Advent 4123 netbook boasts built-in SIM card slot, can't escape UK

PC World (the store) already netted itself an MSI Wind rebadge for its Advent brand, and it's now plundered the netbook depths yet again for another model, with its new Advent 4123 adding a built-in SIM card slot to the mix. While it's getting increasingly tough to distinguish the rebadges from the rip-offs, this one appears to be based on ECS' G10IL netbook, with it boasting all the same design cues (minus the LED-adorned trackpad button) and identical specs, including a 10.2-inch display, a 1.6GHz Atom processor, 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, and Window XP as standard. You'll also apparently be able to get this one in both black and silver versions, but only in the UK, it seems, where it'll set you back a hefty £349 (or just over $600 if you're thinking about trying to import one).

So, we can just hope to have the ECS G10IL rebranded for sale here in the U.S and other regions no?

What's with the OSX 10.4 wallpaper? I was hoping it was a Psystar net book running OSX or something...

Funny, it also looks macbook-inspired in the design. not that that's a bad thing.

It's not inspired by the MacBook Pro, because the front edge isn't sharp as a razor blade. This Mac is torture to use without an external keyboard and trackball.

XP standard eh? then what's with the OS X Tiger wallpaper?
Chris @ Sep 16th 2008 3:34AM
The Wind (and all it's variants) are probably the easiest to put OS X on. There's even a pre-made DVD ready to install on 'that' site. (you know, the one with the boat)
Jensh @ Sep 15th 2008 6:32PM
Ye whats with the OS X Tiger 10.4 wallpaper?

Its called fore-shadowing.
Because by the time today is finished, this will be yet another netbook running osx.
Ollie @ Sep 15th 2008 7:07PM
But will it run Crysis?

So, I don't know if anyone asked this yet, but why is there an OS X desktop wallpaper?
HunterXI @ Sep 15th 2008 9:19PM
About 5 other people.

Hell, that's perfect. Netbook + EVDO/SIM capability integrated is the future for these devices. What's the point of a netbook if you are a slave to wifi?
If we could convince our employees that they don't need a full-fledged laptop to run internet, watch DVDs, and MS Office, we could cut costs by about 50% (we currently purchase HP 6510B and 2510Ps, along with VAIO TZ and Lenovo x300/301 for the execs) or more. Heck, we could get them all set up with idrive or mozy accounts, skip buying the ridiculous 3 year warranties- Just toss it when it breaks.
Bilko @ Sep 16th 2008 8:50AM
Built in sim card, who cares, i just bought a lenovo thinkpad t400 and it has a sim card slot built into it in the battery bay
Dodap @ Sep 16th 2008 3:16AM
Indeed, the netbooks should be true to their name: I do not want to add a protruding USB stick, to add an UMTS modem. This should be built in or at least upgradeable. And for instant Internet access I also do not need a big hard drive, only a decent sized and readable screen.
spants @ Sep 16th 2008 4:04AM
I have one. Actually it does have the LEDS in the trackpad buttons - the picture shown is of a machine that is switched off with a photoshopped display.
Be aware that this is not an MSI Wind and will NOT boot from the hacked msi wind osx dvd. It hangs at the "Mac Framework" "Buffers allocated" message (apparently). A fix would be nice....

Nice to see that now that Apple apparently doesn't want them, the 160Gb 1.8" drives are turning up in netbooks.
Anup @ Sep 16th 2008 7:17AM
Are you sure this is advent 4123 and not the 4213 (which is on sale already for £349 and claims to have "Built in mobile broadband")????
