Nikon's ritzy D60 Black Gold edition DSLR seen in the wild
We've seen Pentax put the Midas touch on a few of its DSLRs before, but Nikon? In a rare effort to draw attention to its D60, the outfit has evidently unveiled a "Black Gold" edition which merely adds a few niceties in the way of revamped trim. In other words, you'll see no upgrades on the camera that aren't cosmetic, and unless you're really into that gilded look, you may not even appreciate the Gold Edition strap, logo'd box, gold shutter button / strap lugs and the shiny new D60 badge. Is $50 too much to ask for those puny tweaks? Answer with your wallet, please.

Really? Its just a few gold bits...
Eric Tousignant @ Sep 26th 2008 9:46AM
@ I LOVE THE CAPS LOCK KEY : I don't think so... I seen it (well... the pictures...) but i think it's too much!
@ Muhammad-Oli : That's especially what I like about it... it's subtile, so you could still use it if you had one!
But am nowhere near to have one... I'm Canon-fan!
But if I well red that line : "Is $50 too much to ask for those puny tweaks?", Yeah... if I was in the market... I'd take that one for 50$ more!

I would take a regular D60 into urban areas instead of the Gold Edition. If the word "gold" is mentioned in any product name, you're probably going to get mugged.
Wwhat @ Sep 27th 2008 9:39AM
Yeah those primitive people in urban areas won't recognise a nikon DSLR as valuable until it says gold on it.
RyanTV @ Sep 26th 2008 9:46AM
I love Nikon, but this is just silly!

I personally couldn't care less with my camera (I'm invested in canon anyway) but I'll go out on a limb and say that there could be some photographers interested in aesthetics (being artists,) and as nikkor lenses are already black with gold highlights, would want that to carry into their body. They wouldn't be using a D60, but w/e.

I know... theres no such thing as Black Gold, or are they talking bout Oil?
Tim Spence @ Sep 26th 2008 9:56AM
I don't care what a camera looks like, so long as it gets results. Give me a turd with some good glass on it, and if it's got a 10MP+ sensor and produces good pics, I'm there.
The only people who care about this sort of thing are pure consumers who care more about what Mr Jones next door thinks of how successful he is, rather than how good the photos are.
ScooterDe @ Sep 26th 2008 10:26AM
presume you want live view with that?
Fed @ Sep 26th 2008 9:58AM
I'll stick with my D80 thanks anyways Nikon.

Someone needs to take Nikon to the side and tell them Leica used to coat their gold cameras in actual 18K gold! And the leather is replaced by lizard skin.
Now that's a special edition!

I didn't know Xzibit was pimpin' cameras now!
I really have to follow his exploits a little more closely. I'd like a bit more advance notice about his upcoming pimpin' projects.
thenugespeaks @ Sep 26th 2008 11:10AM
That's soooo 80s. It reminds me of my "ghettoblaster" I had in junior high.
Karl Hackswell @ Sep 26th 2008 12:10PM
I know its totally tacky and gaudy, but for some reason I really like the look of this. Not sure if I would ever buy one...but I really like it.
CraigJ @ Sep 26th 2008 12:41PM
The perfect accessory for an Escalade with the gold package.
Looks pimp yo.
No thanks.
jakjak9210 @ Sep 26th 2008 1:21PM
thats awesome, any word on if it will come to the d40 or d40x?
goldemi @ Sep 26th 2008 1:35PM
gold package is the new douchiness. (eh, since the 80's)
Peter F @ Sep 26th 2008 2:13PM
I don't get it. The photo isn't blurry.
Nikonian @ Sep 26th 2008 4:20PM
Nikon released a few cameras back in the 70's and 80's that were actually gold. It's extremely rare to find one nowadays but all you have to do to see one is Google the words "gold" and "Nikon".
Wwhat @ Sep 27th 2008 9:45AM
I think it's well done, better than all the crap with zirconium on them or swarovski and stuff, this is subtle yet has bling, although if you have some class you dump that belt for something a bit less loud perhaps?

I bet they end up selling the B&G version for the same price but its a Ritz exclusive...Best Buy and other retailers do this all the time...with Ipods and Nintendo Ds etc
