You know as I've had my frustrations with Vista I've considered saving up for some kind of Apple Mac. However over the last month I've become less and less likely of even considering that special Mac that would have had my name all over it. Apple is just having soooo many problems lately
AJR, what problems with vista? Thats an actual question, not a bash. I really am genuinely interested. Check out linux if your not happy with windows. Ubuntu is a good start. But certainly, CERTAINLY don't go mac. They have just as many issues its just the fanboys put up with it.
Well for the first 9 months of having this Vista machine. The system restore could only go back a day or two so when the system went bad I'd have to restore my whole OS. I have had driver issues like every time I plug in my Zune since this last weeks update the OS itself doesn't recognize the zune even though it will be syncing with the software. And it's slower than hell even with the updates over the last year.
So yeah You have a good suggestion and I'll start doing my research and ask some friends and fellow computer enthusiasts for suggestions Thank you
Yeah, Skyride, because you'll never have problems to sort out with Linux...
Macs are great if your brain works like the OS does -- you'll soon see why "the fanboys put up with" any problems; even when you're unlucky things go wrong it's an order of magnitude more pleasant than fighting Windows.
For most people, OS X is a revelation -- "Oh, this is what computing was supposed to be like!" -- but there are people out there to whom OS X isn't suited, too. Try before you buy, because you can unlearn habits, but there's no point if everything is counter to your instinct of what is logical to you.
Neither of these are good solutions, dont listen to either of them. If your computer is having all these device problems and you are having poor performance then it sounds like you have incompatible drivers and an old computer that needs upgrading, not a switch to a different OS. Do you mind telling us the specs for your computer?
AJR, if your looking for less of a headache then Vista has given you, then DO NOT go to Linux. Trust me on that one bro.
I've used Ubuntu, openSuse, and Kubuntu, and while they're pretty with some cool effects it ultimately led to frustration. I found myself in terminal writing command lines more than I liked, and having to search through a shit load of repositories to find some programs that I needed. And if you don't know what the heck I'm talking about, then you have a long way to go. Let me put it this way, I spent more time on the Linux forums, reading through hundreds and hundreds of posts, than I did getting any work done.
Honestly, the guy saying Mac OS is buggy is most likely an Apple hater. There are plenty of them here on engadget. Every OS, every piece of software ever created has bugs. But I will tell you what, OS X has been very pleasant to use over the last few years. It is very simple yet advanced, very well thought out, pretty, and it makes good use of whatever hardware it runs on. It has TONS of freeware, that are designed and written so well, it makes you want to donate money to the devs. The latest version, 10.5.5, is the most stable OS I have ever used, just as stable as Tiger.
My advice is download Ubuntu, its free, and try it out for yourself. I honestly do hope you like it, it has no viruses, its very stable, it just has a steep, steep learning curve.
Mac OS, on the other hand is not free. Try googling OSX86, try it out, and if you like it, get yourself a Mac, because it is difficult to update OSX86.
I'm loving my iMac. Many times I forget that I've had it running for over 30 days without a reboot which is a testament to its stability.
Well it's an Acer 5610z with a Pentium Dual Core @1.6 Ghz with 1 gig of ram and an Intel chip set for multimedia graphics and comes preloaded with a lot of troublesome Acer Software.
A clean installation of Vista may help you out there. Your hardware does sound a little dated, but not too bad overall. I think you may be better off with XP SP3.
Thanks Hotrod I appreciate the suggest and must say this Darn, I didn't want to do that but it's a good idea at this point Well I get to work on my machine.
AJR, The easiest / cheapest solution is to try buying some more RAM. 2 gigs will do wonders for Vista, especially on a notebook with what is likely a 5400rpm drive.
Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
