Tesco leaks 12-inch Dell E Slim specs running "Ubunto" -- October 6th launch?
Hard to say what's going on exactly what this clusterfrack of a listing over at Tesco. While the Dell laptop shown is the £299 Inspiron Mini 9, it's labeled with an Inspiron Z530 title bellowing a 12-inch display. Moving down to the specs, we've got a spec-for-spec match to the unreleased 12.1-inch E Slim exclusive we brought you back in June: same 1.6GHz Atom processor; heavier 1.2kg (2.6-pounds) weight; bigger 12-inch WXGA (1,366 x 768 pixel) display; wider 29.9-cm (11.8-inch) dimension; and 40GB hard drive spinning Ubunto Ubuntu Linux. So Tesco, October 6th you say? Full Tesco specs listed after the break because that read link won't be up for long.
P.S. Dell doesn't sell a Atom-based 12-inch laptop under any model number presently, nor does it have a Z530 in its product roster.
[Thanks, GeorgeJ, Craig and Yau]

thats the same price like the 9 incher. highly unlikely i would say...
Mark @ Sep 12th 2008 8:54AM
So it has a 4.200 rpm hard drive and a 1.33 Ghz processor?
Josh @ Sep 12th 2008 10:55AM

Nahh, their different priced.
Koolshen @ Sep 12th 2008 7:32AM
I think with "Z530" they mean the CPU.
That is an Intel Atom.

How the heck did you figure that one out?!
Serial 8-Ball Mouse @ Sep 12th 2008 9:08AM
Through a wizard's spell known as "Google."
1234321 @ Sep 12th 2008 9:51AM
well thank goodness for that, otherwise I thought Dell was going to adopt the bad naming conventions of Toshiba, Acer etc.
It'll probably be called the Insipron Mini 12
Dubb @ Sep 12th 2008 10:23AM
Oh I dunno, it only says "Processor Model Number Z530" in the above screenshot which didn't require any wizard's spells.
Josh @ Sep 12th 2008 11:07AM
Correct.
Check the specs:

Ernestized @ Sep 12th 2008 7:39AM
The processor speed should be 1.6Ghz for Atom, but it shows 1.33Ghz. Looks wrong.
AVG @ Sep 12th 2008 8:14AM
The specs are right, it's the silverthorne atom processor (of which there is a 1.3 and a 1.6 Ghz version)... Considering the hard drive is not a SDD and that there is no windows tax, the pricing need not be out of proportion. Besides, this is equivalent to ~550 dollars, perfect to compete with the 10" screens of the recently discounted eee 1000's.
At least, I hope the price is right...
kccboy2004 @ Sep 12th 2008 7:46AM
Hey !!!!! Wait one minute....
This is the Dell Inspiron 1210. This has been out for ages. This is certainly available in Japan and has been for at least 6 months. I know, I have been working on one.
Josh @ Sep 12th 2008 11:08AM
How about a picture then?
Bellzebub @ Sep 12th 2008 7:52AM
Wow, not only do they ship it with a misspelled operating system, they also failed to notice that "Wherever" is one word and not two. Go Tesco - glad to see you proof read your web content before publishing it for the masses.
Bellzebub @ Sep 12th 2008 8:04AM
Hmmm, it also states that the "Product requires an adult to sign upon delivery". I wonder if the adult's gesturing is to open the box, or if Tesco actually meant that the product is sent via recorded delivery and that they require an adult to confirm receipt? Perhaps "Product requires an adult to sign a confirmation of delivery" or if you wish to keep it snappy, how about "Sent via recorded post". Guess it's all semantics.
John Stracke @ Sep 15th 2008 12:02PM
Maybe "where ever" is acceptable usage in the UK? I'm pretty sure I've seen both in respectable contexts.
merodac @ Sep 12th 2008 7:54AM
Product Height 29.9 cm ?
Nice box... ;)
Christopher @ Sep 12th 2008 8:27AM
Obviously nobody has picked up on the fact the pic is of the Inspiron 9 Mini!
Rick @ Sep 12th 2008 9:08AM
Huh? I guess English wasn't your first language. It says in the first sentence:
"While the Dell laptop shown is the £299 Inspiron Mini 9"
John @ Sep 12th 2008 8:51AM
Display resolution is wrong. It should be 1280x800. There is not a 12" display on the market with a 1366x768 resolution.

Sony are using this rez on their 11.1" TX/TZ laptops
AVG @ Sep 12th 2008 5:50PM
Bah, my toshiba tablet has a res of 1450*1050 on 12"... It's not that surprising, really.
I'd be more surprised if it stated an 18 cell battery :-p
modifiedbears @ Sep 12th 2008 8:56AM
You can buy an Acer Aspire One with a 160gb hdd and XP for $400. I don't know why Dell is putting such a small hdd in this. 2gb of RAM would make it a lot more appealing too. Ubuntu is a decent OS, but I would prefer to have XP. This is shaping up to be another disappointment from Dell.
tinker23 @ Sep 12th 2008 10:23AM
Probably because there is only space for an 1.8" drive just like in Dell's 12" Latitude 4x0 series laptops...
modifiedbears @ Sep 12th 2008 3:30PM
I know if Acer can get a 2.5" 160gb hdd into the Aspire One, then Dell shouldn't have a problem with a 12".
AVG @ Sep 12th 2008 5:55PM
Yeah, they must have it with XP, otherwise I'll miss all the BSOD's... the viruses... the spyware... the system instability... and the fact it's so damn easy to hack (http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/29/linux-becomes-only-os-to-escape-pwn-2-own-unscathed/)
Yeah... Ubuntu is the choice for people who want to lead a boring, uneventful life.
No, that's not a note of sarcasm in my voice, not a chance!
Callum @ Sep 12th 2008 9:01AM
Noted on the tesco website, also something like the mini 9 but with Ubuntu & 8GB ssd for £249 (from Oct 6).
See http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.204-8967.aspx
Prestwick @ Sep 12th 2008 9:12AM
Don't worry Engadget, Tesco rarely take any notice of suppliers or manufacturers and are usually quite happy to spend years in court just so they can keep selling their wares without their permission for just that little bit longer (i.e. the Levi Jeans case a few years back).
GeorgeJ @ Sep 12th 2008 9:15AM
Geesh Thomas Ricker... I had posted this in the comments a day ago in the Mini 9 story you guys posted yesterday...
Ian @ Sep 12th 2008 9:29AM
I thought Intel was limiting the resolution of the Atom CPU in units to 600 lines whereas this was says 768?
Brian @ Sep 12th 2008 10:59AM
Could be this thing has a Poulsbo chipset, which supports that resolution: http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/intel/showdoc.aspx?i=3276&p=17 It's a smaller and lower-powered chipset than most netbooks, so it makes sense for a super-thin long-battery life model.
C3r4 @ Sep 12th 2008 10:11AM
I used to work for the Tesco Customer Service Centre... its quite possible that no-one will actualy be able to order this anyway... anything good is never in stock...
and in regards to proof reading thier content? Monkeys do it...
explaining the cock ups of the merchandising dept to customers was not an easy job i can assure you....
Josh @ Sep 12th 2008 11:10AM
It looks messed up anyways..
http://direct.tesco.com/compare/?c=204-8967+204-8424&f=/q/N.1999033$4294951493.aspx
Half of the specs are missing.
anon @ Sep 12th 2008 11:28AM
Awesome, just 299 clubcard points. I wonder how many Stanley nickels that is.
mikepegg @ Sep 13th 2008 11:43AM
Odd.. They have corrected the OS of the Dell Inspiron Z530 to Ubuntu from Ubunto. The Dell Inspiron N270 still seems to be Ubunto though.
dellbox @ Sep 20th 2008 11:17PM
interesting!
dragons_rage @ Sep 27th 2008 10:07AM
It's interesting if this was bogus information and Dell was not planning to release this at that time I would think Tesco would have already been pushed to remove this ad but as of today Tesco still has it up claiming it will be released week of Oct. 6.
