Dell's Studio 15 and 17 get art-housed for (PRODUCT) RED
Dell is set to expand upon its Art House series of Studio laptops with three new special edition designs for (PRODUCT) RED. That's right: now you can have an arty Dell and do some good at the same time, with the choice of three different artists: Joseph Amedokpo, Siobhan Gunning and Bruce Mau. The custom designs will be available on Dell's Studio 15 and 17 models for $649 and $799 respectively, and a $20 contribution will be made to The Global Fund for AIDS programs in Africa for each one sold. Dell claims that the art is "permanently infused" on the casing and totally durable, so, just like when deciding on a tattoo, be sure you're really committed before the purchase. And if you're too cool for these designs, well, maybe your slightly hip, gaudy great aunt will be interested. Regardless, they're available now online.

good afternoon, laura
I'm glad you wrote "$20 contribution will be made... for each one sold"
for a second i thought they were just going to donate $20 overall to the program.
LauraJune @ Nov 11th 2008 4:44PM
Well, you never know...
bob sakamano @ Nov 11th 2008 4:48PM
Laura,
I'm honored that you created an account just to have your first comment as a comment on my comment!
happy_penguin @ Nov 11th 2008 5:50PM
Oh brother... *facepalm*
Mobius_1 @ Nov 11th 2008 6:04PM
Well, unless they sell more than one it makes no difference.
JAmerican @ Nov 11th 2008 3:22PM
Always thought (PRODUCT) RED products were always red. Hmmm.
From My Cube @ Nov 11th 2008 3:24PM
how about, instead of throwing what they call "art" on the shells...let me pick my own ( or better yet create my own) cover and charge the extra $20.00 and give that to product red charity....
OCEAN 'CLAK' 20th @ Nov 11th 2008 3:28PM
'i' don't like it.
edcar57 @ Nov 11th 2008 3:29PM
Why 2 Dell Logos On The Lid?
StalematE @ Nov 11th 2008 3:33PM
it's a "feature"
Samboini @ Nov 11th 2008 4:34PM
To detract from the horrendous design.
Patriks7 @ Nov 11th 2008 4:38PM
Well its hard to remove the original one by adding this sticker on there and the other one is there to imitate the (PRODUCT) thing..
Patriks7 @ Nov 11th 2008 3:32PM
Shoo away you fanboi
Anthony @ Nov 11th 2008 3:36PM
So for 599 you can buy a regular one but for 50 more you can get on where they donate 20 to a charity? No thanks. This is the kind of "corporate support" I detest. Plus, I actually only see the high end on offer ($983), no 650 to be found on the Studio 15.
bill cant fart @ Nov 11th 2008 3:39PM
So did Product RED team up with Product BLUE, GREEN, and YELLOW?
Samboini @ Nov 11th 2008 5:13PM
Yes welcome to (PRODUCT) TECHNICOLOUR YAWN.
jamax @ Nov 12th 2008 12:51AM
Go go (PRODUCT) RANGERS!
Erik @ Nov 11th 2008 3:48PM
Please, Dell, just announce the Studio XPS 13 & 16 already!

bangladeshiluv @ Nov 11th 2008 3:48PM
gay. let me count the ways...
phanbouy @ Nov 11th 2008 3:57PM
so today, based on your comments i've learned:
1) wasting gas is good
2) only free stuff is worth buying
3) inanimate objects are gay
man, republicans are really searching for identity this week huh? XD
bikehorn @ Nov 11th 2008 3:50PM
I happen to think it looks pretty cool minus the double logo. The issue of how much they donate though, yeah, that's a deal-breaker.
JR @ Nov 11th 2008 3:57PM
There's something incompatible about the style of the device and the style of the art... they don't go together.
ugg.tryptophan @ Nov 11th 2008 5:12PM
Hey JR, I'm the only one doing lewis structures around here!
jefffaucher @ Nov 11th 2008 6:21PM
@ugg tryptophan...
Ummm, those are not Lewis structures. Lewis structures show little dots representing valence electrons.
I should stop now.
toxicpiano @ Nov 11th 2008 4:07PM
I think it looks really nice, shame about the dell logo

psssh! Picasso was around before the discovery of LSD
BJ is Gooder @ Nov 11th 2008 4:27PM
Picasso is one of the artists for this? Crazy...
zoopthegame @ Nov 11th 2008 4:28PM
picasso used opium and other drugs to increase creativity
yo @ Nov 11th 2008 4:30PM
this is NOT a picasso
phanbouy @ Nov 11th 2008 4:33PM
true, this wasn't his. Picasso was a diehard mac fanboy.
happy_penguin @ Nov 11th 2008 5:52PM
psssh! Picasso was around before the discovery of Mac
Ori Matalon @ Nov 11th 2008 4:25PM
Regarding the design, I have the feeling that this product is something you thnk it's cool when you buy it, then after a month you look at and think "what did I think of when I bought it?" - looks bad in my opinion.

zoopthegame @ Nov 11th 2008 4:29PM
no, picasso is NOT one of the artists for this.
Ludovico @ Nov 11th 2008 4:58PM
Yeah, Dell wouldn't do that- it might actually be seen as tasteful.
Sam Stone @ Nov 11th 2008 4:37PM
Reminds me of A Tribe Called Quets first album cover...
...Sorta, abstract.
Nathan @ Nov 11th 2008 4:43PM
I like it and would buy one if i could be promised that my money wouldn't go to Africa. Until they rediscover the wonders of colonialization then no amount of money will fix their problems. How about throwing money at diseases that aren't the fault of the people who get them?
crsh @ Nov 11th 2008 4:51PM
That laptop looks like it has AIDS, good thing Dell is raising funds to help fight that awful disease.
ijyt @ Nov 11th 2008 5:10PM
I don't like the one shown here, but this one:
http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/corporate/about_dell/HealingPatterns.jpg
looks quite nice.
RG @ Nov 11th 2008 5:17PM
I guess Dell will be reporting higher case/bag sales now. If I am carrying this around I don't want anybody to see it, it shall be hidden until I am in a dark corner.
Smi @ Nov 11th 2008 6:04PM
I just thought I'd share this with you - after checking out these designs on the UK Dell site (Incidentally, I think they're all quite nice. The "Shine Within" one isn't that great at all - but they're all nice designs. Maybe not on a laptop.) and speccing up a system, this happened...a wee bug in their system, perhaps?
Well, I don't know. As nice as the designs are, they might struggle to find someone willing to part with £52,142.70 (yes, the decimal point is in the right place) for them. Screenshot below!
http://img253.imageshack.us/my.php?image=crazydellpricespq9.jpg
Let's be honest, though - if I was to go for a crazy "out-there" design, Mike Ming's simpler offerings of Bunch'O Surfers or Seaweed are by far the nicest. In fact, the ones that are simpler. Even then I reckon I'd go with black, or the topographic grey one if I was feeling daring. I do like the others though, as images.
Mobius_1 @ Nov 11th 2008 6:05PM
I prefer the black one...
DaKizzler @ Nov 11th 2008 6:37PM
That's what she said!
BobTurbo @ Nov 11th 2008 8:53PM
It is a pity the laptop, as with every other dell laptop, looks ugly as sin.
Magallanes @ Nov 12th 2008 8:44AM
This cover will looks as a african style design. Ubuntu anyone?.
Unique Gift Ideas @ Nov 12th 2008 12:26PM
I don't really dig this design, but I am interested in seeing what other artsy designs they're going to be coming out with.
max @ Nov 12th 2008 2:27PM
You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.
CJ @ Nov 12th 2008 8:41PM
I don't see the problem.
Every product manufacturer marks up their products for charity purposes; Look at the (Product)Red iPods. And these actually look pretty cool, and let's face it, what more do you want?
