ASUS rolls out Eee PC 1002HA, still mum about next week's model

Still haven't found an Eee PC to your liking? Then perhaps ASUS's new 10-inch Eee PC 1002HA model will be more to your liking, with it bringing some of the S101's stylings to the company's standard 1000 series. Otherwise, you can expect most of the usual specs that now haunt our dreams, including a 1.6GHz Atom N270 processor,1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive and, apparently, a two-cell, 4200 mAh battery. No word on a release 'round here just yet, but it looks like this one will be available in Europe in the not too distant future for €449, or about $565.

a PC so mundane it laughs at itself.
Knives_Out @ Oct 27th 2008 1:21PM
HA!

Can i take two with an extra helping of bezel please!
Chin-Poh @ Oct 27th 2008 1:16PM
It looks exactly like the S101 to me or am I missing something? I wonder if the EEE will make its way into a world record for being the most milked PC brand by fucking far?
nerdtalker @ Oct 27th 2008 1:34PM
And the most confusing branding ever as well.
I'm completely confused by all the different eee's. Their numbering scheme makes 0 sense, the product variety is lost on me, and all the models are too expensive to really merit any attention compared to the first one. The Dell netbook is far more attractive at this point.
Hung @ Oct 27th 2008 3:51PM
Looking at the keyboards, the S101 sports a two-row Enter key and left-placed forward slash/pipe key (British-styled, as per a replier to my post about it) and the 1002HA has a layout to which we Americans have grown more accustomed.
THAT'S FUCKING ALL.
Mike Cerm @ Oct 27th 2008 1:19PM
So, let me get this straight, it's exactly the same as the Eee PC S101, just $200 cheaper?
Asus is ridiculous.
LondonConsultant @ Oct 27th 2008 3:02PM
No, it seems you get it bent. It has similar styling to the S101, but the same spec as the 1000 series. The HDD (instead of SSD) partly explains why it's cheaper than the S101.
I like the direction ASUS is taking here - maybe they will apply similar styling to the 901 as well...
patriotsn1 @ Oct 27th 2008 1:22PM
NICE!! 2 cell battery! Just enough for a serious game of solitaire!
Rotaryfan @ Oct 27th 2008 2:23PM
4200ma/h dude. the same as the older four cell. they improved the battery by cramming twice the capacity per cell as the old ones. that's how they made it so slim I bet. READ!
Precurse @ Oct 27th 2008 3:05PM
Probably not a good celling point in comparison .. They should probably add something like "high efficient 2cell - works like a 4 cell"
Richard Lai @ Oct 27th 2008 4:14PM
@Precurse: I cee what you did there.
aznofazns @ Oct 27th 2008 1:22PM
HA! A two-cell battery! That defeats the purpose of a low-power, ultraportable netbook right there.
avester @ Oct 27th 2008 1:28PM
That's like saying that a motorbike is slower than a car since it has only 2 wheels while a car has 4.
These look like bigger cells than the previous EEEs.
telepheedian @ Oct 27th 2008 3:12PM
My 1000H's 6 cell begs to differ.
ProfessorKaos @ Oct 27th 2008 1:26PM
Snooze, yet another Eee PC
MadMike @ Oct 27th 2008 1:26PM
These netbooks confuse me. The whole point was, its supposed to be able to surf the net. Linux, a few gig ssd, small screen and a decent battery. Does it really take 10,972,453,234.7 models to figure out? And they were supposed to be cheap. I can buy a full featured laptop for $600 - why would I spend $500 on a netbook?
avester @ Oct 27th 2008 1:31PM
Someone wants to play some CS too, someone likes to spend 12 hours writing an essay, someone wants full-sized keyboard, someone wants integrated 3G, someone wants something that can fit into a purse, someone wants to have 500gb music with him, someone wants to have a laptop that can take a bullet, someone wants shiny and well designed piece of art, someone wants to have a touchscreen, someone wants to attach the laptop to TV via HDMI, see where I am getting?
MadMike @ Oct 27th 2008 1:35PM
And I want a pony! See where I am getting?
phanbouy @ Oct 27th 2008 1:43PM
mister would you please help my pony?
he's over there behind the tree.
he can't talk because he's a pony
i think it's his lung
Todd @ Oct 27th 2008 2:37PM
I think most people will use them as a second notebook, but I agree with you somewhat on the price points being too high. If you're patient, you can score one on discount for $4-450. Here's one currently on sale http://www.techdealdigger.com/deals/asus-eee-pc-1000-40g-449-at-newegg/4672
At that price, I could justify having one of these to take on trips/drag around the house.
MadMike @ Oct 27th 2008 2:54PM
I have looked around. I want a low priced, SSD, Linux Eee netbook with an Atom, just to play around with.
StalematE @ Oct 27th 2008 1:29PM
I feel like even ASUS is tired of the Eee PC... I know I sure am.
avester @ Oct 27th 2008 1:32PM
Selection is always a bad thing, bad Asus bad! I want the 7" Bezelmatic with crappy celeron!
digitallysick @ Oct 27th 2008 1:34PM
2 cell battery??? are they serious??? they should quit making netbooks with no less than a 6 cell battery
Jash Sayani @ Oct 27th 2008 2:25PM
Just what I was going to say...
"Still haven't found an Eee PC to your liking?..."
Well a 2 cell battery is definitely NOT my liking !!!
Dopefish @ Oct 27th 2008 5:38PM
its 2 cell *4200 mAh* - thats only 200mAh less than my Latitude D430's 6 cell battery.
ionman @ Oct 27th 2008 1:43PM
"His nomadic really could be lowered if its autonomy did not come forward."
gotta love those automatic page translations. what the heck is that supposed to mean anyway?
phanbouy @ Oct 27th 2008 2:06PM
he's got a wandering penis.
Chin-Poh @ Oct 27th 2008 1:53PM
I think its slightly thicker than the S101, though this has a hard drive vs SSD in the S101. I think most would get this instead IMO, more storage and less expensive, I think people can live with the drawbacks of the HDD vs SSD.
Its not like the cheap SSDs in netbooks are the same caliber as the expensive ones in normal notebooks.
Stranger @ Oct 27th 2008 2:12PM
I can't see why people complain about all the different models. The only thing Asus has done is choosing a single name for each configuration. Compare this to say.. IBM which for each base model of the Thinkpad line kept like 50 sub-models. One with bluetooth, another one without. One with a dual core Pentium, another one with a single-core Celeron. One with dedicated graphics, another one with integrated. One with a high-resolution screen, another one with low resolution etc.. And they all used the same name, like Thinkpad T60 or whatever.
Sure, Asus could call them all EEE PC and be happy with that, but I prefer simplicity in names and configurations.
Brooks @ Oct 27th 2008 2:27PM
No one gives a shit about the Eee Pc's anymore they come out with a new one everyday.
Mega 777 @ Oct 27th 2008 2:42PM
I suprised the battery didn't die already before the computer started.
RAQ @ Oct 27th 2008 3:09PM
More choice for the consumer. I think its a great idea, well done Asus keep it it up,
Taling Hallenthur @ Oct 27th 2008 3:25PM
Sarcasm??
They should have 4 or 5 different models in their line up sharing the same case and form factor to keep the manufacturing costs as low as possible.
mackster @ Oct 27th 2008 3:52PM
Lovely device. 10" screen size and 1.1 kg weight sounds perfect. I was going for an MSI Wind but now I wanna lay my hands on this beauty first. I hope the material quality is good as well.
Conceyted @ Oct 27th 2008 4:19PM
Well, since it looks like Asus is looking for ideas for more Eee models. I have been waiting for an Eee PC that has a 6 cell battery, a nvidia secondary card, a dual-core atom, wireless n, bluetooth, and jams all of this into the Lenovo s10 case. You could call it the Asus Eee PC 1000LCDC (Lenovo Case, Dual Core)
telepheedian @ Oct 27th 2008 3:15PM
The N10 is two items away from what you want, one of which will never happen. Also, the single core atom really isn't that bad, you should try it some time.
Pretol @ Oct 27th 2008 7:11PM
My biggest gripe, and I can't figure out (for the love of BABY JESUS) why they can't make the right shift like everyone else does. The right shift is behind some buttons in an odd place.
And here's generic reply to the generic morons:
1. No it's not a Mac - your snotty self has managed to shove your nose up your own ass once again.
2. Battery "Cells" is not a measure of capacity, it's a measure of cells (I don't know why they even chose to list it in the specs, as it is obviously nothing but a confusion for the 'tarded public).
smoo @ Oct 27th 2008 9:25PM
And even the 4200 mAh does not say anything about how the battery lasts. The only number which has relevance is Wh. For example:
Samsung NC10: 11,1Vx5200mAh=57,7Wh
ASUS eeePC 1000H: 7,4VX6600maH=48,84Wh
That means if the consumption is the same Samsung's battery lasts longer than the ASUS one, even though it has less mAh
The reason why the 1002HA has just 2 cells is because it is a lithium ion polymer, they always have two. And it is the newer better technology especially for thin devices because it can have any form. All the other batteries are lithium ionen!
So we first have to find out how many V's it has, then we can calculate...
CraigJ @ Oct 27th 2008 11:20PM
brand dilution FTW
bidur @ Oct 28th 2008 12:04AM
ok. so whats next? eeepc 2000 h ?
jaylettu @ Oct 28th 2008 8:18AM
1002HA
10 = 10 inch screen
02 = model number (2)
H = Hard Drive (not SSD)
A = Atom
How hard can it be? Confusing?
smoo @ Oct 28th 2008 9:27AM
Ach so, 2 comes after 0? Very logically! And where was the A for Atom with the 1000H? There were so many eee's which had an atom but no A in the name!
And 904 means suc-suc-suc-successor of the 901 because it has a 10" housing? It's sucking!
It must be a woman responsible for the names at Asus'!!!
mach1 @ Oct 28th 2008 10:04AM
What ever you do, WAIT !!!
Wait till the damn rebates come out before buying.
I lost my ass selling a 900.
