ASUS all-in-one touchscreen PC up for pre-order... in the UK
Oh sure, there's absolutely no viable reason for ASUS to slap an Eee moniker on this all-in-one desktop, but it's there, so we just couldn't resist the mention. Now that we're beyond that, this touchscreen-based desktop -- which was peeked way back in June -- is finally showing signs of life courtesy of a formal pre-order page hosted up at Play.com. The all white machine packs a 1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU, 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, 15.6-inch LCD, Windows XP Home, a 1.3-megapixel camera, built-in stereo speakers, WiFi, a slew of ports and an integrated graphics set. The current release date is set for November 20th, though we wouldn't bet the farm on that or anything. At any rate, those unable to resist can plunk down £399.99 ($685) right now and look forward to free delivery in just over a month.

I wonder if you can install OSX on it :)
160gb Touchcreen tablet iPod anyone?
lawyer bird @ Oct 13th 2008 7:58AM
uh 15" and no battery anyone?
arithunda @ Oct 13th 2008 7:55AM
Not bad, ASUS. Not bad.
ScooterDe @ Oct 13th 2008 8:32AM
would suit my kitchen wall
Tom @ Oct 13th 2008 7:55AM
Um...
1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU - check
Low £399.99 price tag - check
Clean white stylings - check
You're right, I can't see any reason why Asus would want to use the eee brand on this one, it's nothing like the rest of the range.
Muhammad-Oli @ Oct 13th 2008 8:00AM
I think engadget just have to shut up and accept the fact that Eee as a brand doesn't mean what they thought it did. I'm getting sick of the stupid Eee comments in every single post they make about an ASUS product.
ilh @ Oct 13th 2008 8:16AM
Might also have something to do with what eee actually means. It's not just a brand name, it's an abbreviation of which the meaning of it fits the products it appears on. Seems Engadget has forgotten that it means "Easy to work, learn and play".
Not only that but to link to the roadmap (about the laptops, not the monitor, box or TV) from July when saying "no viable reason" then go on to say the product was introduced in June...it's not like it's just suddenly got the eee name attached to it now.
Give it a rest already with the diluting the brand crap.
telepheedian @ Oct 13th 2008 8:18AM
Nevermind the fact that the hardware is probably a rehash of the same hardware used in the 1000h and the Eee box, seeing that it has identical specs.
Kirk Reivich @ Oct 13th 2008 8:22AM
I like the idea. But have to agree it looks a bit...tippy.
Ionut @ Oct 13th 2008 7:57AM
I hope its possible to plug in a USB keyboard otherwise all those YM chatty people could get scared away
Optimus Rhyme @ Oct 13th 2008 8:03AM
Ionut I saw this on the Play.com page:
"Keyboard + mouse: Wired Keyborad & Mouse"
So yeah you can. Would have been a big mistake to have an on-screen keyboard only on a device that sits so high on a desk. I don't see any mention of bluetooth though and this thing is screaming for a wireless keyboard and mouse option.
dark star @ Oct 13th 2008 8:08AM
can anyone here build a 15inch touchscreen for under $500??
i cant fathom any puny 15inch pc over 500 these days..
Allister @ Oct 13th 2008 8:10AM
Can I just ask what is up with the prolific use of 'oh sure' in Engadget articles? It's started to give me a nervous tic... tick.
Chris @ Oct 13th 2008 8:12AM
Are you supposed to put it on your lap and poke it or keep it on your desk?
JohnM @ Oct 13th 2008 8:13AM
I sure don't like the look of that stand, to say this is suppose to be a touch screen. It looks a little touch light for one handed touching. It kinda looks like you'd have to hold on to it with your other hand to stop it from falling over!
Chris @ Oct 13th 2008 8:15AM
Wow, how shit does that look.
Chris @ Oct 13th 2008 8:17AM
I really need to register a new name and get an avatar... So many people are named Chris.
Macindows @ Oct 13th 2008 8:19AM
What's the resolution? Please not the crappy 1024x600!!
Thi mam(kris120890) @ Oct 13th 2008 8:24AM
Engadget are really becoming second rate and the whole EEE dilution thing that you keep bringing up is really starting get pathetic. So asus created a new brand of pc and brought products for that brand. So what. Have apple not done that with there i or there mac products. Has microsoft not done that with windows or acer with aspire or gemstone.
blizz419 @ Oct 13th 2008 8:25AM
interesting
Major4Play @ Oct 13th 2008 8:38AM
Bored with the whole sticking it too Eeepc brand.
Asus have already said they plan to spin it off into a seperate company, you know like Asrock was, so they will be creating a whole range for Eeepc so it can float on it's own.
Engadget is heading down a hole of it's own making, mainly a lack of credible editing and fact checking.
coolblue @ Oct 13th 2008 9:13AM
I want a cheaper less powerful version of this as I have been looking for a suitable machine to install into my wall. I want to use it as an info hub where I can look up the weather, tv listings etc and send messages to it from my phone. I can write the software but I need a cheap touchscreen which can be mounted in a wall. This is close but £399 is too much as I do not need that much storage etc.
ZaxCG2 @ Oct 13th 2008 9:46AM
Is it just me or does this scream "Mom's Kitchen Computer" when you see it?
apw76006 @ Oct 13th 2008 10:35AM
That was the very first thought that came to my mind as well.
telepheedian @ Oct 13th 2008 12:27PM
The Audrey strikes back!
mintyfresh @ Oct 14th 2008 3:39AM
There appears to be two different models, the Eee Top ET1602 and ET1603, with slightly different specs. The ET1603 has a better garphics chip - ATI HD3450 rather than the crappy Intel GM945, and also a built in battery. This model is very tempting, only thing i think is missing is a built in TV tuner.
apw76006 @ Oct 13th 2008 10:34AM
I kinda' like it. It would be great for sitting on the right bedside table for those times when I do not feel like rolling to the left bedside table to check the laptop or the Chumby, or for those times when I actually get out of bed and walk three feet to the desktop, or even those times when the N800 has gotten lost under the covers...God, I am so lonely.
Troels C @ Oct 13th 2008 1:12PM
At least you got a cool avatar ;-)
OCEAN 'CLAK' 20th Account Happy @ Oct 13th 2008 12:32PM
lets see its all in one has atom 1.6ghz, 1gb ram, 1024 x 600 screen AN MORE RUBBiSH SPECS. WHO WOULD WANT THiS OVER A LOVELY iMAC WiTH UP TO SPECS, MADE BY APPLE WiTH OSX AND NO CRAPPY WiNDOWS OR LiNUX?
coffee @ Oct 13th 2008 12:46PM
Definitely cheaper than the HP Touch all-in-one, but the HP just looks so much better.
Phoenix @ Oct 13th 2008 12:58PM
1) GO TO HELL
2) it's far, far cheaper
3) some people don't need or can't afford a lot of specs
4)Did I mention GO TO HELL
5) some people don't LIKE OSX. We know YOU love it, but people have DIFFERENT FUCKING OPINIONS AND TASTES. TRY AND GET YOUR HEAD AROUND THIS SIMPLE CONCEPT.
6) It's TOUCHSCREEN
7) Last, but certainly not least, GO TO HELL
Phoenix @ Oct 13th 2008 12:59PM
ENGADGET, FOR GODS SAKE.
That was a reply to Ocean/ Clak
liin @ Oct 13th 2008 1:16PM
Phoenix, for God's sake, click on the right reply to voice your different fucking opinion or go to hell.
Phoenix @ Oct 13th 2008 1:37PM
Oh, I did. Haven't you heard the complaints about Engadget's comment system. And OH LOOK. Looks like YOU didn't click the reply button either >.<
And I'm not the troll here.
mercurysunblast @ Oct 13th 2008 2:15PM
If I had the benjamins, this would be my little sister's computer.
It looks so...her.
Itsuru @ Oct 13th 2008 2:35PM
Touchable?
bounderboy @ Oct 13th 2008 3:41PM
I think this is missing a trick being touchscreen i would have preferred £150 cheaper.
Also if its WinXP how come the press shots show the Linux desktop? Is there going to be a linux only version?
I really like it...
FOREX @ Oct 13th 2008 3:55PM
This is just about the perfect machine. I've been looking for something to hang on the kitchen wall for calenders, recipes, and music management. sweet!
Jon @ Oct 13th 2008 4:22PM
this is probably the perfect computer for an additional add on to an existing computer. this one can do breakfast and a whole lot more stuff. I'd love to see a version without a touchscreen and drop the price slightly more.
it's also perfect for AOL radio, and probably an university student... I don't think one needs to turn on a standard desktop just for such little processing power -- perfect... and i'd really like to see apple bring out a similar product with a similar price (please, no fancy multi-touch driving up the price), although this one I won't even complain, since it's very ideal.
KilgoreTrout @ Oct 13th 2008 4:39PM
If it really runs XP and can be tweaked a bit I'm gonna turn this one into my next Nas connected Media hub.
But since it's not a mobile machine and therefore has got no battery issues I would want the dual core Atom in it.
Plain vanilla Atom and 15" monitor does not convince me.
David R @ Oct 13th 2008 6:35PM
This would be almost perfect as a control panel for HA. Now if only the Atom could handle playback of high-def video...
Robert Barnes @ Oct 13th 2008 8:39PM
Is that an infrared receiver by the power button?
Byte @ Oct 13th 2008 9:24PM
Well, now I have something to mod into my car.
The all in one with touch screen is ideal.. well almost.
The 15" screen is a little large for a car dash.
Anyone done this type of thing and been able to feed engine management info into it?
Maurice Hilarius @ Oct 13th 2008 11:12PM
Would this be a TouchEEE ?
dave @ Oct 14th 2008 4:54AM
I can't wait until stuff like this can do HD MPEG4
No1 @ Oct 14th 2008 6:41AM
I don't think I really need a touch desktop, but I can see the point in a wall mounted one.
What I'd really like is a net-tablet, that would be really sweet.
Caine @ Oct 14th 2008 12:30PM
An interesting piece of work... not sure I'd want WinXP on that tho... and before you get all worked up on that, my desktop has XP and laptop has Vista... The whole thing just screams LINUX to me.. I'd definitely like one myself
