Chevy Volt rolls out into the open at long last

It's official public debut may still only be coming next week, but it looks like GM has finally decided to give up on the carefully-chosen teaser shots and let the hotly-anticipated Volt out in the open for all the internet to see. No doubt to the dismay of some, the would-be next Prius sure looks a good deal different than the far more angular prototype we've all come to know over the past little while, although we can't say we're exactly surprised given GM's mass-market hopes for the car. Still, it is quite the milestone for the auto industry, and hopefully only the start of things to come. Be sure to hit up Autoblog for a gallery full of more pics of your favorite GM execs -- and the Volt, too.

If they were really serious about producing a vehicle that would lessen dependence on oil you'd think they could come up with something that could sell at WAY less than $40,000. At that price, and good luck getting one anywhere NEAR that price, how many people will be buying them (enjoy your time at the dealership as they play their games)? They've limited their market to those that make well over $100,000. The Prius and Accord Hybrids are/were excellent examples. Good luck finding one of those anywhere near their "list price" when they were first introduced. At least you could justify in your mind buying from a manufacturer who consistently comes up with quality vehicles (Toyota, Honda). But GM?? No thanks, I'll pass.
Good ole American know-how.... They know how to squeeze as much profit out as they can while trumpeting the "USA USA USA" patriotic theme.
Sad.. when will corporate America realize it's almost too late?
"It's official public debut" --> "Its official public debut"
Where'd those badass fenders go? Take my name off the waiting list...
Congrats GM. I've been holding out on buying a new car just for the Volt. Then you sucked the life out of it and now it's a battery powered crap-fest on wheels.
Seriously you morons, did you think people were excited about the Volt because of the batteries? They were excited because it looked freaking hot and it could go 40 miles without using any gas.
I wanted to buy the Volt because the Prius is a dorkmobile supreme. But you've managed to take away my one affordable, cool-looking, green alternative and replaced it with what probably seemed "cool" to the 60+ year old board member who finally signed off on it after making "design adjustments" to make it "peachy keen".
Let me get this straight. We wait for so many years for a bad-ass electric car from GM. At one fell swoop, they screw the whole design up to make it look like a Toyota knockoff with a battery. Great job GM! At least the pictures tell us which morons were responsible for this failure.
EXACTLY! The stupid morons totally ******* the whole design up. The volt was popular because it DIDN'T LOOK LIKE A PRIUS!
uh... one question. what the hell was wrong with the original concept design!?!? the redesign looks so... plain.
GM is going down the drain. To bring out a concept and completely change the look of the vehicle was pretty stupid on their part. I remember going to the LA Auto Show in 1988 and seeing the 1993 Camaro conecpt. Guess what? The production vehicle was very close in design. It sold millions. This will not happen for the Volt. As Ron White once said, "You can't fix stupid."
is this like a gay car or something ?
These images have instantly destroyed any hope there may have been that this particular electric car could be a success.
I just want it to be affordable. They can cool it up for the Hollywood bunch later. Just make it reliable and get it to us in mass.
It looks like a 'Hair Club for Men' commercial.
WHAT A HUNK OF #$%@, that looks nothing like the concept, well maybe a little in the grille, and the dude next to it is far from anyone i wana hang with....big ups to chevy for creating another hunk to block my 70 mach 1 in traffic
