HP Mini 1000 now supporting 3G
When we got comfy with the HP Mini 1000 last month, there was talk of a full 3G spec'd version coming in December. Lo and behold we're not even out of November yet and one owner has managed to get online with his brand spankin' new 1000. User dplxy over at the Pocketables forum put in some quality time with customer support from both HP and AT&T to figure out how, saving you some minutes by describing the how-to. Full instructions are at the read link, but the gist of it is you need to download a WWAN driver from HP, manually extract and install it, and then slot your SIM card into the battery compartment. Speeds are reported to be solid but, with the lowly three cell battery struggling to keep the thing broadcasting, you'd better hurry up and find what you're looking for. It's unlikely this will work with older versions of the Mini 1000, which are believed to lack the hardware internals, but give it a shot and let us know what you find, yeah?

Niiiiiiiiiice
It really would be nice if more high end netbooks gave you built in broadband wireless and accepted SIM cards like this.
AT&T is the devil!
@Flashpoint
I'll just stick with tethering, it gets around having to have built in hardware so I can use my phone with almost any mobile @ 3G speeds.
im definately getting one, but im gonna wait until Windows 7, 12in screen, wireless N, 32 gb SSD and Dual Core Atom. (These should all be out by this time next year tho).
Sure you don't want to wait for the fuel cell version as well ?
It could be the case of my Dell Latitude D430 where there is the in built aerial (and therefore sim card slot), but no modem.
Maybe if you shoved a 3g mini pci-e card an older one it could work....
I think it's odd you can see the reflection of the storage part of the chip on the inside of the computer...
If that's the battery compartment, can't imagine the card as depicted is fully inserted. It would have to be pushed in further to get the battery back in. I don't own it, so pure speculation...
Now if we had that thing in the outside for easy add and remove (but I don't mind turning of my computer for the time mean.)
Does anybody else not feel a bit annoyed at the fact that HP have released two versions of the same netbook within a month, and those that bought the original mini 1000 are now screwed if they want internal 3G? Will HP be offering an additional internal add-on you can install yourself, if the mini 1000 you bought doesn't have it built-in? I haven't bought a mini 1000 myself, but I can emphasise with those who have, and will be left out of all the 3G goodness.
This is one feature the MacBook Air should have had from the start for it to be truly wireless and further distinguish it from the other MacBooks. I seem to remember Jobs saying something about a hockey puck and skating to where it will be? Other companies are there with their sticks first this time.
BTW incase the Macfanbois moderate me down, I am a Mac myself.
I agree, but extend the comment to netbooks in general. It seems that that's its only now that finally the ducks in the a nice row and the tech is actually getting out the door: the Aspire One had the 3G modem slot from day one, but it's only since a couple of weeks ago that a few models are actually being shipped with the connectivity. Took that long for the telcos to get on board? FCC woes? Who knows.
Wow! Time to buy the HP mini. Had read that EeePC 901 will have 3G, but 2 months have passed......
Moving the SIM from my phone to the laptop is annoying. Paying $30/month for 3G data for my iPhone and another $30/month for data for my Netbook (Theoretically, I don't own a netbook) is at least equally annoying.
do they have to know that you move the sim card into your laptop?
for the 3g to work, all you have to do is put ur sim into the device and that's it, you don't have to get another data plan if you already have it for ur iphone or smart phone, it is against your terms with at@t but as long as you dont download a 100MB file or use limewire you will be fine, there network tools keep an eye out for people that use it this way, ur iphone or smart phone wont go throw 50MB in a day like a laptop would. so go ahead a use it just don't go over board.
Does one need to pay an additional fee for this? Or could you simply put the 3G SIM card from your phone into the computer and it works? That'd be something...

it does work that way. if you have a 3g data plan you can just swap the sim into any device. it's against the terms of your contract i'm sure to use it in a computer though :D
This 3G option will free you from those laptop card or usb plug from sticking out. As far as data is concern, You will probably need additional account with another SIM card.

3G should be standard in American laptops by now.
