Slowly but surely, MSI is following in the
laughable footsteps of ASUS. At first, the Wind was
simply the Wind. Now, we've a smattering of
variants to keep up with, and according to a recent interview with director of US sales Andy Tung, that trend isn't about to stop. Starting next week, the Wind U100 will be available at an undisclosed "large national retailer," with the 3-cell / WinXP version going for $399. Additionally, Tung gave us all a reason to hold off on making that very purchase by revealing that the business-minded Wind U120 (or Wind 2, as he called it) will be landing on US soil in late November or early December. Said machine will boast "a whole new look," new HDD / SSD options and inbuilt 3.5G WWAN connectivity for under $600. Also of note, MSI's internal research has found that
Linux-infused netbooks get returned four times as often as units with Windows XP; we can't say we're shocked that people don't feel like learning a new OS, but we're deeply, deeply saddened that reading comprehension levels (particularly on specification labels) in this nation are so obviously low.

waiting for the dual core atom...
Ryan @ Oct 5th 2008 2:29AM
Why? The dual-core atom will kill the battery life. The dual-core atom is for nettops.
Monarch @ Oct 5th 2008 2:34AM
Yeah the whole extra 4 watts will kill battery life

Me too... As soon as a netbook comes out with Atom dual-core and HSUPA, I'll just buy it !!
iofthestorm @ Oct 5th 2008 3:09AM
@Monarch: that's still twice the power consumption, although the chipset probably uses more.
d00b @ Oct 5th 2008 4:29AM
I'm waiting for AMD to get off its ass and release an Atom competitor for the nettop. It's easier for AMD to release a low-power version of the 780G and the X2 than for Intel to whip up a brand-new low-power chipset for the 330. Grapevine sez November. We'll see.

Keep waiting.
The rest of us will be having fun with the stuff we have now. :p

I think we have been through this before. The biggest power draw problem is the chipset not the CPU.

1. Can't say I'm too surprised to hear of the high number of Linux returns. Even if people do realise that's what's written on the box, netbook vendors have not tried at all to manage expectations.
2. Funny how Acer, with the number of Aspire One models nearing double digits, has managed to avoid engadget's wrath. I can only imagine its because a) they are cheap and b) they didn't change the name or the basic form factor, just the (battery/memory/OS/hard drive/3G radio). Asus and MSI, take note: it pays to get it right the first time.
SteveS @ Oct 5th 2008 10:11AM
Maybe people in other countries don't like Linux netbooks but we here in the US have yet to even get that option of buying a Linux-based Wind. Also I wonder if that "internal research" counted those recalled US-headed Linux Winds with the pirated movies on them as "returns"?
Benson @ Oct 5th 2008 11:57PM
I'm not denying the higher return rate at all, but for most netbooks, the Linux versions cover a lower (although overlapping) hardware range. So if people are trading up from the low-end models for performance, it's gonna be biased towards Linux.
It'd be nice if they just let you order any bleeping OS on any bleeping computer, but I guess nobody wants their OEM Windows licenses getting a wee bit more expensive.
Student Driver @ Oct 5th 2008 3:45AM
I am ordering a Dell Mini 9 tomorrow, so it will keep my G1 company (both in terms of toy usage, and in "waiting for shipment.") I do wish that you could just buy the upscale version with Linux for the same as XP (it costs a touch more, and it "may impact shipping date.") The Ubuntu screencaps look nice, but I've read of at least one owner using Vista on it and it's fine. Since it will be used for web stuff, along with being a glorified PMP with Bluetooth support and video conferencing, I'm not too worried about raw performance. Should be fun.

W has always bragged about never reading a paper and Ms Palin (an acronym for Paris Hilton it seems) could not mention the name of one newspaper when asked in the Kouric interview. And she has a degree in journalism! We get the govt we deserve...

No?
I give up.
Why would anyone need to read a "newspaper", again?
Hung @ Oct 23rd 2008 12:17PM
Come on, toysandme, if you're going to insult someone's ability in the field of reading, you should at least follow grammatical and mechanical standards. I'm not for McCain, but if I don't want Obama and his running mate under the same slander, then I must defend the integrity of both sides.
Quotes within quotes employ single tick quotation. i.e. "'...deeply saddened... low.'" hahaha so true!
Your "joke" that "Ms. Palin" can serve as an acronym for Paris Hilton doesn't really make sense. Unless you can provide an acronym, I'll have to assume you don't understand the difference between acronym and synonym.

I'm not surprised about the Linux model returns. And I don't think it's due to people not realizing that they're buying something non-XP. Linux is a great OS but despite people shouting out loud that it's easy and any dumbass can use it, it's really not. No, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to use it but in a day and age of hitting install or uninstall and depending on a pretty thorough gui, filled with icons in the OS that do EVERYTTHING; linux is a little behind for now. Customers will obviously go to what's more familiar, XP may not be perfect - but it's damned easy and it's very practical.
I love Hardy Heron and I absolutely love the eye candy and how quick and 'easy' things are - until there's a problem and then I have a crap ton of reading to do before I can really move forward. And there are problems. I've had issues with drivers before, I've had issues with software, I've had issues with errors causing the ui spontaneously put me back to the login screen mysteriously...I've had many problems. Despite the efforts of various developers, installing hardware is still not as easy as your typical Windows XP/Vista/OSX. Granted, on a netbook there should be 0 issues with whatever hardware you want to install (since as a non-technophile you're limited to external hard drives/cd roms pretty much - which are all/or mostly as easily installed on XP, just plug them in), but at the root of the matter is software. You may have a metric load of options, but you may not find something familiar that you like. You may not know where to look. And you may find something, but you may not know what 'flavor' to choose. There will always be that program that won't run on Linux properly and I expect that this is what is happening. People see the price and go, :"Hey, cheaper...and since I'm only surfing the web I can deal with Linux"...then come to find out they want to do more than surf the web - they want to listen to mp3s or play movies and while this is simple enough for most of us...it takes some effort and getting used to within Linux.
The other issue is on the developer end. We're used to being 'on our own' with Windows. We get it, and we go out into the world wide web and find anything that works on Windows and play with it. Linux is much different. There are several flavors of Linux 'installs' so to speak, and then figuring out how to install it is another story. Sure you can probably find what you need in the software installer? But will Linux virgins know this? Hell, I consider myself at least a novice and I've screwed my Linux completely before by installing KDE alongside Gnome. So, if you're going to market a product with Linux, you have a responsibility to recognise that it's nothing like Windows and provide as much 'guidance' as possible. Either with software packages or something else. And many vendors have only done a 'cover story' job of doing this.
MaW @ Oct 6th 2008 2:57AM
Actually I think it might be because a lot of people aren't aware of the possibility of an alternative operating system. They might be aware that Macs are different, but the Wind isn't a Mac so if they get it home and find it running Linux they're going to be surprised, confused and their instinct is that there's something wrong with it. This is not what I wanted.
What does 'Linux' mean to the average ignorant computer user anyway? Not the people who read Engadget for the most part, but the people who keep spammers in business.
James @ Oct 5th 2008 5:32AM
MSI better fix the crappy trackpad and click buttons on the new Wind.
KilgoreTrout @ Oct 5th 2008 7:12AM
I own a MSi wind (rebranded and smarted up by Medion) and I am perfectly satisfied with its "Synaptics" made trackpad.
I was a bit skeptical too when I saw that it sported only one (dual function) button, but after a few minutes of use I was surprised and pleased to notice how well and precisely it worked.
Since this is not the first time I read of people complaining about the Wind's trackpad, and everyday I have the proof of how baseless this criticism is, I begin to suspect that these judgements are made only on the base of the trackpad's look on a picture, or on repeating a criticism read elsewhere just to have something, anything, to say on the subject.
I've always been surprised to discover how some of the strongest held of people's opinions are based on nothing more than earsay or/and factors totally unrelated and irrilevant to the subject in question.
So the wind's trackpad is bad, the iPhone is the best, G.W.Bush got elected and the lemmings keep on heading toward the cliff.
Mark @ Oct 5th 2008 7:30AM
Actually, Kilgoretrout, the new Wind has a Sentelic trackpad that lacks basic stuff like scroll zones and tap to click.
James @ Oct 5th 2008 6:54PM
I have the wind. The trackpad is too small and the dual function buttons are still crap even if you like them. And since I don't have small hands to work the worthless trackpad and the dual function buttons, I have to resort to using a mouse for the precise cursor movements I'm used to.

It is starting to look like the Wind will stay among the top contenders for christmas

digitallysick @ Oct 5th 2008 7:50AM
I have a msi wind the only down side is the 3 cell battery isn't enough. So i need to buy a 6 cell or better but its almost 1/3 of the cost of the whole netbook. I hope the next versions don't feel as cheap and come with wireless N
Ian @ Oct 5th 2008 8:19AM
They always put Linux on the s*** version of netbooks, and WinXP on the more expensive version with better specs. Perhaps people are returning the laptops because the stats are crap, not because of Linux.
Hmmmm.....
And why do companies keep selling us 3-cell netbooks. Are people actually going for those? The only reason those sell is because some buyers don't even think to check whether the unit they're buying is 3-cell or 6 cell. They may not even know the option is available, or that "cell" refers to the size of the battery.
Ian @ Oct 5th 2008 9:00AM
My Wind 3 cell REPLACED my Dell D620 Core2Duo 2.00ghz. I put a 250gb drive and upped the ram to 2gb in the Wind and guess what? It does everything I did on my D620. The 3 cell lasts 2.5 hours and is LIGHTER than the 6 cell. I am VERY rarely away from a wall socket for more than 2.5 hours that I'd need to use my laptop. 1 hour train ride is about the longest I go that I need my laptop, and even with bluetooth tethering to my phone for EVDO internet, I still have over 60% of the battery left at the end.
Jeff McNabb @ Oct 5th 2008 8:26AM
I wish one of these companies would make a netbook that had osx86 hacked hardware already in it. Of course it could never be advertised, but it's obviously do-able (google if in doubt) and it would just be a "coincidence". They'd sell a little better.
It appears the Mini 9 is closest to having done this, but still coming short. It's not that hard. There's soundcards, ethernet cards, wirelss and trackpads that have these drivers already out there, they just haven't all shown up together in one machine.
That said, I think I'm going to exchange my G4 book for a hackintosh book one of these days.
It's seems like apple should notice that a $500 leopard netbook could be fast, better than the rest, and extremely profitable. MacBooks have been one of their best seliing pieces of hardware ever, but a 9 inch, 2 pound machine would be handier, and cheaper to build, as long as they remember that THIN IS NOT EVERYTHING. (The new nano's boring specs show that they are (he is) still believing that to be the case.)
For a look at what this could be like, I will direct you here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/nevember/2914121167/
(or here: http://img374.imageshack.us/my.php?image=macjiffyxl9.jpg)
Anyway, it's just a thought. Even if it was as thick as the Dell or Acer I still think people would by it.
It wouldn't hardly cost them anything either. It would make OSX more popular, much like the iPhone makes it's OS popular. Because I popular/highly-used OS makes for more apps as well. If they don't do so I'm looking at one of these Winds to run Leopard.
Just... thin is NOT everything, you know? Isn't it disappointing that the currenty low-end Zune is essentially better than the current low-end iPod? The nano doesn't even meet design standards... using the accelerometer throws everything off.
But I'm way off topic.
Small and light is great. Thin... is a bonus.
Ian @ Oct 5th 2008 8:51AM
>>>"I wish one of these companies would make a netbook that had osx86 hacked hardware already in it. "
No way anybody is going to do that. It's illegal, and while it may not matter to you or I, it matters to a company. On the other hand, if a company deliberately made hardware that was compatible with OS X, and you were to illegally put OS X on it yourself, then it's not their fault, is it.
Ayle @ Oct 5th 2008 9:18PM
I think that's what he meant in the first place but it didn't come up right...
Phoenix987 @ Oct 5th 2008 1:08PM
"Major Retailer" probably means Circuit City, since they have the Wind on their website now. It would only make sense, so I don't know how likely it really is to happen.
And I am sure that Linux got returned 4x as much as XP. People are idiots and most were probably too stupid to read. I'd blame the education system but we don't really have one anymore in the US...
MrBoB @ Oct 6th 2008 1:05PM
It seems most people are posting comments about netbook buyers being too dumb to use Linux, I don't think that is the problem. Linux is so easy to use today that anybody can use it.
The problem is that these OEMs put broken janky Linux distros on the machines, and then don't fully test them to make sure they work properly.
But by all means, blame Linux.
