Kaliho KU860 convertible UMPC is now ready to be re-badged

It looks like you can only buy 'em by the truckload at the moment but, given the current state of things, we're guessing Kaliho won't have too much trouble attracting some interest in its new KU860 convertible UMPC, which packs all the expected specs in a decent enough package. That includes a 7-inch WXGA touchscreen, a 1.2GHz VIA C7-M processor, 1GB of RAM, a max 60GB hard drive, a 1.3 megapixel webcam and, perhaps most notably, built-in GPS. Unfortunately, there's no indication whatsoever of a price, but Kaliho is apparently more than happy to take your inquiry if you're looking to expand your burgeoning UMPC empire.

If I may:
No XP?
Only 60GB?
No SSD?
No PC card slot?
No built in WIMAX?
That bezel is too large!
Those are the ones I read in all of the posts that I can remember off the top of my head that seem to apply to this cool looking device.
Please feel free to post others below.

1GB with a C7M is much better to utilize on non-windows OSs. Its XP compatible, and not having XP on it initally would make it cheaper.
60GB is more than enough for your programs. Important documents shouldn't be kept on a laptop, but on syncronized and/or removable storage.
SSD-from-a-nobody-manufacturer doesn't exist yet...sorry.
PC Card slots are supposed to be dying off eventually, so you want one on a UPMC?
eh...it would be nice if it had wimax. You could probably find a mini pci-e card that would do wireless b/g/n and wimax i bet.
Huge bezel may be attractive to some if it works properly and the features on it are worth the tradeoff.

Let's see... adding to the list:
-"lol it sucks w/o OSX
-"the price is [(price) - (ridiculous price where manufacturer would be losing money)] too expensive!"
-"VIA processors suck"
anything else?
Chad @ Sep 16th 2008 3:42PM
I don't know about specific models but aren't the VIA processirs supposed to outperform the Atom in almost every application. So far this is the most appealing netbook I've seen....especially with the convertible tablet design, it would make a decent DVD player when I travel. Nothing worse than having some one smash your laptop with the back of their chair when they try to recline on an airplane.

Trolls suck too...

Looks impressive.

This wod be a good media center device to control everything from your seat.. Kinda like a huge super remote.
Jason Litka @ Sep 16th 2008 2:17PM
Looks interesting. Too bad I've already got an eeePC sitting at home, a Dell Inspiron 910 on the way, and a Latitude E4200 on order. My wallet can't handle too many more of these little gizmos...
Kind of surprised by the hard drive though. Would have figured on a small SSD.
Information Central @ Sep 16th 2008 2:21PM
WXGA? WTF is that? How about simply stating the resolution?
deepBLUE @ Sep 16th 2008 2:34PM
"READ->" LINK?!? WTF is that?? How about click on it and read the whole story before asking the silly questions??
puppydogpoo @ Sep 16th 2008 10:01PM
WXGA should be roughly 1280*768, but this here UMPC is spec'ed at 1024*600, which is actually WSVGA. Kids nowadays have no idea which acronyms stand for what...

What I want to know is where on earth Fujitsu is hiding the U820.
kai312 @ Sep 16th 2008 2:46PM
(PS. yeah, i wouldn't mind getting one, provided the battery life is ok)
Dave F @ Sep 16th 2008 3:09PM
Thanks... but the Fujitsu P1610 is all ready filling this need.
john @ Sep 16th 2008 6:02PM
Except the Fujitsu netbook types don't have vendor supported Linux. Which is sad, because their designs are rather nice. But, with Windows only, they're not worth buying.
Don @ Sep 16th 2008 3:44PM
When is a UMPC or netbook using the Isaiah vaporware from Via EVER going to show up in the market?
Uchiha Sasuke @ Sep 16th 2008 3:51PM
So if I buy a truckload of these, is it safe to say that I own a truckload of "Cali-hoes."
DssTrainer @ Sep 16th 2008 4:10PM
Ah! The first original and somewhat practical netbook! GPS is a real bonus since netbooks would make decent computers for the car. We just need expressgate in there and we got our first winner!
john @ Sep 16th 2008 6:06PM
It'd be nice to see this with either an internal PCI-Express Mini card slot (with antenna for 3G cards), and/or an ExpressCard slot. Both with Linux drivers for 3G cards.
I'd also like to know which version of Linux it is. Suse? Red Linux? Ubuntu?
And it'd be nice to see an SSD option (though, really, I'm sure we can all go out and buy one, and put it in the device itself).
Still, it's really nice to see a tablet/convertible netbook with vendor supported Linux out there.
IronSmith @ Sep 16th 2008 9:18PM
The site says you can do the ssd instead. These things are only meant for resale so there is some customization that you can do but the customization would be for the complete order of at least 1000 of these.
Windzilla @ Sep 16th 2008 8:08PM
you forget the #1 complaint
why would you pay x$ for this when you could get a full sized 5 pounder for y$
IronSmith @ Sep 16th 2008 9:14PM
This is exactly what I've been looking for for some time now. My only problem with it is that it is a Chinese company and I find it difficult to support Lenovo or any other company that is solely based in China, not because I don't like China but because I hate the Chinese government.

what's everyone's stickup on SSD. they're expensive, and of smaller capacity. 60gb is plenty to work with, SSD bootup increase is negligable in my opinion, and really the only advantage is not having your files corrupted cause your lappy gets bumped at the exact wrong time.
as far as the product goes, the webcam and touch screen make this an incredibly attractive product from my vantage point. would i like a bit more, yeah that's the whole point of tech, always wanting more in your comp, but to me, this is the best of both "netbook" and umpc worlds, something you can hold in one hand and mess around with small programs poke it, and also slips over for easier typing. all in all, better than what i've been seeing from other EEE pc clones, i hope this thing gets rebranded
