It's hard to say what we've come across here, but if our retinas aren't deceiving us too badly, this looks to be an in the wild shot (sans blur, amazingly) of Dell's forthcoming E Slim. If you'll recall, we caught a glimpse of said device
way back in June, and the two look at least
marginally similar using the oh-so-scientific eyeball test. But look, even if this thing isn't the E Slim (though we're guessing it is until proven otherwise), we've been
told on numerous
occasions that Dell is mulling the idea of pumping out a netbook with a
10- to 12-inch display. An accompanying screenshot of the unit's internals was also provided, and while the model may say Optiplex1210, we're guessing that's just there for prototyping purposes; besides, the listed CPU matches up quite nicely with the aforementioned
E Slim specs that slipped out this summer. So Round Rock -- when are you going to come out and get official with your 12.1-incher? Before or after
this coming Tuesday?

Dual-core Atom option + discreet graphics option + $599 or under = sold.
Agreed!
Make that two. This is what I've been looking for.
add a touch screen and I'm sold.
I fear it'll be more expensive. And even some more here in Europe, as usual.
dell will rule the world if that happened ....
I'll buy one just because I'm so glad there's a non-blurry spy shot of something for once!
"add a touch screen and I'm sold."
I hope not and they probably won't. Just another useless feature for the majority of the consumers out there.
Hmm, my mini is coming in today. That keyboard looks beautiful compared to the mini 9, but it's ok.. I just want something light to carry around to classes.
The keyboard looks identical to the one on my Inspiron 700m, except maybe the label on the Window key. It is really bad (small, cramped) and makes my fingers hurt like hell (now I use a full-sized USB keyboard). They really should have made the keyboard bigger like another poster suggests.
@hc5duke Exactly. If they're already going with that tiny keyboard, they should make the whole unit smaller as well. Not sure when they axed the 700/710, but this is just a refresh on that. It's no netbook. And given that, up the specs a bit!
Vista... Geesh. I hate how these truly mobile computers are being anchored down by a bloated desktop OS.
Nice design, though. I'd nLite an XP install for it quick, though.
Calling Vista bloated is so original! You have opened my eyes to a whole new way of thinking. Thank you for the insight.
Dude, he was just pointing out that Vista on a netbook is less than ideal for performance. What is it with all the annoying sarcastic remarks on engadget now?
8-ball....
Yeah, and you're the first to call for a dualcore CPU in a NETBOOK. Have fun with your 27 minutes of battery life.
Why be such a wacktard, by the way? I bet it makes you look really good in the real world when you attack people's casual comments. Good way to make friends.
I don't have some asswipe screaming "BLOAT!" every time somebody says the word "Vista" in real life. Wouldn't you get sick of it if every time somebody said "it's hot in here" some moron started singing Nelly? Hear/see the same crap again and again and again and you have to wonder which idiots still consider it relevant to say/write.
And a dual-core Atom isn't going to produce 27 minutes of battery life, now is it? The whole point of the Atom is low power consumption. It will still draw a minute amount of power compared to a standard proc. Otherwise what would be the point of it?
Ok... so Vance was wrong about the dual-core thing. It's true that a dual-core Atom still consumes very little power and would be perfect for a netbook. But back to the original remark - nobody was screaming bloat, you ass. Again, Vance was pointing out that Vista is not very suitable for a low performance netbook. If this post had been about a new full-sized laptop or desktop, THEN it would have been irrelevant and immature to call Vista bloated because laptops and desktops are what Vista was originally designed to run on!
@Vance:
Who comments engadget to make friends? ROFL.
Anyway, you're the one trolling around, try look at the power consumption of the dual core atoms again. Saying 27 minutes is just spreading FUD. Same with saying that Vista is bloatware. Ask any of the Mini 9 owners, they say that Vista runs fast, if not faster, than XP on their SINGLE CORE atom with aero enabled. I'm siding with the person who's getting the facts right. Don't spread lies.
Love,
Your Non-Friend
@ Ryan
I think Vista is way underrated. I like it and have not had problems with it. I think most of the bad rep that has been given Vista came about because when it first came out there were some difficulties caused by people not running vista on good enough machines and because it was a new operating system. I mean come on people! Most everything has problems when it first comes out! But anyways, I totally agree with you. :)
What happened to the Dell we used to know...
With your economy in shambles i wouldnt expect this for less than $650
"Your" economy? Which parallel dimension are you commenting from and how can I get there?
economy be dammed ... I'm spending my money on electronics!!!!
Budman approves!
so does duffman...yeah!!!
Let's just hope they come in "fun colors"
I don't know why they don't the keyboard go to the edge; it was just make sense so that they could put in a full-size keyboard
The whole keyboard!?
I think they accidentally the whole keyboard
Wahahaha.
I think that it because there stuff on the sides that blocking where the keyboard would go. I don't a full sized keyboard would even if they did the keyboard all the way to the edge. There much room anyways.
it looks like its been spotted at the beach - not the wild!
LOLlLOlLzieZ
what is the bar on top of the netbook screen that looks like the start bar and how do u get that
I was wondering the same thing...googled it and came up with nothing that looked or sounded like it. Maybe something for Windows 7?
It's the Dell Dock utility they ship with the Mini9 and possibly newer Inspirons, but I'd be surprised if it show up on a Latitude notebook.
Ahhh! Cool! Thanks! XD
I spy Function keys!
Optiplex are desktops.....
May i be the first to say:
DO WANT!
This thing would be an excellent accompniment to my desktop PC whilst at college.
They better get rid of that dock before they get sued by crApple.
Apple can't sue for the dock or Konfabulator would have gotten sued a long time ago. You know why they can't sue over it?
They didn't invent it.
Well 12" is no longer really 'netbook' area, but its definitely where I become interested in these light and cheap systems. I miss my old 700m and have been disappointed dell hasn't offered a small cheap system since then. 12" e slim == new and improved 700m
My 700m in still ticking. I think its been almost 5 years since I've gotten the thing. It just won't die and is zippy enough with XP. My speakers don't work anymore though. Its a lesson learned for me, never buy a notebook whos speakers is in the monitor area.
12" is still small, but compared to a netbook, it's not THAT small, or small enough.
Um, I have a 12" and my gf thinks it's not small.

It's the Lenovo X61s tablet you sickos.
x61s is 2.7lbs and much more capable. Even the Dell Latitude E4200 is 2.2lbs. This would need to be 2lbs or under for me to bite.
Man of the Dell notebooks look similar.... The Inspiron mini 9 is a smaller similar looking version of this!!
I talked to a Dell rep who was visiting my college the other day and I mentioned to him that I would be ordering the Mini 9 soon and he told me to wait until November when the 12" version would be released and take this with a grain of salt, but he said "it will be the same weight, and the same price as the Inspiron Mini 9"....
Hmm??
everyone is once again trying to copy Apple's originality
Let Apple pave the way for nifty gadgets, so someone else can copy them and I can buy them cheaper!
