iPod nanos set to double capacity, iPod touch likely unchanged in preparation for price cuts? (updated)
MacRumors has some last minute leaks en-route to Tuesday's Lets Rock event. Arn's sources claim that the entire iPod lineup will be refreshed and the heavily rumored iPod nanos will make the move from 4GB/8GB capacities and 6 color choices to 8GB/16GB configurations in 9 color variations -- purple, orange, and yellow will be the new choices. Interestingly, the iPod touch will continue to be offered in 8GB/16GB/32GB choices which sets them up for the rumored price cuts we've been expecting ever since Apple kicked out the iPhone 3G for $199.By the way, the Apple store will almost certainly be going down in the next few minutes. Consider us and yourselves, notified.
Update: Now AppleInsider has chimed in with leaks from its "longstanding sources." They cite 5 colors of iPod shuffles and an updated black and

Yellow nano? That way madness lies!
If it turns out that it really is the iPhone Nano, I can't wait to hear all the jokes about banana phones!
I'm piggybacking myself, so it's OK. :)
"Updated black and white classic"? No silver (or colour screen)?
Ba-Nano?
so when will it be available in stores? (not apple stores)
No feature updates to the iPod Touch? Awww man.
I was pretty much definitely going to get one after this show anyway, so a price drop would be welcome, but I was hoping for at least an updated... well, anything.
Surprise us, Apple!
I have a feeling that we're going to be disappointed. I remember waiting and refreshing my browser at this time last year in eager anticipation of what Apple was going to release. I was let down. It's like getting nothing from the tooth fairy. Or maybe it's just life telling me that I'm growing old and that there's more to it than a stupid mp3 player. :P
dude it's from Macrumors ... R-U-M-O-R ....S
@Ryan:
Not sure how last year was a "let down", because Apple basically refreshed their entire line-up back then. New Touches, new Nanos, new iPod flagship model. Maybe *this* year it will be a snoozer, yeah.
Oh, I see what you did there. I suppose I know how that feels then. ;)
I'm hoping for a 32GB iPhone update... I'll buy one finally if I can get 32GB of storage!
if at least the new itunes works better (mostly faster) on Vista I will be satisfied
It's one of the plan to encourage us to migrate to OSX
I hate these events because every time Apple will have a brand spanking new awesome update for my ipod Touch (that I bought the day it came out) that costs me $10!
Why must I pay for every new update?!
*cough*lucky iphone users *cough*
Switch to a less unscrupulous brand then... Zune or Creative or Cowon or Archos?
I believe most other manufacturers provide new features to existing customers for free? Correct me if I'm wrong......!
You don't have to pay for them.
And I don't mean you don't have to download them, I mean you don't have to pay for them.
Software update?ITunes 8? Wifi sync? Please.

I hate paying for ipod Touch updates almost as much as Engadget's comment submission process!
You actually update? I don't. I'm still stuck on 1.1.4 without the Jan update.
Oh, and also: Nobody is forcing you to do so
Everybody else gives free updates...
Only Apple would manage to charge you for updates. Only because people are stupid enough to pay for them.
Everything is fine, let uncle Steve give you an"update" for $10-$20... :-0
Your guide to recycling, by Steve Jobs.
Fashion accessories! Have they improved sound quality and Battery life or is this essentially a bevelled Nano with a paint job?
More colors, bigger storage, new shell. Where is the much touted Apple innovation?
I think we are all looking at the wrong model for a big update.
The iPod touch will be a true 2Gen version next September, following a true 2Gen iPhone earlier in 2009, would recon higher def screen (204ppi like the nano) possibly bigger screen, 4inch diagonal screen possibly, smaller home button (they gota make that thing light up at some point), same size device overall.
The nano as you can see in the photo, 204ppi screen but bigger than the last generation nano, apples screen manufacturer testing the stability of increased screen size ready for iPhone and touch next year.
Now, we have the classic, what happened to that old boy. If any ipod ever needed a proper seeing to the classic dose. Smaller click wheel with possibly some kind of back lighting effect (as patented by apple last year). Bigger 204ppi screen, same size casing, massive memory but on single plater HD so device thinner overall, improved UI leaning toward 'touch' operation without touch screen. I think I might actually by one even though I love my touch.
Saying all that, probably going to be a disappointment with cheep case redesigns and volume button on the touch. When designers start adding curves you know they can’t think of anything better.
The iPod Classic is a simply a stop-gap model. Apple do this often when there are deficiencies in their product line that they cannot fix.
It only exists because Apple haven't been able to match the capacity of the Touch. That's why they are doing little to change it. The Classic is a dead model based on a 6 year old design and it should have been killed years ago.
Also, apple will come out with unicorns. They will be free.
"By the way, the Apple store will almost certainly be going down in the next few minutes. Consider us and yourselves, notified."
Next few minutes? I thought the event didn't happen in the US for at east another 8 hours?
apple store isn't down yet!
I assume they mean in prep for the new items being added to the store.
"I assume they mean in prep for the new items being added to the store."
No - they always do that during the Keynote speech whilst the new products are being spokent about and then bring it back up after it's been announced.
Either way, I can't see this being just about new iPods or an iPod Nano. The stock's gonna dip drastically if that's all they've got to announce.
Its down
I love life, and apple
Depending of if the new Touch has any new features, I may upgrade mine.
The ONLY way in HELL I WOULD UPGRADE TO THE supposed 2gen itouch is of they were to ADD a camera And/or FM Tuner, thats it, i would settle for just the camera, but thats as low as i would go, What would u want?
If they provided a high capacity iPod Touch I would consider moving away from my beloved iPod Classic.
Back in the day I thought my 60 GB iPod was large, then I outgrew it. THEN they came out with the 120 GB and my mouth dropped. I knew I had to get it. I've got it, and it's full. Just now I had to remove stuff to sync. I wouldn't mind another drastic jump in size though.
With that said, I have played with the iPod Touch and if they gave it 100 GB or more, I would lovingly fork over the money required to upgrade/downgrade to it.
I don't anticipate anything too exciting. It's going to be a good long time before Apple has anything like iPhone debut excitement.
Or even Air debut type excitement.
That's funny. I didn't know anyone got excited about the Air. Have they sold any of those yet?
Can't wait!
Yes you can. Just watch, you'll do it.
I would like to see Stereo BlueTooth support, Camera, GPS, FM or Satellite radio support, native ability to theme, and anything else that increases the value really. But my main wants are camera and GPS.
What is the point of GPS on the iPod Touch? It would be worthless the second you moved out of range of a WiFi access point.
Just like standalone GPS units do... With satellites...
Think man...
Another Photo of new iPod Nano =)

Yikes, that UI will be tiny!
I know its not real (at least I hope not)
happy_penguine,
What do you think the "next big aple" thing will be?
My opinion is the best we're going to see for quite a while is new notebooks. As the press and sites such as Engadget keep telling us, Apple is way overdue for a notebook refresh. Other than that, I'd like to see a true Apple UMPC but I wouldn't count on that. In summary, anyone's guess is as good or better than mine.
You're right, I'm inclined to agree. Barack has got a good shot at the Presidency.
And I must applaud your wonderful idea for a cheer, a portmaneu of 'Go' and 'Obama'
GOBAMA!
Hopefully they change the UI a bit...its pretty much been the same for the last 7 years. Just prettier with more options....
Personally, I'd love to see the iPod touch turn into a full-fledged Phoneless Handheld, rather than an awkward cross between the iPhone and a music player.
It wouldn't be hard, just a few changes. These (in my opionion) would have to be:
- A file browsing system
- Probably the implementation of mass storage
- better contact system
- Possibly a memory card slot
I think it would fully justify the existance of the iPod Touch, because otherwise it's just another gimmicky MP3 player, which isn't a good fate, because despite it's drawbacks, it still is a decent bit of tech.
If the shots turn out to be real, I promise never to doubt Engadget again.
NOBAMA
Read this guys previous posts (he was formerly YAY )
I theorise that he's an Apple hater trying to stir up the masses against Apple. Just look at his previous posts and the responses they got.
Based on that, is also an Obama hater ?
The best thing to do when you see this guy post is to click "-" and just move on.
"Apple kicked out the iPhone 3G for $199."
The iPhone 3G was NEVER $199. There is a BIG difference between an upfront cost and an outright cost. To say the iphone was $199 is complete bull crap, I'm not quite sure what the outright cost of the iphone is in the US but here(Australia) its around $800-$900 which is VERY different to $199.
Well I'm alittle excited. Been wanting to replace my 5.5gen iPod for a while now. Can't wait to see what Apple cooks up this year. Hopefully I'll get some cell phone signal at school today mid way through the event so I can get some of the updates. :)
Stop spreading last minute rumors - for those who can't wait, go out - and do something else.
Let just wait and see the real thing.
iDildo's in anything other than pink is wacky
I'd like to see both the Touch and the Nano actually get a small speaker like the iPhone 3G.
GOAWAY
Purple? Motherfucking Purple?
I will jump on that shit faster than a divorced housewife on a pool boy.
How about this idea .... Apple discontinues the 8 GB Touch, leaves the 16 & 32 GB alone and adds a new slightly thicker 120 GB (HDD) Touch. Then the need for the iPod classic is gone and it would be discontinued. This is strategic for Apple cause it certainly would help to sell more apps & video, no?
The iPod touch with a large HDD will not replace the iPod Classic because the Classic has physical controls. The touch is terrible as a music player for not having any physical controls.
I'm stoked for a 16GB Nano.
I can already confirm that the 16GB ipod touch has dropped in price in Canada to $278.99 instead of $399.99. That makes it a much more appealing purchase for me.
What about the 32gb pricing? $378 i suppose?
This Apple iPod Nano is very beautiful. I love it.

ZUNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNE
"We are busy updating the store for you and will be back shortly."
This is what I get when I try to access the SG Apple store for the iTouch.....Looks like we will be getting something(hopefully price cut)
THE STORES DOWN! THE STORES DOWN!
My Zune 30 has (apparently) just bought the farm, so I'll be curious to see what becomes of the iPod Touch.
Apple store down!!!!
why not something in the pool of working with Rockband a little bit more as well?
I'll take one in every color!

It's funny because you spelled your own name wrong.
GOKILLYOURSELF
Seriously, why do you need to post political shit on a tech blog.
Come on, Apple wore out its "crazy colors, oooh" angle way back in the flavors of iMac days. They got good stuff up their sleeves other than that and price drops.
McCain't gonna be president.
There, you can do it with both candidates.
I read "black and white ipod classic" and thought they meant "black and white ipod classic"
Apparently they were talking about the faceplate colors, and the words "silver" and "white" are interchangeable.
If all they're coming out with is a throw-back Nano and the same ipod Touch at lower price points, then I'll promptly sell all my AAPL stock cuz that would mean that something's seriously wrong in the land of Cupertino.
In other words- there's more going on guys. Innovation just doesn't stop cold even for a line of MP3 players that is certainly well into the maturity stage of its life-cycle.
Mgmt already issued a word of caution that margins would be down a bit due to big increases in technology for new products / functionality coupled with an aggressive pricing strategy. This report doesn't mesh with that at all. Besides, can you really picture Steve up there front and center only to announce a bigger Nano and lower prices on iPod Touch? No way :)
I like that you mention the store going down here instead of making a rather pointless entire post for it like in the past. Keep it up.
Why is there so much interest in a damn fruit company? (if you don't get it, watch Forrest Gump)
And I actually hope they do a meaningful update or price drop for the Classic, since I would want a large PMP this Christmas
Still hanging on to my 4th gen iPod till the touch gets more than 40gb in storage. Looks like I'm still waiting. Maybe I should just get a Classic?
I love apple but the annual iPod fluff is more than meh. New colors for the shuffle? Do people actually still buy the shuffle?
As for the nano. I'm on the fence about the form factor but where are some cool new features like the Zune? And the fact that iPods don't have built in radios because it competes with iTunes (radio is free, buying music is not) is glaringly obvious. The user suffers because Jobs doesn't want t sell less music. Weak.
The blue Zune is sounding appealing. The only question is can I be an Apple fanboy still AND have a Zune.
/Perplexed. :)
been intently scanning the apple scene for just about a year now... yet to go out n get my first apple product and by no means a M$ fanboy just yet... frankly a size bump to 64GB on the touch and i'd be sold... i guess thats pretty questionable with the current prices and we cant really expect that till christmas or early next year..
Apple store is down.
I'm not a huge Apple fan, but I'm extremely glad they're ditching the freaking iPod Midget.. er, Nano design of the previous generation... that thing looked crap compared to the 2G nano... and this new design, assuming it actually looks the way it's been leaked to, looks really sweet and I may actually spend some money on getting one.
Colors and Price cut? That's it?
I don't read engadget for your view of politics, post that shit somewhere else and keep on topic or shut the fuck up.
Apple Store is DOWN
Kevin Rose was right..
bleh
THE STORE issssssss DOWN!!
They are comming...
When will the new ipods be released to sell at other stores? There is no apple store near me and I would rather buy it at an actual B&M store. Thanks.
