Panasonic's Lumix DMC-G1 ninja-ships to consumers
Panasonic had us fooled with that press release dating its micro Four Thirds camera, the Lumix DMC-G1, for mid-November. We're not sure what Panny was trying to pull, but when we took a gander at its online store today we discovered that the G1 has already started shipping. The price is $799.95 as expected, so your time has come if you've been dying to try this slim and sexy micro Four Thirds thing out -- though we might wait for a few reviews to drop to confirm that the performance matches the price.

Another G1?
oh this is a camera...
UnixSystemsEngineer @ Nov 1st 2008 4:34PM
Damn, this one takes massively better pictures than that POS camera from TMobile.
Unfortunately, it really sucks at making phone calls and doesn't fit in your pocket at all. :)

There are so many products out there that start with "i" and "G" nowadays that "i" literally see "i"s and "G"s chasing me in my dreams.
Come on ppl, there are 26 alphabets, why cant u use any any other?how about "U"? U looks sexy to me

26 alphabets...
Valicore @ Nov 1st 2008 9:41PM
Hrm.... hyperactive much? It WOULD be kinda cool if a company chose random letters from 26 of the world's alphabets. "Now introducing the man standing on his hands 552i"
Adam @ Nov 1st 2008 9:35AM
Yeah, especially "i", I guess it has something to do with the success of the iPod and iPhone so people guess anything start with "i" will attract attention. I miss creative names :(
chuck @ Nov 1st 2008 9:38PM
Creative names, like Samsung SGH-e105?
The idea behind naming things with, well, words instead of numbers is that the product will be more recognizable by typical consumers. People can remember a word more easily than a long model number. It's SUPPOSED to be more consumer-friendly, and a great way to market a product, but unfortunately, that doesn't really work when there are several products with the same name.
*Awaits T-Mobile G1 vs. Panasonic G1 lawsuit*
Valicore @ Nov 1st 2008 9:43PM
Trust me dude, creative names seem way better in your memory then they actually are. If you need proof just look at the cellular phone industry in the US, AT&T and VZW have some especially hideous "creative" names.

A review for this camera : http://dcresource.com/reviews/panasonic/dmc_g1-review/index.shtml

Good review. I was worried when I read that it didn't have a Leica lens (like the amazing lenses on their high-end P&S units) but the results looked solid anyway.
Cybergypsy @ Nov 1st 2008 11:11AM
Nice will always be able to find it.

You really shouldn't have posted this article: Now I want a DMC-G1 to replace my FZ7.
Panasonic make excellent cameras, and all the reviews point to this being no different!
Johan S @ Nov 1st 2008 1:20PM
Did they hire Tony Stark to design it?
chris joseph @ Nov 1st 2008 1:40PM
Now, how hard would it have been for them to add a video mode? Completely absent. I use it on my current Lumix FZ-5 quite regularly. I've been wanting to upgrade a couple years now, but it looks like I'm waiting to see what's in next year's model.
bebop @ Nov 1st 2008 2:29PM
Next year's model will have a video mode, Panasonic have said as much.
