6-cell Eee PC 1000H price plummets to $449
Think $500 is a good deal for the 8.9-inch Eee PC 901? Good, then you'll love $449 for the 10-inch Eee PC 1000H. That's already $200 below the original $650 launch price. That sum takes home 1GB RAM, a 6-cell battery, and XP loaded onto an 80GB hard disk.
P.S. Amazon says it'll ship in 1 to 2 months (huh?) but Mwave and others seem to have it in stock, ready to ship now.
[Thanks to Jeremy and everyone who sent this in]

Lower prices are always welcomed. : )
Thank goodness for the solid competition out there that is pushing Asus.
LondonConsultant @ Sep 9th 2008 9:08AM
I suspect the 1000H's competition is the 901...
Andrew @ Sep 9th 2008 9:41AM
Definitely need to thank Acer for that one now that they've dropped their 6cell Aspire One to $399..
I think the Aspire's keyboard is more solid, but still uses pata instead of sata (which the Asus 1000H uses). Having sata makes upgrading to a REAL SSD in a year or so that much nicer.
iHoppipolla @ Sep 9th 2008 8:58AM
Now, it's a netbook.
kccboy2004 @ Sep 9th 2008 10:05AM
idiot. a netbook is not defined by price, it is defined by intended use.
these ignorant comments are so lamentable. I blame the school system and some parents.

Costco has the same price also.

I might order one if they're not all sold out before payday.
Neeko @ Sep 9th 2008 9:03AM
WOW this or the ASPIRE ONE? what to do? i could use a new 10in lappy.
Alex @ Sep 9th 2008 9:05AM
tempting though Im going to wait for the acer the only drawback to that I can agree with is the awkward right and left click buttons
M7 @ Sep 9th 2008 9:07AM
Does anyone know if the linux distro from Asus comes in the box as well (or is downloadable to this) or XP only?
crsh @ Sep 9th 2008 9:12AM
The 1000H (with a 80 GB hard drive) comes with XP, the 1000 (with a 40 GB SSD) comes with Xandros.
You can easily install any distro on your 1000H though.
nzo @ Sep 9th 2008 9:12AM
It was this price on zzf before, what gives?
Shane @ Sep 9th 2008 9:24AM
I used to love you, MSI Wind, I really did! Now it's so hard to do so :'(

MSI Wind still runs leopard better

Mwave is also on ebay, so you can use the live cashback deal to take off 8%.
mugs @ Sep 9th 2008 9:34AM
What about the version with the SSD?
James @ Sep 9th 2008 11:30AM
I have to agree with mugs this would be a better package if it had SSD rather then HDD
Craig @ Sep 9th 2008 9:34AM
I'll probably get rated down for this comment, but here goes. I'm not ungrateful for these new options...light, cheap laptops are truly a godsend...but I'm holding out for a 10" netbook with a 64GB SSD for $299 before I jump in. Why? I want the thing to be as durable and run as quietly and coolly as possible, and that means no HDD. But I also want enough space for XP and some media content, too. Yes, I do want it all...that's what makes me a consumer. ;-)
Sean @ Sep 9th 2008 12:02PM
I don't mean to be a debbie downer, but it's going to be a year or two before SSD's cost that much by themselves.
If you're cool with waiting that long more power to you, spend your money the way you want to.
Unknown @ Sep 9th 2008 9:38AM
sounds like they're clearing out stock for some new models. more eees. exactly what we need.
Andrew @ Sep 9th 2008 10:17AM
weee don't neeed aneeemore, pleeese!
KilgoreTrout @ Sep 9th 2008 9:40AM
Still some steps behind the MSI Wind and the Medion mini Akoya, but the distance is'nt so wide anymore.
Now Asus has just to match the performance (and possibly the design) of the to best in the netbook class.
Keep on trying.
Ryan @ Sep 9th 2008 12:53PM
I wouldn't call the MSI Wind the best in the netbook class. Maybe if the models they're shipping now were like the first wave, then yeah, I'd agree, but the ones they're shipping now have subpar parts and construction.
deslock @ Sep 9th 2008 10:06AM
Despite its being 50% heavier and 33% more than I paid for my AA1, I'm tempted by its larger screen, bigger battery, and better touchpad.
Why does this thing weigh 3.2 pounds when a 6-cell MSI Wind weighs 2.6 pounds? (the Lenovo S10 would also weigh ~2.6 pounds if it had a 6-cell)
How noticeable is the HDD noise and vibration?
How smoothly does it handle full screen video? Surprisingly enough, the AA1 is fine for h.264 via VLC, but it sometimes drops frames playing flash. youtube videos are smooth, but The Daily Show full episodes get a little chunky:

A. V-G @ Sep 9th 2008 10:18AM
Now's the time to lower the price of the 1000 model too... What are you waiting for, ASUS?
scottjl @ Sep 9th 2008 10:23AM
if it's hit costco you know they're dumping the remaining stock.. i'd guess something else will be out soon..
Chuck @ Sep 9th 2008 10:47AM
Remember the old "Choose a Vista" Mac commercial? I find it easily applicable to Asus' EEEs, but you'll need a bigger wheel.
David @ Sep 9th 2008 11:00AM
hooray for getting your affilliate link posted to engadget! i bet that guy will make a ton of commission off it
Brady @ Sep 9th 2008 2:21PM
This is awesome and almost makes me regret buying my MSI Wind when I did, although it doesn't at all since my Wind does all I need it to do. I'm just gonna say, by the time I buy a new computer, if it's a netbook, I predict it will have insane technology that I haven't even thought of and linux will be incredibly advanced but I hope it has a touchscreen, GPS, high capacity, low powered, high speed SSD, insane battery life, a high res webcam, bluetooth, wifi, tons of RAM, and an incredibly fast, low powered, low cost processor. And I will probably buy my next computer in about three years. Anyways, this price drop is a good sign and I can't wait to see what new netbooks come out.
sbike @ Sep 9th 2008 8:01PM
I'm trying to hold out for the intel x4500 based chipsets. 3x the 3d performance and lower power. The dell e4200, thinkpad x200, and hp elitebook 2530p all have it. All are around 3lbs, but more than twice as expensive.
Hopefully the next generation of atom based netbooks will have the x4500.
andyafk @ Sep 9th 2008 8:54PM
