Dell's Inspiron Mini 9 and 12 get artist makeovers

In recent months we've seen Dell's design department running wild with new colors and art for a lot of their models, such as the Studio 15 and 17 laptops, and the announcement that customizable jobs were on the table for 2009. It probably should come as no surprise, then, to see the Inspiron Mini 9 and 12 get some love, too -- this time in five patterns by artist Tristan Eaton. Otherwise the same under the hood, the paint-jobbed Minis will run you an extra $50 over the base price of each respective model -- $349 for the Mini 9 and $549 for the Mini 12. Check out two more shots of the upgrades after the break.

Please, Dell. Just release the Studio XPS notebooks already.
That's all we really want.
Leo @ Nov 20th 2008 6:03PM
Totally agree. Planning to release Studio XPS 13 and 15 in mid-January (5 months after the competition) is ridiculous. Dell, what the hell?!
1234321 @ Nov 20th 2008 6:05PM
you mean 16
anyway where did you get mid-January from?
Leo @ Nov 20th 2008 6:09PM
Well, some say 15, some 16, its unclear. Initially planned for November, now they say January (http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=291340)
lowdef @ Nov 20th 2008 5:55PM
WHY?
StalematE @ Nov 20th 2008 6:22PM
I don't know, but hopefully if no one buys them, they'll realize that trying to up the price of a computer just because some artist slathered shit all over the cover is a stupid idea... they'll stop production... maybe...
ethana2 @ Nov 20th 2008 7:10PM
Fixing their phone support system was next on the list and they didn't feel like doing it.
mappyg @ Nov 20th 2008 5:59PM

I have no idea what you're talking about, but I thought it was awesome.

came here to post this
Eddie @ Nov 20th 2008 6:03PM
Alright, so come back when we can have our own designs printed. I mean, it's like a piss poor choice of 70s wallpapers!
Ayle @ Nov 20th 2008 6:04PM
I think they should ask the artists who made the zune originals designs for help....
JZ @ Nov 21st 2008 6:03AM
You mean the Zune Tattoo guy?
Anyways it looks pretty cool shame that the Dell logo isnt integrated in the design. I do understand they want to make sure everybody knows its a Dell but why make it look like its just slammed on it after the designer was done.
1234321 @ Nov 20th 2008 6:04PM
The Dell Artist editions are kinda too flashy for me, all they really need is a simple abstract design with a look that doesn't die in a week

Screw you, lowest ranked, your kind doesn't understand me. You don't speak for me. You don't love me.
No one understands me..
ethana2 @ Nov 20th 2008 7:06PM
Wait, crap, that makes me a nonconforming nonconformist.
Ok, sorry lowest ranked, you can be the conforming nonconformist and I'll be the nonconforming one. Sorry about that.
No hard feelings, if you did love me that would just be creepy anyways.

Ouch, Matt. Too bad though, as I am certain 90% of the readers don't even get what you said.

The big bad wolf, a wrench, brass knuckles, diamonds, an imposter 8-ball, a hotdog torpedo and cowboy-hamburger with a revolver?
I guess they couldn't decide who they were marketing this to, and chose.... all markets.
Asvhockey88 @ Nov 20th 2008 6:34PM
Sadly, that represents Detroit.
Note the big D, the car, 5 mile road, Joe Louis's fist, the wrench for a working man
lowdef @ Nov 20th 2008 6:42PM
ok good im glad im not the only one that thought this was a cheesy portrayal of detroit...
Lowest Ranked @ Nov 20th 2008 6:54PM
Just another reminder to never visit Detroit.
Can anyone explain the gun-weilding burger, torpedo hotdog, the wolf and the long-necked clouds with crowns?
I honestly hope there is no explanation...
Ian @ Nov 20th 2008 7:00PM
Fuck all y'all, i actually think they're kinda cool looking.
Mobius_1 @ Nov 20th 2008 7:06PM
That Dell logo is so in the way of everything...
ethana2 @ Nov 20th 2008 7:08PM
It is. They should work it into the art work in some subtle way instead of just having it intrude on everything like that.
Jubei @ Nov 20th 2008 7:09PM
Yes, this is what DELL calls innovation. Notice the similarity of this product with another product that has drawings on the back. Its simply hilarious that DELL is doing a "me too" from a company that has products that are just about 100% "me too" since day one. I can't wait to see the Barbie or Hello Kitty special edition models.
Zeus.:God @ Nov 20th 2008 7:35PM
Jealous because the best you can get is your name on the back of your favorite products? Then again, I know you generally get something along the lines of "I
Zeus.:God @ Nov 20th 2008 7:36PM
Damn commenting system, foiling my plans of a witty attack...
"I *heart* Steve Jobs".
Jubei @ Nov 20th 2008 7:42PM
LOL... poor ZG, don't be so hard on yourself. I know your fingers are quivering with anticipation when you see my comments on Engadget. Your continued sexual innuendos towards me doesn't bother me. I have no problems debating with the gay community. Just relax, you'll be able to comment properly and defend the Zune and DELL. Two "me too" companies that go hand in hand together.
Zeus.:God @ Nov 20th 2008 8:47PM
Defending Dell? When have I ever done that? I, unlike your un-based assumptions, don't like Dell in the least.
Way to go Steve- sorry, Jubei, making a fool of yourself again, tubby. Can see you still have your V-card handy.
ethana2 @ Nov 20th 2008 7:25PM

Evidently I can't throw together lame jokes in a timely manner because people will assume random crap about the apps I use.
Great.
I just don't know frick about image editing, did that occur to you?
ubn2 @ Nov 20th 2008 8:12PM
sorry, im like you too dont know shit about image editing. it seems reasonable to guess that you use ubuntu its pretty much tho only image editing app besides http://pixlr.com/ which isnt great either
ethana2 @ Nov 20th 2008 8:23PM
The assumption that I use the GIMP is correct.
..but the likes of pixlr.com have NOTHING on GIMP 2.6x
Heck, pixlr doesn't even look like it could take on Krita..
giuliop @ Nov 20th 2008 7:52PM
I'll take one if Dell pays me.
