Fujitsu unveils LifeBook N7010 with secondary 4-inch touchscreen
We were expecting to see Fujitsu's U820 break cover this morning, but the company managed to keep another trick up its sleeve: the 16-inch LifeBook N7010, which features a second four-inch touch screen above the keyboard. Interestingly, the touchscreen isn't a SideShow display, but rather appears as a second monitor -- meaning you can replace the default launcher app with any window of your choosing, including full-screen video. Nifty trick -- we'd have been more into it if it had somehow been combined with the gesture-enabled trackpad, but we'll see if this design takes off. Other specs are nicely on the higher-end of things, if familiar: 2.26GHz P8400 Core 2 Duo, 256MB ATI Radeon HD 3470 graphics, 4GB RAM, 320GB drive, Blu-ray, 1.3 megapixel webcam, and WiFi / Bluetooth. Not bad at all for $1,499 -- too bad we don't have any availability details.

What a wee little keyboard - sweet.
Flashpoint @ Nov 4th 2008 1:15PM
This looks like a great idea. It would be cool to have a lcd like this with customizeable widgets.
But I'm suprised APPLE didn't do this first and charge $4000 for it.
Matthew Hilario @ Nov 4th 2008 1:40PM
Finally a laptop I can put all my stickers on!
Luke D @ Nov 4th 2008 11:36AM
Looks like someone has been paying attention to the "glass touch-pad like an iPhone screen" Mac rumors.
Luke D @ Nov 4th 2008 11:37AM
Oh, and sadly, for Apple fans, it's not Apple. :-(
htd @ Nov 4th 2008 11:36AM
the keyboard can definitely be larger, also I'd like this screen to be the replacement of the touch screen... with a button to switch between secondary display or blank touch screen, maybe...
Phoenix @ Nov 4th 2008 11:44AM
You want the screen to replace the screen?
Evan @ Nov 4th 2008 11:41AM
That is one massively thick notebook!
EB @ Nov 4th 2008 11:42AM
Considering the screen is 16", I have a feeling the keyboard is not as small as it looks.
Matthew Hilario @ Nov 4th 2008 1:39PM
That's what she said.
Phoenix @ Nov 4th 2008 11:45AM
...I want.
But yeah, would be nicer as a trackpad, but still...
Jon Acheson @ Nov 4th 2008 11:46AM
It doesn't seem all that useful to me to put a screen in that spot. It was hard enough for me to learn to touch-type without putting a screen down there for me to look at.
OTOH, it'll be great for Nintendo DS emulators!
Lowest Ranked @ Nov 4th 2008 12:03PM
It was hard to learn to touch-type? Keep 'em on the home-row, bro.
Phoenix @ Nov 4th 2008 2:30PM
It took me a few years, but that's because i didn't try and learn. i just naturally became able to type almost perfectly at about 90-100wpm with my eyes shut. If you actually TRY, it'll be faster.

It's a great place for media controls, notifiers like email and chat, download monitors, alerts, etc.
Zinger314 @ Nov 4th 2008 12:02PM
It might be a good idea to put a webcam feed in the touchscreen, for all you narcissists out there.
Shela Monster @ Nov 4th 2008 12:05PM
Slide a Sidebar Gadget down to that screen for CPU/Memory and Time...
Or do like I would do, put WMP and have pretty little visualizations or a "movie" going.
(While doing more important things like homework or research..:)
Ayman @ Nov 4th 2008 12:06PM
Is that the New Nintendo DSi ?
Levi @ Nov 4th 2008 12:12PM
that second screen is for porn, duhh
cheeseycom @ Nov 6th 2008 1:57AM
Oh so it's that kind of 'touch' screen, I get it. Hehe. Clever.
bolezhinkov @ Nov 4th 2008 12:32PM
a number of things . . . there is way too much plastic bezel on this beast. the touchscreen shouldnt be way up there either.
in other news - that back ground is of prince edward island, canada. I used to around there with my friends when I was a kid. in the top right corner you see a little house; the old man who summered there was quite uncooperative . . . he'd always be yelling at us to go elsewhere.
BOGRASH @ Nov 4th 2008 12:49PM
perhaps the fugliest, clunkiest heap of crap to emerge in a while. clearly fujitsu feel that 'design' is something for others to fret over
MikeWard1701 @ Nov 4th 2008 12:39PM
Nice idea, fugly implementation.
Chin-Poh @ Nov 4th 2008 12:40PM
They had plenty of room for more buttons or a numeric keypad, what the hell?
Bezel is bad on screens and keyboards.
joe @ Nov 21st 2008 1:33PM
Thats one Ugly B*tch!!!
noname @ Nov 4th 2008 1:55PM
this is what I always wanted and wandered why it is not on the market, but not ABOVE the keybord, but bellow, as a trackpad replacement. Such display can easily do what trackpad, plus such icon navigation etc. In my opinion much better then that 2000$ keybord from that russian guy with small displays on keys. The only thing it need is an OLED
Casanova @ Nov 4th 2008 2:02PM
Kewl. Is it touchscreen?

"Fujitsu unveils LifeBook n7010 with secondary 4-inch TOUCHSCREEN"
IT'S IN THE DAMN TITLE!!!
Josh Ladella @ Nov 4th 2008 7:24PM
nice post history n00b...
MH @ Nov 4th 2008 2:07PM
I think they should have combined the touch-screen with the touch-pad. Heck, if they had done that, they probably could have made the touch-screen-pad *seven* inches!
Wasted opportunity, IMO.
Jinto @ Nov 4th 2008 2:14PM
*cough*ugly*cough*
PK @ Nov 4th 2008 3:16PM
Boy that's an ugly machine.

The price is right!

Just yesterday I was wondering how to strip out my DSPhat's Touchscreen, and create a kind of mini-touchscreen-tablet-thing beside my keyboard..
..
Seems I'm not the only one!!
