Windows 7 coming June 3rd, 2009?

As you may recall, Bill Gates himself mentioned a little ways back that Windows 7 could possibly be arriving as soon as next year, which prompted some quick backtracking on Microsoft's part, but that earlier-than-expected date has now cropped up yet again, this time supposedly in Microsoft's internal calendar. According to InternetNews.com, that calendar pegs the planned release date as June 3rd, 2009, which is a good deal sooner than the "early 2010" date we've been hearing all along, and quite a significant cut into Vista's planned three-year lifespan. What's more, the site also says that Microsoft will take advantage of its Professional Developer's Conference on October 27th to launch the first public beta of Windows 7, although that doesn't quite match up with earlier word that it'd only be revealing some "in-depth technical information" about the OS.

who is this zhou?!1!
But, but, but.....Vista.
But, but, but.....Mojave.
But, but, but....Seinfeld.
Shareholders ought to bail, and fast. Redmond just doesn't seem to have direction.
Zhou is the same guy who showed us Vista, remember?
my Mech E advisors name is zhou... his teeth are so messed up
Mojave is to show that Vista isn't as bad as what people are hearing. If people can accept that, Seinfeld is to show that Windows is still a cool OS and that Gates is hip. If those things work out, people will be excited when Windows 7 comes out.
Windows 7 is just going to be vista recycled with a new look and hopefully the proper features vista should have had in the first place. Microsoft is not going to start from the beginning when they haven't fully reaped the profits they expected form vista sales.
i really hope they decide to drop the 32-bit versions and make this 64-bit only.
I'd be willing to bet that the next version of Windows won't come in a 32-bit version.
Microsoft has already said that the next Windows OS (after Vista) will, I believe, be both 32-bit and 64-bit BUT the 64-bit will be more available than the 32-bit (basically swap the current situation). The the OS after that will be only 64-bit.
definitely need to start forcing developers to work in 64 bit. i thought about 64 bit for my new laptop, but after looking around found that very few programs are coded in 64 bit, and i didn't want to have to worry about compatibility.
You wouldn't have to worry about it if you used Ubuntu!
I may have been wrong above, but doesn't it not make much sense to have a 32bit version of the next Windows since all of the desktop processors released in the past few years are 64bit?
Those poor Microsoft developers, developers, developers!
Windows 7 "ULTIMATE"
ohhhh not this shit again!
what is wrong with them, drop the 10 different packages, give us a 64/32 bit Ultimate and sell NOTHING ELSE.
Making the OS and Drivers 64-bit is much harder than making software 64 bit. Where applications can be recompiled to 64 bit because the hardware difference is abstracted from it. the OS and the Drivers do the abstraction. An analogy is telling drivers to switch from a SUV to a full efficient vehicle vs telling a Department of Transportation to switch from a two lane rode from a 4 lane road. They cant just say lets do it because the OS and Driver are what abstracts the difficult parts of changing from 32 to 64 bit to applications.
Internetnews.com ....what a trustworthy name for a news site.
This is total BS. It's obviously a fake screenshot.
look the build numbers and copyright date. TOTALLY FAKE
You're an idiot.
It might actually be real. Zhou was the name on the early Windows 7 screenshots that, though everyone (including me) thought were fake, turned out to be real. Let's wait and see.
"...quick backtracking on Microsoft's part, but hat earlier-than-expected date..."
Who is this magically Hat I ask you?
Free Hat!
Now are they going to give discounted upgrades to vista owners or what?
we'll probably just end up with some $100 rebate off of the os if we have vista
i donno, but i think they should definitely give discounted upgrades to xp owners
Ekauq... I love you.
Oh No!!!
People would then say that MS is copying Apple! :-O
Like an upgrade edition? Yeah they will have that.
WTF? How did I get low ranked for that?
You guys are a bunch of noobs.
So, you say in 2009 we can expect a new, refreshed windows?
It took 5 years for Vista to be release so what makes anyone think 2 or 3 years later they have something that will re-vitalize microsoft's appeal to consumers?
I like Vista. However I don't see any foreseeable leaps and bounds in an operating systems like XP had.
My guess is they want to move away from the name 'vista' and all it's negative connotations. Even if the new OS is just a more refined version of vista essentially, it will give consumers a new name not related to vista's bad reputation thus giving microsoft a new shot at wooing consumers.
but who's to say that if the negatives about vista carry over to windows 7, people will still refer to both of them as Vista? hopefully though Microsoft learned their lesson with vista
most of the negative issues with vista seem to be gone already. I'm mainly a linux user, but i do have vista as a second boot on my laptop, and it seems perfectly fine these days. Of course, it came on the laptop, so I never had to worry about driver issues...but those are mostly in the past, are they not?
Vista will essentially become like Windows ME (Millenium Edition) and act like a bridge between XP and Seven as ME acted as a bridge between 98 and XP.
They threw a buch of stuff into Vista to see how we would react to it, and the stuff that we didn't like, is out in Seven, the stuff we liked... Well that stuff is in.
William, the ME/Vista situations are absolutely nothing alike from an architectural standpoint.
ME basically ended an entire design philosophy for Windows. 9x and DOS died with ME.
Vista, on the other hand, actually cements a lot of things about NT, and gutted a large number of old and questionable systems from it.
Seven shouldn't actually be a big architectural jump from Vista. Vista was a MASSIVE architectural jump from XP. XP was a completely different OS design from ME/9x/etc.
Vista is actually a lot more like Windows 2000: New driver models, designs, etc.
Keep diluting your brand Microsoft..
hmm a vista skin. i hope i can get rid of that... i want nothing that reminds me of vista when using a new OS... in fact, why isn't there a windows 7 theme or look?
skeptical...
GUI is one of the last things developed in an OS, at is the easiest to create. All of the R&D goes into the programming.
for something that is due out in 9 months, as was the case with windows 95, you got an indication of the environment through the builds. i'm sure your generalized statement is true in many cases, but part of testing the environment of your new operating system is using it with the GUI it comes with.
this late in the game i'm going to safely assume it uses the vista GUI.... which again I hope can be heavily customized or changed altogether.
I really like the Vista theme. I hope they keep it in, they have no need to change it. It's something everyone seems to like.
XP was late. Vista was late. Assuming this isn't a prank, is there any reason to think Microsoft will get Windows 7 out on time?
Knowing Microsoft, Windows 7 will probably be the long-awaited 'Mojave'.
(I actually like Vista, for the record, but I'm just kidding around with that).
Pretty much Vista with touch screen capabilities. You're better off with Vista with a more mature drivers.
So we should expect it by Mid-December of 2011 then?
Yes, and with some of their initially announced features stripped in order to get it out *that* soon.
*Remembers the promise of Longhorn*
I get that Microsoft has the problem of convincing people to use Vista because Vista has such a bad rap and therefore they're touting "Windows 7" a lot.
But seriously, this is a bad idea.
First, it cuts the legs out from under their recent Vista campaigns (Seinfeld, Mojave)
Second, it pisses off the people who did upgrade to Vista - it now says their investment is null and void.
Third, it makes supporting apps a nightmare - remember when boxes used to say "Supports Windows 95OSR/98/98SE/ME/XP"?
I have a prediction - they'll get everyone all stoked about Windows 7 and then announce that, as it turns out, they plan to make Windows 7's new stuff into a service pack for Vista. People who run Vista will be happy. People who have not bought Vista yet will probably do so. They get all the good PR and sales and no one gets hurt.
Interesting prediction!
Even a minimal upgrade cost .. say $50 .. would be reasonable if they have some handy updates.
I don't see Microsoft advertising or promoting Windows 7 , I don't think they need to, Vista is doing quite well.. From the stats, Vista's usage has gone up from 4.5% to 12.5% from Sept/07 to August/08, that's a pretty healthy adoption rate. Especially when there's so much negative bullshit floating around out there.. In the same give time, apple have seen a 1% gain and Linux have seen a .5% gain.. Microsoft aren't losing any market share, and apple's gains aren't nearly as astounding as many on this rag hope it to be..
in 03, XP's adoption rate grew by similar numbers.. 42.6 to 59.1 from November to Sept/04.
If you're right, that's going to be one hell of a service pack.
Hopefully this will be better accepted than Windows Vista and not have as many complaints.
People always complain when a new version of Windows is released. Remember when XP was released? It was the worst thing to happen to computers since lightning and spilled apple juice.
Perhaps this is why the new Gates/Seinfeld ads are so non-descriptive? Just building up personality re-branding/interest well before release. both sequences end with Seinfeld asking "what's coming"
That's a really interesting point, actually. The commercials say nothing about Vista. It's more of a Microsoft and Windows bump on a general scale.
Maybe an early launch will mean a discounted "upgrade from Vista" license? That'd be pretty cool, even if the savings was only 10% off the regular upgrade.
By the way, has anybody been able to figure out why the next windows is called "Windows 7"? The last numbered version of Windows that I'm aware of was NT 4, which was then superceded by 2000, XP, and Vista, which would make the next version number 8.
You forgot MS's bastard child "Windows ME."
WIN NT4 = 4.0
WIN 2000 = 5.0
WIN XP= 5.1
WIN Vista = 6.0
WIN 7 = 7.0
Why has "Windows 7" the version number 6.1?
Why has you not using proper English.
Everything has a product name and a product version.
SQL Server 7
SQL Server 2000= Version 8
SQL Server 2005= Version 9
Office 2003=Version 11
Office 2007=Version 12
Visual Studio 6
Visual Studio 2003=Version 7
Visual Studio 2005=Version 8
Visual Studio 2008=Version 9
I'm trying to remember what Server 2008 lists as its version number, I want to say its 6 or 6.1, I do remember is listed as SP1 as launch though being its based on the same core as Vista.
Well technicaly 2000 and XP are the same generation. In fact alot of software that claims to be incompatible with one you can do a registry trick to make it think you are running the other and it will be happy.
I thought it would have been called: Windows Vienna
This can't be real they are releasing Mojave remember!!!!!!
/s
3.1 was so gangsta... lets go back to that....
Yeah I miss being able to exit windows.
LATE. Looks like I will give Android a try after all.
OUPPS. That was Windows not windows mobile.
Sorry that WM7 video is still echoing in my mind

Cake.........Yummy!
Hilarious!!! Windows 7 Ultimate Failure. Releasing a new OS so soon only solidifies the failure of Vista. LOL
How is Vista a failure because they're releasing a new system? Vista wasn't recieved very well immediately, but that still doesn't make it a failure... Then again, I'm just wasting my time trying to explain this to a trained monkey.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J0UjU0rtavE
Yeah, but doesn't Apple release an upgrade once every 2 years? Are they utter failure too?
The mojave project. A project to make users look like idiots on national TV. MS pure genius at work. LOL
@Jubei: Actually, I agree.
Windows 7 is probably just "Microsoft Vista, The Phantom Menace"
-probably just an extension of marketing spin after the Punk'd-style campaign of Mojave.
Couldn't be completely fake, Windows 2000 to Windows XP had about as long of a life span. Then again it could just be Vista SE, Win98 wasn't out all that long before they put out the slightly refreshed Win98SE with a few added features and functions.
And in addition to Windows 98SE the Windows XP SP2 was basicly an OS upgrade. Could have been XP v2. Like the way Apple does with the never ending point versions of OS X
On another note. I just setup an x64 version of Vista on a new Asus P5Q Pro motherboard with an Intel E8400 cpu and G Skill ram. It just might be the fastest and most stable computer I've ever used.
Everything just works. Perfectly.
From the read link: "Windows 7 is not a whole new OS but an evolution of Vista, and will reuse the old kernel and device driver model."
What ever happened to the "new, leaner kernel"?
C'mon guys... we were willing to wait longer.
Anyway, regardless of what they call this (if it really happens) I hope an all new operating system is still in the works.
I agree JR. They need to start from the drawing board. Build a stable and secure OS from the ground up - give us the low level advancements and save the eye-candy for a kids game.
The 'redesigned kernel' is just another empty promise on Microsoft's part. WinFS was another on Microsofts part when announcing Longhorn/Vista. In my eyes it seems like Microsoft is trying to promise innovation, but not carrying through with these 'upcoming features'. I personally don't see a huge reason to upgrade to Vista from XP other than if I was going to play DX10 games (and yes, many businesses agree, including Intel).
The way I see it with Windows 7 is that Microsoft doesn't see Vista as successful as it should have been (the $300M marketing campaign can show this), so they're trying to take more shortcuts to get the 'next-best-thing' out of the door. I can see this from a shareholder's prospective as a good thing, but in reality they could just be pissing off more people.
ps.. this will probably mark me down, but it had to be said.

This commenting system sucks.
In Soviet Russia commenting system sucks you!
Oh wait.. no... that can't be right.
Vista in the beginning was rough, due to the inability for hardware manufacturer's to properly update their drivers. They had ample time to do it in, too. For example, there was one chart released some time ago stating that of all the crashes Vista has suffered, some 30% was attributed to NVidia's own driver set. Microsoft's generic drivers was some 20%. Now-a-days the dust has settled and NVidia somewhat cleaned up its driver issues and much more hardware is compatible with Vista.
I've used Vista since the beta stages, which wasn't pretty, but now things are rock solid with my build.
Same here. Only problem I still have with Vista64 Ultimate is its incompatibility with my Adobe CS3 - I dont know how I'm going to afford CS4
Seems like the way things are going at the moment that MS would be better off adding the enhanced security features of Vista with the lightweight simplicity of XP so that everyone can have a low overhead/high performance OS on their netbook.
please do not make this os a resource hog, please give it great driver support, please make it very configurable, please do not release 10 different versions of it.... if they do all of this, i might not hate you

could this posibly be Vista SP2 ??
Windows 7 is probably just a Vista SP1. The new name is designed to avoid the bad publicity associated with Vista.
If they reduce idle memory consumption by 50% and knock the 30% CPU utilization with nothing other than xplorer running, I might be interested.
Vista is a bad OS and other than DX 10 there is no reason why you would ever need to upgrade from XP to Vista. I can only imagine how my new laptop with a 9700GT, Centrino2, 4GB of RAM would run with XP. But I would need XP drivers that don't exist. SO I am stuck with Vista that cuts my workflow and steals RAM from applications that need it to run some phantom task. I'd also love to run a few 3rd party utilities I use in XP but because they aren't driver signed I get all kinds of prompts and errors.
Microsoft's OS run peaked with XP which is really a home version of Windows Server based on Windows NT. Until Microsoft brings out a new OS built on an all new kernel we are just going to get bloated garbage that takes 30% of a new PCs power just to idle.
30%??? Funny, I'm sitting here replying to your post and all 4 cores are at 0%. Maybe it ain't Vista where your problem is.
You, sir, are an idiot. The OS is designed to maximize performace when RAM isnt being used. When other stuff needs it, it instantly releases it.
FAKE! Note the copyright 2007 date......
I can't wait to sit down with Excel so I can quantify the differences between the 18 versions to see which is just the right fit for me:
Windows 7 Developing Country
Windows 7 Mobile (same as above, but with accelerometer support)
Windows 7 Minority (same as above, but without accelerometer support)
Windows 7 Majority +1 (it's cleaner, gets off the bus sooner)
Windows 7 Kids and Libraries (accesses only library catalogs and disneyradio.com)
Windows 7 Apple (just a BSOD)
Windows 7 OEM (comes with Geek Squad button and payment screen for those $99 recovery disks)
Windows 7 Tablet (exists, but doesn't really exist)
Windows 7 Home (for the proletariat)
Windows 7 Middle-Class Home (caste system built-in!)
Windows 7 Middle-Class Home w/ Plus! (WITH PLUS!)
Windows 7 Premium (does not include Plus!)
Windows 7 Gold (price is literally indexed to that of actual gold)
Windows 7 Bronze-Ultra (it doesn't make sense to me either)
Windows 7 Platinum (only enough copies to fill a basement)
Windows 7 Lord Jesus Christ (mourns for your usage sins, then forgives you when you accept the EULA)
Windows 7 Moon Rocks (it's totally staged)
Windows 7 (which is also available in the aforementioned variants)
Yet another OS rushed to production and shipped early for eager paying beta testers.
they're doing that thing again?!
the
Windows Vista Starter
Windows Vista Home Basic
Windows Vista Home Premium
Windows Vista Business
Windows Vista Enterprise
Windows Vista Ultimate
thing again!??!
You can't buy Enterprise or Starter, so they don't count.
Plus, Media Center and Tablet (XP editions) were removed. In the end, there's no more editions of Vista than there are of XP.
maybe they can sell just one version with a features setup installation wizard for $200
maybe they can let you upgrade your computer without crapping out (like a hardware upgrade or repair mode)
maybe they can stop spying on legitimate customers
maybe they can hold off the launch until they have proper third party driver support
knowing Microsoft they will attach a credit card reader in which you have to pay a quarter every time the UAC comes up, that way they can give Windows 7 out for FREE.
I have a ques:
If I get a htc diamond now, with win 6.1, will I be able to upgrade it to win 7.0 for free?
anyone know?
ugh, I'm a moron - I just read the title, and thought it was about winmo... ignore me!
Sorry Microsoft, you already lost me to Apple. I don't have Macs yet but I'm definitely heading there.
