Apple prepping a 32GB iPhone update, bringing back at-home activation?
We're not particularly inclined to believe them, but the whispers that Apple is about to bump the top-end iPhone capacity to 32GB are getting harder to ignore -- especially since 8GB inventory is drying up, leading to speculation that's it's going to be dropped as soon as next week. We think the timing's a little odd on the heels of the Let's Rock iPod refresh, but considering the rampant speculation that Apple was forced to bump the nano to 16GB and drop the "limited edition" 4GB model entirely at the last minute in response to the new Zune lineup we suppose it makes competitive sense. AppleInsider also says customers will once again get the option to activate in-home, but we haven't heard anything about that -- we'll see what happens in the next few days.[Thanks, Harry]

hmm. im tempted. this will be interesting
If Apple brings back at-home activation, I just might buy an iPhone 3G. I hate dealing with cell phone salesmen and their stupidity!
Right on Brandon, I Completely Agree.
I cannot STAND sales people.
as a former sales person, let me assure you that the feeling is mutual.
16 GB is the only thing holding me back from buying an iPhone. As soon as they release a 32 GB version, I'm sold.
I'm with you brando_commando - 32GB is the sweet spot for me. If they can get that out, I'm sold.
If Apple launches a 36GB iPhone WITH at-home activation before the BlackBerry Bold launches, I'm sold (again). I already have had two different iPhone 3Gs which had horrible issues with calls and 3G. This of course was before the 2.1 update, so hopefully I won't have any issues if I get a 32gig.
You had TWO iPhone 3Gs in the past two months and you're trying a third one?
@ brandon
sales ppl are the worst. I remember a particular one who was begging for a punch in the face with his automated "check the website" response.
- So does this one have WiFi?
Check the website.
- Does it run Symbian?
Huh?
- S60?
What?
- Well what does it run?
Nokia OS.
- You sure about that?
Check the website.
Technically, you can do at-home-activation if you buy from an Apple Store. You still have to sign up for the AT&T contract with the Apple Store retail assistant, but you can activate the phone itself at home.
@ybd
Yes, that I have. I know it sounds ridiculous, but I really do like the iPhone platform. I'm currently using my refurb 4GB iPhone, which works extremely well. I just can't live without 3G speeds. I doubt at-home activation will come back, so I'll probably be buying a Bold come the 2nd.
In the Netherlands the phone is sent to your house. Then, of course, it is activated at home.

All that storage and not enough battery power to do anything with it!
Meh - I'd be topping the charge every day anyway. Well, at least Monday through Friday. Can you say free electricity at work?
You can buy an external battery at this web site. www.mophie.com It snaps into the bottom of the iphone. Make it a little bigger, but it doubles the batter life! Great for traveling or if you spend a lot of time emailing and things.
if you're worried about a spike in your power bill from charging a cell phone, then your job isn't that great anyway.
I get away with charging mine once every other day because i shut it off at night. I really dont give a flying fuck what anyone needs to say to me at 3AM. It can wait till morning when I get up.
And yah, keeping a spare USB charge cable at work is always a great idea. Might as well use their power to charge your device :)
True Jared, if my list of gadgets were restricted to a cell phone...
My point was, seems like everyone of you missed it, is that pretty much nobody has 32GB of music and uses most of that space for videos. Videos kill this things battery like crazy, even more so than the thing already lasts. Because its a phone, it just doesnt make sense to use it as a primary PMP, especialy because the battery cannot be hot swapped. I do store all my music on my phone though, but its very rare when i actually listen to alot of it. Its a good idea, converged PMP and cellphone, but the battery tech just isnt there yet.
Actually, John, I don't have one video on my iPhone at all.
I DO however have a ton of music. People ask me "Do you even have 32GB of music? Why would you need 32GB of music on you at all times?"
Well the answer to the first question is Yes - I actually have several hundred gigs of music on my computer that I legally own.
The second is yes, I absolutely need 32GB of music with me at all times. Reason why? My music is encoded at very high bit rates.
Those little song quote number Apple gives you on the side of the box are for crap encoded music not really worthy of listening to through any decent set of headphones, let alone a hi-fi system.
I personally encode all of my music at 320kbit CBR. They take up a LOT of space. But let's compare what they sound like over a decent set of speakers/headphones and I'm telling you, you will be a convert.
So the moral to this story is this: beyond the occasional YouTube video, I never watch video on an iPhone. I get why people use it that way, and that is totally cool, but I am just much happier listening to music, and I'm willing to bet there are quite a few people out there that feel the same way... and to us, the battery life on the iPhone is actually pretty fantastic.
Cheers
I have to agree that the greatest weakness of the iPhone and iPod Touch is the battery. The more versatile and useful the device is, the more time is going to be spent using it. So while some people say that they can't get a full day's use out of an iPhone, it's because it' nearly in constant use unlike many other maker's smartphones.
I feel that Apple should dig into that overly large cash reserve they're building and invest in a company that is on the cutting edge of battery research. Get a few patents and exclusive rights to a long life battery that would be untouchable by other handset makers. If they could get battery technology that has 20% to 30% more life, it would give Apple a huge advantage on it's mobile devices. This could also be done in concert with their designer chip venture which is also supposed to yield ultra-low power processors.
Mobile devices are becoming Apple's biggest revenue builders, so a high-tech battery would be useful for them now and well into the future. Combined with the custom low-power processors, we are talking a huge advantage which could yield devices with a choice of very powerful handheld devices or medium power handheld devices with much greater battery life than other companies handsets. It's win-win for Apple.
You encode all your music at really high bitrates then use an APPLE PMP to listen to it?
All the encoding in the world can't stop the bad sound quality
@Phoenix
Bro, I just cannot agree less with you here. While the fidelity of any device that is a few millimeters thin isn't going to rival the quality of a McIntosh MC2102 power amplifier and a set of reference monitors - but the sound quality of the iPhone, touch, nano, and classic are VERY good when you pair them with the correct set of headphones. So let's get into that conversation real quick because I love me some headphones.
I personally have several different sets of headphones that I've collected over the years and still use regularly.
First off, I DJ on the weekends, so i have a pair of Sony MDR-V700DJ full coverage headphones that i got when they came out way back in 99 or 2000. They still sound great today even after being lugged around clubs, festivals, raves, and parties over the past 9 years - and they sound fantastic with my iPhone (and iPod before that). When they finally die I will probably replace them with a pair of Pioneer HDJ-1000s. They sound amazing. Both the Sony's and the Pioneers can be had for around $150. Many of my DJ friends swear by Sennheiser products - which i do think sound nice, but no better than the Sonys or Pioneers and I don't find them aesthetically pleasing.
Secondly we have in ear models.
Etymotic Research makes quality in ear models. very high end drivers and baffled in design. I have a set of ER-6 Isolator Earphones that attach to my custom molded earplugs that i had made because I go and see a lot of live music and would like to keep my hearing for a while longer. Etymotic is a quality company and I highly recommend them. They have models at all different price points so they are very accessible. The ones i got cost about $120 at the time (then later on i added the custom molded ear pieces). For those of you that have unlimited budgets and want the chrem-de-la-chrem, check out www.ultimateears.com . Ultimate ears is a company that Logitech recently bought out, but they make the absolute best in ear monitors out there. Pretty much every musician out there uses their products on stage to monitor vocals or instruments, but they will make one HELL of a nice pair of custom molded iPod headphones for you. If I ever won the lotto, I would definitely be splurging on a pair!
I also had a pair of Shure in-ears and they sounded great, but they just did not fit my ears well at all so i ended up selling them. Shure makes EXCELLENT quality in ear headphones as well and can be gotten at very reasonable prices. I believe they start around 80-90 bucks.
I also have a set of Sony MDR-EX90LP earbuds that my wife got for me for X-mas last year. I thought they looked kind of cool, but my expectations were pretty low. After i got used to the way they felt in my ears, they actually sound excellent. Crisp highs and almost subwoofer like lows, and they twist into your ear canals so they stay in place really well. I always wear these when I'm jogging. They were about $100
Finally i have a cheepie pair of Sony MDR-EX85LP/B that i use when i'm doing grungy stuff like mowing the yard or washing the cars and I don't want to ruin a nice set of headphones and they sound surprisingly great... and they were cheap. I think i got those on sale at Best Buy one week for $40.
Anyone that buys an iPod or Sansa or one of the 5 of you that bought a zune, the first thing you should do is get yourself a decent set of headphones. Even the $40 pair i mentioned here will sound leagues better than the supplied buds that came with your player. (personally i leave them in the box brand new because I know within a year I'm going to be putting it up on eBay so i can upgrade to a new model).
@Ryan,
Why CBR? I use lossless, so I understand the audiophilia, but isn't VBR a better option if you are going to go lossy in the first place?
You can thank me, I just ordered a 16Gb from Fido....
Murphy happens....
Huh?
I wouldn't exactly categorize this under Murphy's Law...
This is why built-in, non-replaceable memory is a bad thing.
I don't care.
Even if low ranked, I still don't care.
I don't care that you don't care. Actually, I don't think anyone does.
No actually you're wrong, if apple fanboys dont care that I dont care, they're not everyone.
And FYI, I dont care that you dont care that I dont care.

Muhammed:
Yeah. I DO care a lot more than you do. Funny that I'm posting on the damned article so much less than you are. Go away.
ok, I'm sorry.
A 32gb iPhone? Sounds likely. But not the home activation/
“Wait for iPhone Three” “that’ll be the one that gets it right.” Stephen Fry.
I'm holding back till then no matter how many GB's you throw at me.
Yeah he just missed the Gee from the end of the three :p
no I kid I'm thinking the same thing at the moment
I know I always listen to actors for tech advice ;)
That said, the lack of video, disk mode and tethering suck. I'm getting over the lack of ability to send files by bluetooth though.
They way I see it technology improves pretty quick anyway. I know the ipod is hard drive based and the iphone is flash based but. I60gb? compared to 8gb now 16 gb then soon 32 gb. Im not getting an iphone till the storage space gets way more and the battery life gets improved. I have a sony ericsson w810 i use high quality mp3s and the sound quality because of the earbuds are pretty good. Audiophiles will know it hisses at low volume but they sound good. I really like the iphone, love it actually, but the prices they're charging for it are ridiculous And i guarantee the storage space will get higher. and the prices will fall. Also I text alot and its dang hard to do it effectively with an iphone. So beyond all the hype it's just not there yet for me.
does this mean a possible 64gb touch? after all, the touch has always had a higher capacity than the iphone.
they just released the bigger ipod touch. iphone will be soon to follow in 32 gig variety, and then the touch will be presumably upgraded or a new product will take its place
The reason the iPod Touch has always had more storage than iPhone is simple.
Space.
The Touch uses 2 16GB flash memory chips to achieve it's 32GB. There just isnt the room for a second chip in an iPhone due to all the other gizmos that have to go in. So if Apple wanted to put out a 32GB iPhone, they would have to use a single 32GB flash chip.
Well, up until just recently, those were EXTREMELY expensive and it just wouldnt be cost effective to bring that product to market. With prices on larger capacity flash chips falling at record paces, a 32GB iPhone is iminant.
So to answer your question, a 64GB Touch would absolutely not be out of the question because it could house 2 32GB memory chips. It would just be a matter of economics - could Apple bring them to market at a pricepoint that consumers could stomach.
ok makes sense. thanks
The reason this makes sense is that Samsung has released a 1.0 inch 32GB SLC memory module.
I gots the info and I is sharing it:

Makes sense.... will compete with the G1 (T-Mobile Google Android Phone)!
The G1 is completely worthless as long as it stays an exclusive on Tmobile. Who the hell even uses tmobile? AT&T and Verizon account for 120+ Million subscribers in the USA.. verizon needs an Android phone pronto!
@loosely_coupled
The day Verizon brings the G1 to their lineup will be the day:
1: the G1 get's effing crippled with verizon's version of a "good os"
2:Android officially sucks balls by letting it be touched by verizon's dirty hards.,and
3:Google wakes up after being given the date rape drug the night before by a party verizon threw to convince Google to let verizon have the G1.
That's pretty much how it's gonna go.
as much as i hate to say it, i really think the G1 is going to be a huge flop. The Android OS may be well and nice, but the G1 itself is an exercise in design by committee, as it is heinously ugly and will be uncomfortable in the hand and awkward to use. I dont know who to blame, HTC or Google for that. And don't get me wrong... I'm no Apple fanboy, I was really, really excited for the G1 until I saw the hardware... and sadly, considering the other stuff HTC is putting out nowdays, like the HD, i have to lay the blame for the awful mis-step in design to Google and tMobile's insistence on low-cost phones for cheapening the hardware. I can already see the reviews in my head... "Google's entrance into the mobile OS market ruined by poor hardware"
@EmoChick....whatever
Sorry, but I have to disagree with you here. Verizon may cripple MANY of their entry-level phones to try and push more services and sales (hell, they have phones that don't have an mp3 codec so that you have to buy music from them at $2/song), but as an Android developer let me tell you it is nearly impossible for a carrier to cripple Android.
The Android processing stack gives ALL SOFTWARE, even the core apps like Contacts and Phone the same priority. They can also be supplemented by any application the user installs. Given the very open nature of Android, even if Verizon ripped out every application on there and replaced it with their own, it'd be a 2-second process to simply install the universal versions from any other phone.
To be honest, the thing hurting Android right now more than anything IS the devices. I don't think (or at least I don't hope) that the G1 is the only Android phone to come out over the next few months, but if so it would just be more of Google's perpetual "beta" - the G1 is not a mass consumer device, and that's probably why they're giving it to T-Mobile, and not, say Verizon or ATT.
@ Brad
that actually makes perfect scenes. however, i do think i would have been a better idea if HTC designed them a more eye appealing device, beta or not. functionality is huge, but appearance is plays and undeniable role as well as marketing. if Google wants to pull customers they have to have and appealing device, hopefully they will and I'm sure off all companies they can do it. plus take it beyond T-MO, their coverage and customer base won't do a lot for them, unless they get like a Sidekick appeal.
Hello....?!?!?! Are people forgeting the G-Phone is launching next week... Apple has to call for some added attention somehow.
If they do home activation i'll be pissed. I didn't buy a 3G iPhone and cancel the contract for nothing -.-
wow... I just bought an iPhone 3G 16GB. What would the price be to replace/upgrade it to the 32GB?
& what would the timeframe be that I could do it because that would kinda suck if I had to pay the full
amount for a new phone.
Yeah, I'm wondering the same thing. If it's within 30 days, can we exchange a 16gb for a new 32gb? I just got mine at the beginning of the month . . .
i'm with you two, my 16 gig is just a week old. if it comes out while we are still within the 30 no penalty cancelation period could we just cancel the account and open a new one 5 minutes later?
Yeah,, WTF! I just got my white iphone 16GB less than an hour.... it's here sitting beside my MBP....
Damn it!!!! and my cousin bought it from Switzerland and gave it to me here at Thailand. So... i guess i can't exchange it then.
Funny thing is, my iphone is unactivated yet. The slider part went back to the old school "slide for emergency" style. It contradicts what other posted that iphone have to be activate in store only... hmm
any help?
Same boat, bought mine 9/10-
You guys are safe, whether you bought your phone at AT&T or Apple, you are allowed a 30 day grace period to upgrade the phone ONCE with AT&T and use the "buyers remorse" within 30 days for Apple.
The in home activation is not happening, unless they raise the price. Even then, I still don't think they're going to do in-home activation.
Android has absolutely no selling power to the general public at the moment. The reason the iPhone is popular is because it was a product that was developed for years and completely destroyed everything else available at the moment, in my opinion it still does, because everything else out there is completely pulling influence from the core concepts of the iPhone, which apple has now had what? 5 years to develop?
Google has the right idea about simply developing what they want themselves, but if they really knew what they were doing they would have got it out there before the iPhone it it big with the entire world.
If you mention to Android to the average person they will have absolutely no idea what you are talking about, if you mention iPhone to anyone they can immediately associate with what it is.
for all those that wonder about the in home activation, get ready to eat your words. . .
Google can't have considered a the necessity of releasing a mobile OS before the iPhone. Don't forget that the iPhone gave a much needed push to the concept of feature-rich mobile internet.
Just bought the new iPod Touch, and lemme say the 32 GB is a WELCOME capacity. I sifted through all my crappy music, took about half of it and now I can throw a few old standby shows on their, such as The Boondocks! I honestly didn't understand why they didn't push a 32GB model from the get go. ALSO, randomly, fuck you, Best Buy salesman who told me that the iPhone and iPod Touch were the same thickness. I was too lenient to bitchslap you with the iPod stashed in my pocket after I had felt up a white iPhone, noticing it was thicker, and felt sticky! Fuck you for trying to tell me the cases for the iPhone would be compatible! I didn't trust you for a second!
Oh, and the new iPod Touch's form factor is a dream compared by the old one. Has this old non-fanboy, but lover of sexy, shiny things clamoring for the next refresh!
i doubt he/ she actually knew that they were different.
@claude: I do believe that's the point.
@claude
Then (speaking at someone who works at Best Buy) he/she was suffering from a severe case of the retards. You only have to look at the iPhone (either of them) and the Touch in relative proximity to one another to see that they're not the same form factor at all. The first iPhone's considerably thicker than the touch, and the curved back on the 3G is even further away from the iPod Touch's shape/thickness. I work at Best Buy Mobile, and I swear I spend half my day steering iPod Touch owners away from the iPhone cases and back to the ones for their device. Whoever spoke to MastaFalse must've been a sympathy hire. Meh.
Android will still rule iPhone 32gb
Android is a completely different philosophy than iPhone. iPhone is intended to be very easy to use, and do what it is designed to do very well. Android opens up the phone's potential, but will not be as simple and intuitive as the iPhone. Personally, I am a fan of both, but comparing the two is like comparing OSX and Linux. One does its job nearly flawlessly, while the other lets you customize virtually without limit.

wtf!
As many others have said, the advent of a 32 GB iPhone is not far fetched. However, in-home activation does seem a bit odd for Apple. The whole reason that in-home activation was slashed was so the phone could be subsidized by AT&T, thus removing the number one reason people did not purchase the first generation iPhone: price. By returning in-home activation, the prices would have to be increased, or Apple would somehow have to lock you into a plan with AT&T. I cannot see how you could lock someone into a plan without forcing them to sign up at the store. With that said, I think 32 GB iPhone is a possibility, but in-home activation does not seem likely. Not one bit.
Nice move that would be. However, I think I'll hold off for now. I have 4Gb free on my 16Gb iPhone 3G so it wouldn't make sense for me to buy this new 32Gb and give my current 3G to my wife and sell the 8Gb 1st Gen iPhone on eBay. Now, if they added more to this new 32Gb like longer battery life and better Bluetooth support, then, maybe then, would I part with however many Benjamins El Jobso decides to charge for one. Another nice thing would be if they bring back the alumminium backing on these. I hate the plastic backing.
64 gb touch next? i ran out of memory on my 30gb ipod video. i had to delete some great stuff to make room for heroes season 1. *sigh*
Well... According to what Jobs said previously, the ipod touch will always have twice the capacity as the iphone at any given point.
So...they would release a 64gb touch with a 32gb iphone.
Yay, Heroes Season 3 starting next monday!
*sorry
If it weren't for the absolutely terrible sound quality, I could dig a 64GB iPod Touch.
the at home activation may not be far fetched because in the Uk that is how you activate a pay-as-you-go iphone
Wait a sec. I thought you could do in-home activation now? i just ordered 2 iphones from my work's ATT Premier site and they are sending me the iphone to activate at home.
It must be for enterprises only.
It most likely means that you will be able to purchase them from Apple online now or buy it in store and just walk out with it and do the in home thing. I ordered mine from Rogers, and they sent it to me. I plugged it into iTunes, put my SIM in, and I was done.
they should upgrade there 2.0 megapixel camera first
If a 32gb Iphone does get released, hopefully a 64gb touch will follow. I still don't like the way Apple goes about handling it's products, but considering the fact that Itunes is the only competent video download service I've found so far, I definitely wouldn't mind a ipod touch loaded with video. Its either a 64gb touch or a ipod classic and I'm not too keen on watching video on the classic. Make it happen Apple, I know you want my money.
A 64GB would be ideal... but we're getting there!
So does this look real? I was planning on buying a couple on Monday but if I can get a 16GB device for $199 in a week or two it would be worth the wait. How reliable are the sources on this?
People seem to immediately assume that because Apple may release a 32GB version of the iPhone, then Apple will release a 64GB version of the iPod touch. Come on! Despite the fact that the iPod touch was updated less than two weeks ago (which, if upgraded/bumped up to 64GB would make a lot of people very angry), can you guess how much a 64GB device would cost? Unfortunately, the technology for 64GB's in the current touch form factor is not that great, and if Apple had or has the opportunity to do bump it up to 64GB, don't you think they would have done it a few weeks ago?
If this rumor is true, then I have no doubt that they will drop the 8GB once and for all. What Apple doesn't want to do is jepordize their iPod sales with their new fancy iPhone. The ideal situation would be for them to have a somewhat larger capacity iPod (classic, or a higher storage touch), so that way people like me with a lot of music/media would need or want two devices, and iPhone and an iPod.
The thing that people constantly forget is that "normal" memory prices don't apply to Apple. As the largest consumer of flash memory in the world Apple gets the best pricing on flash memory in the world. They also have scheduled price drops, etc, built into their supplier contracts.
If the wholesale cost of a 32GB chip is $250 Apple probably pays $100 for it.
I was hoping for around December. This feels too early for such an upgrade. I figured they'd follow the same life cycle as the original iPhone and bump up the capacity sometime around January, letting the Christmas rush drain the stock of the 8 gig model.
well, they still could release a 32 gig and keep the 8gig.it would be most likely 399,until after christmas.then they would make a price drop.At least that's how I see Apple doing it.The smart thing for them to do anyway.
Uh.... say what?
Apple has to double their storage on the *iPhone* in response to the Zunes announced last week?
Exactly when did the Zune become even the tiniest glint of a threat to Apple?
And I say that as a long time Zune owner who's quite happy with it...
Sorry, I think you guys are reaching here.
About fucking time. Now i have a reason to dump my 8gb 1st gen. Lets just fix the major bugs and we will be cooking with real gas :)
gosh... I wanted to get myself a iPhone next week or so because nothing there were no new iPhones on the Let's Rock event, but now I've got to wait again...
If 32Gb were possible, what wouyld the pricing be? $399 w/2 yr contract
that's exactly what I was thinking. And even of it did happen I'd have no reason to dump my 8GB iPhone 3G. I still have 6.4GB left, I have about 33 songs, 100 photos, and 30 Apps. I will be deleting the apps that I don't use anymore. So storage isn't an issue for me. And when it does become an issue, I will have a higher capacity device by then.
Of course there were no new iPhone announcements at the Let's Rock event, it wasn't meant for iPhones or Computers/Notebooks. It was strictly about their PMP's (Nano's, Touch's), and iTunes.
And I think that right on the heels of updates to the Touch and the Nano, there probably won't be any new changes to these until at least 2009.
Most likely the iPhone 3G won't be seeing any drastic changes until 2009 either. Apple still has a ton of stock on both their models, and will be looking for the holiday's to get rid of those. Until those start clearing off the shelves, then they can introduce a refresh to reintroduce interest & pick up the sales again.
a 64 GB iPod Touch would be very beast.
In-home activation is not likely. The reason they stopped it in the first place was to get people to stop getting on other unwanted networks.
32 GB iPhone? This somewhat frustrates me on how I'm an early adopter and I got an 8 GB so quickly, in which probably in a month (or less) I could've gotten a 16 GB for the same price. But I don't mind. It's how it is.
Apple better woo me on the notebooks.
:-P
that would immensely crappy. I got my 8gb iPhone like 2 days ago
