iPod touch 2.1 firmware update now available
Stoked about all those new features you heard about during today's Stevenote? Dying to get your paws on the improved battery life, smoother UI, and other bug-destroying goodies? Well if you're a current touch owner, you can download the update right now (for a tidy $9.95, of course). Just follow the read link's "buy now" button to iTunes, and keep a credit card handy.
Update: If you already have firmware 2.0, this upgrade is free.

Last I checked, Touch owners had to pay for the last 3 updates. One update for 20$ and another two for 10$ each.
This is what I love about fanboys. Don't get me wrong, I love my Macbook and my iPhone, but when MS has frequent updates it's all about how they suck and have to keep patching their systems. When Apple does it it's great because it's Apple being proactive and making sure they keep their users up to date.
You gotta at least try to be a little less transparent than that, you know?
Why do all Apple fanboys hate on the FM radio like it's something noone will ever use? I wish my iPod Touch had one so I could listen to the talk shows in the morning while riding the bus :[
That's just how fanboys are. If their product doesn't have something, then obviously it's not necessary.
But wait until their product DOES get that feature added and they'll claim it's the greatest thing in the world, and probably say something along the lines of "Now we have that feature too so your product sucks even more!"
Why the hell is Apple charging for UPDATES? That's like making the horse-armor DLC in Oblivion mandatory.
Useless.
HAHA, funny analogy. Being realistic here, the economy is in a depression people are getting laid off left and right. Who knows what's going to happen, but I rather not blow money on this upgrade on any digital content that by (certain avenues) can be obtained with out cost. I've just installed the latest firmware, only difference between me and some of you people is I've got 10 dollars still in my pocket.
Wish it had the "shuffle-shake" feature of the iPod Nano.
Does this come with the new iPod Touch 2Gs? or 2.0? Thinking hard about buying one as much as I hate Apple... the Touch is one thing I can't hate on.
The 2g Touch will come with the newest firmware.
Guys,
I like Apple products and I have a powerbook and an iphone. But like any products Apple products have too many flaws and lack of features. Nothing can be omnipotent. The question is do you get the value for money? Do I get angry having to pay for a software upgrade? Sure I do.
Fanboys like iErik make me sick, braindead people like him makes me wonder- is Apple product really that brilliant? because they manage to dazzle stupid people like iErik who I bet never seen potential of other products...
Ta ta
Very well said!
Some of the fan boys for the various companies amaze me with their stupid comments. What ever happened being interested in a product because of its features/value?
Every company just wants in your wallet, why do people bend over and follow blindly.
Has anyone noticed they screwed up cahnging all the references to "iPodTouch" and "iPhone" in the ad and pages?
Things like "iPhone software 2.1 for iPod Touch"...
I could be wrong, but I believe the actual OS is labeled as OS X iPhone. Easy to understand how that could be confusing though.
If they offered two 2.1 versions i could live with it.
one with extra features fro 9.95
and one just with fixes for free!!!!
Apple bug fixes should be free, always!
If you have 2.0, 2.1 is free. If you don't have 2.0, the bug fixes aren't for you. The bug fixes are directed at bugs from the 2.0 update. You would probably get better battery life and improved overall performance from the "non-feature" side of things, but it's not intended to fix anything from a 1.x iPod.
my friend has this and I played with it....I think it's well worth the $9.95 for what it does...well, at least for him, haha.
It's early, but so far the update is looking good (the same can not be said for the 2.0.x versions which had my iPod Touch crash and burn 6 times - yep, 6 restore hell's). Some of the things I've tried that in the past caused problems, such as trying to install an app when the internet connection wasn't working now behave properly. If it can't contact the iTunes server (for example, if you have a wifi connection, but the internet connection on it goes down while trying to install), after a while it gives a dialog saying so, offering to try again or cancel and if you hit cancel the icon for the app disappears instead of staying around showing "loading" forever. Not to mention that it didn't crash and burn. Also, when there is an internet connection, app installs via the AppStore (on the iPod Touch) are *much* faster. Now genuinely quick. Also, and perhaps even more importantly, backups when syncing are massively faster, making syncing no longer a monumentally painful experience.
On the other hand, application updates are still essentially broken. By that I mean that I know there are about 8 apps I have installed that have updates (and it says so in iTunes on my Mac), but when I go to the AppStore on my iPod touch it says that all my apps are up to date. To make matters worse, currently I can't get any of the updates in iTunes either as when I click "Check for Updates" it gives an error. I'll presume that is a server overload issue or some such thing, but that still doesn't explain why there are no updates showing in the on-iPod touch AppStore at all.
Engadget has not way to ignore users, but if you use Firefox, I have written a extension to egnore users.

Archos also charges for updates. Not saying I agree with, not one bit, but just pointing it out for those who claim no other company does it.
Enjoying the new UI features.

Anyone know if the firmware update allows you to use the nike+ functionality or will this only work on the 2nd gen ipod touches?
Hmm.. boring?
Paying for an update is rediculus...
I love reading all these mac lovers praising apple for making them pay for updates...
Its like buying an 8 cyl car but only allowed to use 4 until you for up another 2 grand...
NOT A FAN. Glad I got my iTouch for free.
I have ipod touch gen2 with version 2.2(5g77a) and did not pay a cent.. whats with the price on this site.. is it a scam?
