Motorola VC6096 is world's heaviest WinMo device
Like your smartphones with a little heft to them? Check out Motorola's new VC6096, an oversized Windows Mobile 6.1 device for those with inventory (and employees) to track. The 4.85 pound behemoth is intended for dashboards, not Dockers, and features a wealth of connectivity to ensure your workers are never offline, like HSDPA, 802.11a/b/g, and Bluetooth too. It also offers SAE J1708 and J1939 ports for communicating directly with the systems of whatever vehicle you mount it in, and a SiRFstarIII GSC3ef/LP GPS chipset for pinpointing exactly where your last shipment of widgets was delivered. The front sports a 6.5-inch VGA touchscreen and a backlit 65-key keyboard, while inside hides 128MB of RAM plus 256MB of flash for storage and a 624 MHz XScale PXA270 processor, a faster version of the same chip we've seen before in other shop-minded portables. Price isn't set, but this could be the must-have gadget for your fleet in '09.

There is defiantly a market for this, you make it in excess. This would sit nicely in a delivery van.
humps @ Oct 9th 2008 5:26AM
This is exactly what they don't need in ANY car! Don't give them many small buttons to fiddle with when driving, FFS!
rock99rock @ Oct 9th 2008 9:35AM
@humps
Unless its a drive-by delivery, I think everything will be ok.
avis @ Oct 9th 2008 5:10AM
the very logo of Start button makes me feel that it's going to be a very slow journey, going to take long time to do anything, need to wait frustratingly long time, depressingly slow...could any psychologist tell me what I'm suffering from? will the cell phone manufacturers ever hide this button and menus ?..
PS: sorry posted the same on another moto blog
Muhammad-Oli @ Oct 9th 2008 5:15AM
It's just for shops? Hell, I'm gonna get one of these and lug it around with me just for kicks. Screw the 'smaller is better' phase, I'm going retro. I'm gonna put it in my cargo pants while I skateboard and listen to the Offspring.
lawrra @ Oct 9th 2008 5:18AM
This isn't another moto blog...
allislost @ Oct 9th 2008 5:24AM
I may not be a psychologist, but I'm sure your suffering from obtuseness...
Symptoms may or may not include; senseless bashing, forgetfulness of one's low IQ, a love for all things Apple, and believing the moon doesn't rotate.
loosely_coupled @ Oct 9th 2008 6:24AM
It's called trying to shoehorn a user interface design paradigm created for desktop computers into a small touchscreen. It was a terrible idea a decade ago when it was created, and it's a terrible idea today. Why MS still can't produce a decent smartphone interface given it's unlimited resources and talent I do not know...
SimbaDogg @ Oct 9th 2008 11:49AM
you're a dummy...
By the way, "thats a big bitch!"
juan @ Oct 9th 2008 5:19AM
i think it would be a hassle to carry when not in car
blissend @ Oct 9th 2008 10:07AM
Yes, but the crime deterrent feature will be handy. Not everyone will like getting hit in the face by a 5 pound device.
cy21 @ Oct 9th 2008 5:31AM
HAHAHA!!!! looks like a brick... what's the world coming to?
michas_pi @ Oct 9th 2008 5:34AM
That bezel could be a little thinner.
Aerodynamics @ Oct 9th 2008 5:43AM
This will be the new status symbol.
Just like the people who use hands-free headsets WHILE holding the phone in their hand, you'll see people walking around using both hands to hold this to their ear.
Muhammad-Oli @ Oct 9th 2008 6:58AM
Haha yeah. Just imagine in a few months time, what used to be the iPhone crowd will be commenting on here saying 'The Motorola VC6096 totally pwns this!'
Billy K @ Oct 9th 2008 5:46AM
Does this smell of ZX Spectrum 48k??
yode @ Oct 9th 2008 5:59AM
Say hi to your mother for me, alright?
Luke D @ Oct 9th 2008 6:04AM
What the hell?
Patriks7 @ Oct 9th 2008 6:05AM
World's ugliest as well?
Sam Zebian @ Oct 9th 2008 6:14AM
god damn that is UGLY! I know it's used for business though so it doesn't matter as much, but still, they could have made it look at least a little bit better.
rock99rock @ Oct 9th 2008 9:32AM
Blasfemahhhh!!

+1 for the Snatch reference

I'm gonna assume you're taking the piss. I sure hope you are.
ChrisTheFeral @ Oct 9th 2008 11:26AM

BIG, UGLY, WINDOWS MOBILE, USELESS, BRICK, HEAVY, is this why people suffer and use windows mobile over a luxury iphone, thank god for steve job and apple
jayiw @ Oct 9th 2008 8:43AM
1994 called and they want their device back!
Ohjeez99 @ Oct 9th 2008 4:14PM
this must be the q13.... screw slim smartphones, fatass ones are the way of the future
Kris @ Oct 9th 2008 8:46AM
Oh my goodness, that is disgusting!
PeterF @ Oct 9th 2008 9:00AM
OK people, we understand, it is ugly, but it is not meant for personal use. It is for business use in a car! It has a nice big screen so you can read it easily.
ZSX @ Oct 9th 2008 9:20AM
It reminds me of the Husky Fex21 which also has that "open book" design. The execution is better in the Fex21 though, and I like its turquoise colour scheme, as well as the Handheld PC Pro OS which, in my opinion, has a UI which suits the laptop like design better than the Windows Mobile one.
Nate @ Oct 9th 2008 9:24AM
I think everyone is missing the point with this device. This model from Moto or originally Symbol is typically used as a fork lift truck mount. Maybe people are now starting to use these VC's in delivery vehicles but they are most for fork lift trucks.
rock99rock @ Oct 9th 2008 9:34AM
@Muhammad-Oli
Where is my royalty check.
Jash Sayani @ Oct 9th 2008 10:03AM
Looks ugly.....!!!
Roger @ Oct 9th 2008 10:04AM
for some reason, I miss my Speak-N-Spell
Pretend Geek @ Oct 9th 2008 5:21PM
I thought that too. It's just missing the handle on top.
Garst @ Oct 10th 2008 4:42AM
Someone could write a program that would make this thing a Speak N Spell
fd @ Oct 9th 2008 10:36AM
Only VGA?
At that screen size they should have used SVGA, imo, and the device would be more versatile.
Darren @ Oct 9th 2008 11:31AM
It's like an iPhone with crazy retro 80's calculator style.
asg84 @ Oct 9th 2008 11:54AM
this model is not bad :)
u can do some exercises for ur biceps and triceps using this :P
gyros23 @ Oct 9th 2008 2:26PM

i never thought i would say this but, that thing is uglier than Sam Cassell!!
The_Steven @ Oct 9th 2008 2:38PM
Dang! I thought my Tilt was heavy!
JOSHUA @ Oct 9th 2008 2:41PM
Man, This is too big for the Cell phone world.
I do see FED-EX and DHL drivers having this.
Predict @ Oct 9th 2008 2:44PM
Moto is the Lehman Brothers of the Mobile Industry with such products its time for them to go belly up. And now its a good time
after the US finance industry, the car industry also the mobile producers can go down the drain.
maxter @ Oct 9th 2008 9:07PM
Motorola still does gadgets with off-center screens (Q11 anyone?)... oh my, where are we going?
Kip HT @ Oct 9th 2008 11:49PM
Now THIS is a true iPhone competitor
Garst @ Oct 10th 2008 4:51AM
For some reason this reminds me of the Remco handheld video games, as well as the Speak N Spell.
