Toshiba's MacBook Pro-esque Satellite E105 arrives at Best Buy
The Toshiba E105 has been sneaking around the fringes for a few days now, but apparently it's not just announced -- it's available for purchase. That's right, the oddly familiar looking 14.1-incher can be had at Best Buy for the totally reasonable price of $1,199.99, packing a 2.26GHz Core 2 Duo, a 1280 x 800 TruBrite LCD display, 4GB of RAM, a 320GB hard drive, and an Intel 4500MHD integrated GPU. The Satellite also sports 802.11a/b/g/n, an HDMI out, Vista Home Premium, and that all-important fingerprint reader (just remember, this increases the odds of someone cutting off your finger). The laptop is available right now online, no word if it's on store shelves yet.

silver+black = 90 percent of all notebooks = ugly
Doesnt look like a MacBook anyway.... Take a look at the old COMPAQ M2000, has the same looks.....
Why does this cost so much? The gpu is pretty bad, the display is kinda low, it has an awesome processor and way to much ram and storage.
Oh yeah, this screams "Sale somewhere educated consumers aren't!"
I agree. Where's that discrete GPU? Compared to a MBP the price does look attractive though.
I have to wonder if that isn't the point -- get part of Apple's product margin by undercutting them, while still overpricing it.
i don't know, I'm not tracking this segment of the notebook market, but it does seem a little overpriced. And the look did make me wonder (before I read the headline) if this was another fanboy rumor.
Could be a massive coincidence, of course. Anything could be. I say it's not.
Think of the first thing a person new to computers would ask for, its "how bigz is the hard drive?" or "duz it haz a fingherprints readerer?".
Toshiba is taking away the MBP market (the very small one) by selling a PC that looks as though it has better specifications for less price, when really they've cut out things that a normal consumer WOULDN'T look for, such as the dedicated graphics. You gotta think in terms of Toshiba not the customer.
You can never have too much RAM.
meh. 'nuff said.
It looks a lot more like my old 14.1" Compaq V2000 than a MBP.
It doesn't really bear any resemblance to the MBP pro at all. The hinges, size, keyboard, speakers, optical drive, etc, are all totally different. Those components are all almost exactly the same as the V2400 though.

Exactly, who knew compaq was years ahead in styling.
I was just about to say exactly that. Damn. It looks nothing like a MacBook Pro, someone has had too much to drink methinks.
you actually thought engadget was serious about the e105 looks like a macbook pro? nah, it's just engadget being engadget.
Engadget does seem to regard everything as Apple-esque, even if the competitors have already done something similar in the past.
Yeah, honestly. I'm writing this on my MBP and that laptop looks (and is specced) nothing like the MBP. Perhaps Engadget's building has a gas leak?
I was just thinking it looks a lot like my V5000.
Yeah... I wondered what resemblance this held to the MBP, other than the fact that part of it is aluminium. it's not like aluminium has never been used before.
@HunterXI: Perhaps it is Engadget's Mac Pro that has a gas leak.
This is available in store, I saw it at BB in Christiansburg VA earlier today.
some stores have it on shelves, some don't. most probably have it in stock though.
I really don't see why Engadget needed to put "MacBook Pro-esque" in the title when it is doesn't look much like it at all. If it looks more box-like does that automatically qualify it as a MB Pro look-alike? Is Engadget once again suggesting that companies copy everything from Apple?
Yes, yes they are.
Anything which bears any similarity to _any_ apple product, at all, _MUST_ be an apple clone. You know, clearly. The same way Aero = Aqua, Dell DJ = iPod, Windows Search = Spotlight, e.t.c.
The only thing I see similar are the round edges. This thing lacks the MBP's iconic all aluminum body and keyboard, thinness and lowered screen hinge. Quite ridiculous to say it looks like the MBP.
Actually, the answer to the question is much simpler: putting a product name from Apple, or "Apple", or Steve Jobs in the article's title generates page views and clicks. It's just a cynical means to drum up more traffic and we've all fallen for it. Anyone with eyes can see that all this laptop has in common with a MacBook Pro is that it is silver in places.
Anyway, porn is way better on PC!
I think Engadget compares everything to Apple in order to ruffle some feathers and generate page views/clicks.
Also, putting "macbook" in the post title helps with the search engine optimization.
Profit!
feel shame to see this with Tosh and the terrible price
Am I missing the mousepad? Or does it have a secret/not cut out one in the usual spot?
And how the f**k does this look like a macbook pro? Because it has a 14.1 inch screen? Or because its a one inch thick rectangle?
By the way, I've decided that my thinkpad looks exactly like a macbook. Not only does it have a 12 inch screen, its black, it has a keyboard, and I can put CDs in it.
This is a 5 beer MacBook Pro.
4gb of ram??? windows doesnt even see past 3gb.
normal people rarely uses dual cores. companies really should focus on nice, cheap, lightweight laptops. im still waiting for mine for $300!
Except for the fact it has Vista 64-bit, so it can detect something like 128GB of ram or something way up there like that.
XP64 and Vista 64 both can address up to 128 GB of RAM.
The "3 GB" RAM problem is a limitation of 32-bit operating systems only being able to address 4 GB of RAM total, but some of the 4 GB is taken up by video RAM and virtual memory, leaving only around 3 GB of actual RAM available on the machine.
Yea......First thing i thought when i saw this was "WAIT! IS THAT A MACBOOK PRO WITH TOSHIBA PRINTED ON IT?!?!?!"
LOL...wait....no i didn't. Infact I STILL see no resemblance no matter how hard I try.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder i suppose...(but come on...mbp?!?! they are SO much better looking! come on!!!!!)
ugh engadget just shut the fuck up, this doesn't look anything like a fucking macbook pro and you along with so many commenters on this site make us mac users who just want to use our computers and not make value judgments of people based on their computing preference look like fucking mongoloid elitists like the rest of you
Think I'll hold out for something carved from frickin' 3D lasers instead.
I own a MacBook Pro, which makes me ask...how the fuck does that look like a MacBook Pro?
Are you guys model blind or something, or was this another crappy attempt in a series of crappy attempts at sensationalist writing? This laptop doesn't even remotely resemble a MacBook Pro, regardless of where you guys want to start.
Talk about an epic fail...
This is one of a series of (temporary) exclusives to Best Buy called "Blue Label Laptops." Basically, Best Buy partnered with a few manufacturers to address the most common complaints that customers had with laptops in an attempt to create a better product. An exhaustive survey was done and some of the top issues were things like battery life, backlit keyboards, preloaded junkware, and the manufacturers warranty. Our store setup this laptop a few days ago and I was surprised to boot it up and only see 4 icons on the desktop. Sure there's still trialware on there but not as much as what you'll usually find. "Blue Label" laptops come with backlit keyboards, a 2 year manufacturers warranty, and about a 4 hour batter life. That's where the high price point comes from.
And yes, the second we unboxed the Toshiba, I thought "Mac Pro" rip off case.
Interesting. Do you have any scoops on which Blue Label laptops will be coming with backlit keyboards?
Glossy trackpad... last time i used a glossy trackpad, i threw the laptop on the ground, and no i'm not kidding, the are sticky, and not very precise... i like the trackpads that have a texture, that don't stick to your finger.
I'm not a fan of how thick that seems to look, but I really like Toshiba's newer designs here. They have to be seen in person, but the surface there is pretty much seamless. The touch pad is built straight in to the case without a gap, and in a lot of them (U400 and U405, for example) they have the speakers and keyboard area attached in the same sort of way. The end result is wonderful to work with because it doesn't have endless gaps to catch / store horrible particles of stuff.
Why did so many people freak out that this was being compared to a MBP... too many mac owners furious that something could come even close to how their glorious laptop looks? I think it does look somewhat like a MBP, it has the same general shape and somewhat of the same color, it looks more like a MBP then say a thinkpad or something.
shape and color?
why yes, it is a rectangle with silver on it
Actually, it's a round-rect, and comparatively few non-Apple laptops have that combination of large corner radii and flat sides.
where is the touchpad? it is not in the image and there is no nub mouse either.
hey it that is soooo much like a mbp!

Puh-leeze. The Gateway P-7811FX would score five times the 3dmarks, for only 50 to 100 dollars more. (My Best Buy must have had a sale, because the BB website lists them for $1400)
As someone else said... this is Best Buy's Blue Label Series

There will also be an HP...
no one said it looks like a macbook air douchebag
A "macbook air douchebag"? No, I suppose it doesn't look like CLAK.
if it's running Windows, NOTHING is "reasonably priced"
no, it's you who's unreasonable.
I /think/ I'm with BB. ...but then, I'm pretty sure I've been paying a $100 premium just to not have to screw with windows myself....
*shrug*
At least it's not, say, eight times that.
FUGLY joke of a machine
I guess he's officially considered a troll. You wouldn't want to feed him, would you?
ill just use my lovely full featured inspiron 1420n and keep laughing at YOU.
..then when we order my mom's new inspiron 1525n on wednesday, I'll laugh at you some more.
laugh at the specs of this compared to a macbook air???
I'm an Apple user and all, but you just had to (unnecessarily) slip an Apple reference somewhere in this article, didn't you.
How a joke it is. Only the similar color as MBP? Walton-esque comments should be charged from now on ...
Seriously, why aren't any of us allowed to reply to Clak's comments? Did Engadget give him special permission to be an Apple troll?
Is it really that hard? He's exploiting (initially by accident, and now deliberately) a slight bug in engadget's comment scripts, but nothing you can't work around on the fly with Firebug. (And it's pretty obvious how, IMHO.)
Go 'way please; you don't need another account, you need a life.
I agree... porn is better on pc!
It's on shelves at my best buy.
Style?....its "appawling" :->
take this from a reliable source. It is already in the stores, they just haven't put it on display. Just ask one of the guys/girls to bring it down from the top, and you can get it today.
This doesnt look a mbp it looks like a piece of crap
I unboxed this in Best Buy. I was fairly impressed until I saw the price. No thanks!
IMO it's more IdeaPad S10-esque than MacBook Pro-esque.
Everyone wants to be a mac now-a-days
hahahaha come on el cheapo but bloated made in china owners I mean apple owners bwahahahahah
toshiba is just giving steve jobs his own dose of medicine.
mac specifications even fell short of NEO notebooks [if you know those assembled in the Philippines notebook line ups] at 1/4 yes, ONE FOURTH the price of a mac you can have a better mac notebooks at a far better quality specs and performance than a made in china by foxconn re-badge as apple by steve jobs bwahahahahahahahah
