New SNES portable is heavy on the SNES, light on the portable

The SNES has certainly proven to be one of the most popular consoles to get the portable treatment among those go-getter console modders out there, and it looks like it's not showing any signs of losing that status, with this so-called SNEP (Super Nintendo Entertainment Portable) only the latest to pop up on our radar. As you can see above, this one is a tad less portable than some other handheld SNES mods we've seen (it also apparently needs to be plugged in), but it does at least do better job than most at staying true to the SNES's (or, more accurately, the Super Famicom's) instantly-recognizable appearance. There's no plans available for building your own, unfortunately, but you can check it out in action in the video after the break.

What is it with modders and SNES? I know it's old school, but its all been done, and a SNES is a SNES, and after 10 or so years (how old IS it?!) all the mods look the same...
Hey Ya @ Nov 10th 2008 5:01PM
On top of that, most of its good games are available for either the DS or GBA.
But, really, this is more about having fun doing the mod than practicality. People do it because they can. To that, I say "more power to 'em."

I like it...but I don't need this to play SNES games.
all you need to play SNES games is a WII or a DS cause THEY'VE RUN OUT OF IDEAS FOR GOOD GAMES SO THEY GO BACK AND PORT OLD GAMES.
[low rank that !]

Yoshi's Island.... an all time favorite. Seriously this game is super fun and super long. I wonder how long it took to draw all these countless long levels. Superb game. Played it for a year on my E65 gameboy emulator.
In the video he didn't even grab the flower :)
fieldcar @ Nov 10th 2008 5:21PM
If you can validate building a porsche kit car that is; slower, handles worse, less dependable, harder to fix, and costs more than the car straight off the assembly line, then you will love this mod.
markyb @ Nov 10th 2008 5:27PM
Or, if you like the feeling of getting something done the way you want it. Why don't you all go back to what you were doing instead of whining about someone else's work. They did it for them, Not you.

I'm kinda with the crowd that chants "why bother?"
Emulation in an ergonomic compliant handheld is already available.
The only novelty and practicality in hardware mods or fabrication would be to try to solve an issue, like left handedness, or limited mobility.
I think that these are talented individuals that are working hard, not smart.
mercurysunblast @ Nov 10th 2008 7:21PM
Looks sorta like a Gizmondo...but with more plastic, if that's possible.

There's good reason to build a SNES portable as opposed to simply playing on a GBA (which is techincally very similar) or a DS. Namely, the GBA had far weaker sound than the SNES.
