Fujitsu-Siemens offers Lifebook4Life laptop replacement warranty, has some land in Florida it would like to sell you

Fujistu-Siemens in the UK has recently announced their Lifebooks4Life program, which at first sounds a bit like some sort of gang tattoo, but turns out to be a new program that entitles you to a new laptop of the same value (adjusted 10 percent for inflation) every three years for the rest of your life. Granted, you'll be obliged to purchase a three year warranty with each new machine, and the machine must remain in warranty (you know what that means -- no cheap, off-brand RAM upgrades and absolutely no mods). But still -- a new notebook every three years for the price of a warranty? This doesn't sound like a disaster waiting to happen. Not at all. And one more caveat: you can't pass this contract on to your next of kin. Those of you in high-risk professions -- Dare Devils, Soldiers of Fortune, and contributing editors at Engadget -- might want to pass this one up.

Do you get to keep the older 'tops? Sweet deal.
Chizzed @ Nov 28th 2008 1:40PM
Haha that sounds sorta fun.
I think I'd rather join the wine of the month club though...and just get wasty every few days

is there a penalty for quitting the program when your midlife crisis hits and you switch to mac?
Patriks7 @ Nov 28th 2008 1:53PM
There is a penalty when you quit Crysis in the middle of it...

"and the machine must remain in warranty (you know what that means -- no cheap, off-brand RAM upgrades and absolutely no mods)."
No, no no no! That is not the way warranties work.
Any damage caused by your modifications/add-ons wont be covered, but I believe the emphasis would be on the manufacturer to prove you caused the damage. Unless they've written something into the contract.

Sorry Ed, but they did indeed write something into the contract:
Clause 6
Only original Fujitsu Siemens accessories and upgrades should be installed during the period of ownership. The original Lifebook must be returned, in good working original order, with no damage or faults to the address provided in the claim pack sent to successful applicants. Returned Lifebooks will be examined before a replacement is issued.
willj778 @ Nov 28th 2008 4:50PM
They well just do what all Laptop Manufacturers do and replace the wet sticker and cite "water damage".
Phoenix @ Nov 29th 2008 6:56AM
Nono, they are examining it to make sure you have not added ANYTHING. They look at the insides and make sure nothing you haven't bought from them is in there.
I suspect that if you buy some RAM from them, telling them it's for that PC (or send it to them to be upgraded) that'll be OK, but nothing else.

Ed = right - magnusson moss warranty act.
in other news. Fujitsu Siemons now looking for hitmen.
mexisme @ Nov 28th 2008 2:08PM
the bit i noticed was this "Under this programme, should you purchase any notebook from our LIFEBOOK range you will be eligible to receive a brand new LIFEBOOK of like for like specifications every 3 years for the rest of your LIFE!" my thought is if for example u got a dual core 1.8ghz laptop that they would only give you a dual core 1.8ghz 15 years down the line those cunning fellos and there decieving words.
Crazylink @ Nov 28th 2008 5:34PM
That's not how I think it works.
You buy a $1000 notebook now, you get a $1000 notebook next time.
Daniel @ Nov 28th 2008 2:17PM
They have those at Long Island Walmart
LonnieDvD @ Nov 28th 2008 5:36PM
I can't even upgrade the RAM on the laptop? Bah, screw this deal then!!
Ice2097 @ Nov 28th 2008 5:37PM
Only valid in the UK it seems... too bad.
DaveG @ Nov 28th 2008 10:10PM
yep, too bad.

LifeBooks 4 Life? So this line of notebooks is perfect for furthering one's anti-abortion agenda.
