iPhone. You had every opportunity to go outside, enjoy some fresh air, treat yourself to a smoothie... Too bad you wasted it by making masturbatory comments that no one cares about.
I just hope this isn't an error. Yeah the price is high, but, perhaps this is the first shot across the bow, to
the stupid carrier locked phones. If more and more retailers would start offering unlocked phones, and
really show why they are superior than the carrier locked, carrier added bloatware versions, we'd start
getting better quality phones in the States.
Here is what iPhone fanboys think of the iPhone:
"Frankly, I just want the gd thing to just frikkin work. I can keep the app store apps running for a couple of days at a time before they all go screwy again."
"FIX 3G PROBLEM!!! FIX 3G PROBLEM!! FIX 3G PROBLEM!
NOW!!!! "
"Fix the damn lag on this thing before copy/paste. Apps are sooooo close now. Take forever to bring up anything now. "
"no repeat with ME, FIX DAMN BLUETOOTH / CHRYSLER UCONNECT ISSUES
I have not been able to use my car's wireless phone features ever since the update."
"I'm going to go out on a limb here and ask that for better battery management. Being out of juice at 6 p.m. is highly uncool. "
"Why not fix the damn keyboard lag. How Mickey-Mouse is that?"
"It'd be really nice to be able to load up different themes and colors and be able to buy that program through the App Store. This is the only reason why I jailbreak my iPhone. Come on Apple, allow developers to do this. Your standard iPhone theme is so bland and passe! "
Yep, thats one hell of a phone. BTW, this was a secret attack against Gizmodo, those damn Apple fanboys :)
lol
already got one 2 months ago
@AppleRep
Except you forgot that Microsoft is the first come-out with OS ("MS-DOS" - 1980) than MAC ("System" - 1984) so i think they following.
ITS NOW AVAILABLE FOR PRE-ORDER!!!!!!
Wait, Best Buy sells unlocked phones?.... Since when? This is totally news to me! Maybe this is reason enough for me to now to go into one of their stores to check out what they got, and their corresponding prices?... Jeez, to think I was proud to say that I hadn't been in one of their stores in years, and now I hear news of this. Maybe now I can finally stop buying phones off of eBay at crazy importer prices with high "early adopter taxes", providing Best Buy sells more than just the HTC Diamond unlocked that is...
They have been for a while, at outrageous prices... Last time I was there the n95 8gb was at 599....
TBH, that's not too off what I think you'd pay for it on eBay unlocked now... I have that particular phone and bought it on eBay when it came out, for close to $700.00, almost a year ago... The fact is that unlocked phones are more expensive (upfront) than phones you'd get from your carrier (since you're paying full retail price with out the benefit of a wireless providers subsidy to offset it's full cost)! I like to look at the whole cost involved when upgrading. I've managed to keep the same plan at the same low price for some time without upgrading to a providers phone and getting locked into a 2 year contract while also getting exactly what I want in a phone each time! Have you looked at AT&T's rate plans as of late?... I kinda wanted an iPhone at one point, but stopped and did the math. At the time (during the 1st iPhone's release) it was way cheaper for me to just keep my current plan and provider while also buying the unlocked phone I really wanted. In the long run I saved a lot of money without locking myself into a carrier I didn't really want to be with for 2 years! Of course it doesn't hurt that I have Tmob, they make my choices easy for me since all of their phones suck ...
No forward-facing camera, yet also no US 3G bands? Curious.
I think it's funny that people are judging the iPhone before actually using it. I don't have an iPhone but I certainly do have an iPod touch, and it's pretty much my life now. I get bored, I just play a game on it, that I got from the Apps store. listen to music while I'm some where with WiFi (which is the downfall of the iTouch... I can't have internet EVERYWHERE I go!)
Granted, it wouldn't be as cool, if I hadn't jailbroken it. I have offline maps so I don't have to be connected to the internet, so I can just get all my apps.
Anyway, I don't doubt this HTC phone won't be good. But the iPhone and iPod touch are pretty nice pieces of technology. It's going to be extremely hard to beat.
And just so you know... I'm not an Apple Fanboy. I'm actually running Windows Vista with a machine I built myself (well, I mean.. i put it together... none too good at the soldering thing :P) I love Vista, and I think people really need to give it a chance. but I also love my iPod Touch. The combination of both has made me happy :D
ok i have an iphone and i have the touch diamond one wit att (of course) and the touch wit tmobile and well i have to give it to htc they certainly up there wit the iphone ill give them the edge cuz well i like it more =)
Am I the only one who thinks that this does NOT look like a phone at all? >.> It more closely resembles a tricorder, or a PDA or something. It just does NOT look like a phone to me. :/
Feel free to down-vote this, but I think I'll just stick with my rotary-dial phones and whatnot. :p At least they actually LOOK like a telephone!
I own an iphone. I pay 160 a month including taxes. My wife thinks i'm nuts. She pays just 99 a month at sprint for unlimited everything.
Since my iphone resets daily, takes an all nighter to sync, and is very laggy, i'm starting to see her point. Not only that, i can't even find halfway useful apps other than a couple to put on it. But it is pretty and the browser works great.
But paying that much monthly is stupid. The Touch Pro coming out from Sprint later looks like a winner. Can't wait to leave greedy controlling apple and one of the worst networks (at&t) that i've encountered.
I went to a client the other day, pulled out my iphone and was basically laughed at. Turns out its a kid's phone as i got weird looks. I can't take this thing anywhere if i want to present a professional image. I go to look at apps and i get to read reviews from 12 year olds.
I really was sucked in by the browser & screen. The iphone is to cellphones as AOL is to internet providers. I don't want this LOL phone anymore. I'm paying the eft and going back home to sprint where life is faster, more productive, and reasonable. I don't need a bloated mac OS that lags horribly, takes hours to sync, has few features, resets whenever, is unreliable, and has no useful apps.
You are nuts! I pay 160 for three lines that share 1500 daytime minutes, and unlimited everything else. (Sprint)
You and your wife could get a shared unlimited plan on sprint and pay 180 a month.
Wow, only $699? Sign me up for 10!
Hey guys!
Iphone is great, for women use....to show they have a nice phone....winmo is for MS fans, who can support that s****!
Business users, goes Blackberry (not that is an advantage....) because it actually works....though.
Now, regarding Mac vs PC....this fight is over since 2005/2006 when MAC started using intel and running windows....since that day I stoped buying MAC, because the became a regular PC.
My last version 2005 powerbook G4 can handle Photoshop twice as fast as a brand new and loaded intel Macbook Pro.....
So, stop fighting....you guys look so stupid doing that....go discuss the election, this is something that can really change this country...
best buy updated the site with the networks. US 3G
Anyone bother to think that this actually wouldn't be the GSM Diamond? Sprint's releasing the CDMA Diamond (which has more features anyways) around Sept 14th - and Best Buy would be selling them. No one has bothered to mention that, and this article doesn't even mention any specific info on why this would be considered a GSM Diamond. Geez. =)
Ok - nevermind - just noticed they updated it. My apologies.... but the CDMA version will be out very soon.
All of you WinMo vs. iPhone flamewar participants - SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!
If you're not here to comment (in direct terms) about the nature of the article posting i.e. Best Buy (potentially) selling the Touch Diamond, then go somewhere else and be butt-hurt there.
so $700 is a confirmed price? looks like a nice device but thats a pretty big price tag....is it worth it? can anybody shed some light? i am definately going to get the htc dream android phone late this month, does this phone even compare to the dream? please those more informed than me comment back at me. thanks.
