Navigon's 2000S satnav: helps get you home, doesn't break the bank

GPS,

Why not have a real keyboard layout instead?
More like why not have different keyboard layouts. This alphabetic layout is very annoying and doesn't make much sense as we all are used to our lovely computer layouts.
You right. Dvorak would be nice.
I dunno, I've achieved anywhere between 100-150 WPM with the standard QWERTY keyboard. Just because it doesn't make any sense doesn't mean it isn't useful to those who can learn it without having to peer down at the keys and chicken peck.
Ignatius. If the same person had the exact same skill level with both Dvorak and QWERTY they'd be faster on Dvorak. It's simply more efficient.
Not only is the layout lame, but with the "intelligent" features, you won't be planning a trip to Sri Lanka any time soon . . .
ranova - umm... do you see that it is set to CA in the USA? Also, Sri Lanka is a country and not "City or Code"....
There are plenty of Garmins and Magellans around and under this price point as well. But competition is always good.
If they want somebody to buy it, they shouldn't show their terrible alphabetic-order keyboard in press shots.
Discovered by the Germans in 1904, they named it San Diego, which of course in German means a "whale's vagina."
SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET

Wtf are you!?
Low-ranked for double-posting. I don't care if you didn't post this before; it's still a double-post.
I don't believe it! I posted the exact same thing, while I was searching for the quote you posted it faster than me, I didn't see it as the page didn't refresh and I double posted the same quote :)
Even though you posted the same quote as me, I ranked you up for having the genius to match said quote to the picture. High-fives all around.
Navigonseems like a responsive company that is tryng to make a good product.
I've seen my share of hitches with them however, and will steer clear,
Most PDA/Phone have brower capabilities, why not just browse to maps.live.com or maps.google.com and get directions? These kind of specific purpose devices are going the way of the dinosaurs. What and where is the innovation here?
I have a GPS and I have a Blackberry with "GPS". The Blackberry uses a mini-GPS form that is less accurate than the satellite based navigation. Even though its convenient, my phone is just inaccurate enough to make me miss about half of my turns. My Garmin GPS doesn't miss a beat. Maybe someday, but not yet.
Not if you're stranded in another country with no cell phone! These things are great! Saved my ass many times as I'm directionally challenged.
Good article, but when I read the comments. I'm sure, most of your readers know nothing about GPS. Go and find out ! For this is an awesome GPS.
Yes but does it play hangman ?
Ok if you are looking for a great GPS that doesn't cost $799 go for a Navigon. I have had one for a year. They are still working on perfecting the U.S. models, and have only been in the game for around 2 years. They are a top GPS company in Europe and have been since the beginning. So if you want all the features that a Garmin has, but at a 1/4 the price, give them a try. Oh the higher end models they have free traffic, and updates for life.
This looks like a hackers dream, open source anyone?
I hate navigation units that don't use a QWERTY keyboard layout. Our Garmin unit is the same way. Why not use a keyboard layout that everyone is familiar with already?
Remember, these are relatively small screens. The ABCDEF layout only uses 8 buttons in each row. The QWERTY layout needs 10 buttons on the top row, which would require making the buttons smaller. Most users will be pressing buttons with their finger. With a small screen like this, you really don't want to go much smaller with the buttons. Otherwise, you'd need a stylus to press the buttons.
I own a navigon 5100. While the software that comes with it is decent, its much better to unlock it using miopocket and load up garmin software\maps or igo8 software\maps
From that picture it looks like they are attempting to fix the worst part of the Navigon software - entering an address. It is a truly horrible experience. Bad enough that we returned our Navigon 5100 a week after buying it. Maybe they will roll out the redesign to the existing models through a software update?
