HP Mini 1000 to get $40 price cut
What's this? A $40 price cut on an item that's likely on at least one gift list that you're currently staring at? Huzzah! Unless, of course, you're one of those proactive individuals who went out and already nabbed one. In all seriousness, Laptoping has reportedly received an email notification from Hewlett-Packard that the sleek and sexy Mini 1000 netbook will stoop to $359.99 starting tomorrow. That'll net you a 10-inch panel, Atom N270 CPU (1.6GHz), 1GB of RAM, an 8GB SSD, 3-cell battery and Windows XP Home. There's no word on whether the stylish Vivienne Tam Edition will receive a drop of her own, but we wouldn't count on it (yet).

Ah, there's nothing better than the falling price of mediocrity...
I was thinking about getting a netbook but I ended up buying a refurbished Dell D410 for $200. Has a 12" screen and a cpu that is more powerful than any of these netbooks.
Screen still crippled for AutoCAD...
Dear god why would you try to run AutoCAD on a netbook?
Commenter mentally crippled for thinking.
In my opinion, one of the best netbooks out there, along with the Aspire One.
The only downside is the annoying sideways trackpad buttons.
Only downside?
Bigger downside is the craptacular hard drive. 1.8" what were you thinking hp?
Yeah HP! Gosh!
I confess to liking the funny button placement. Left-clicking was very natural to me, although right-clicking I would have to move my hand, which is also a good thing, since it would reduce accidental right-clicks. Either leave your thumb on the left button and move with the index, or if that is uncomfortable move with the middle and click with the index.
What is holding me back isn't the specs at all, it's the fact that even though I want one, I definitely don't need it.
Id tap that
On the bright side, it has a good keyboard.
8GB SSD?
That is just enough to hold the OS and iTunes and a small media collection so that the user can sync an iPhone on the go!
Yeah and it even has bluetooth so you dont need to carry around that stupid unstandardized cable around everywhere with you...oh wait nvm.
CAPTAIN, DOWNRANKING INCOMING
Arrr, batton down ye hatches!
CAPTAIN IT WONT HELP
Do it, aye say!
SHE'S TAKING ON WATER, CAP'N!
This sturdy old girl can take it! Get to ye duties, cowardly dogs!
lol at my grammar.
if your gonna comment in french, make the entire thing french, not just one word
All I want for Christmas is the painful drawn out deaths of engadget trolls.
Ignore him. He's still traumatized from finding naked pictures of himself on his Dad's Apple II...
@Starvine
lol- Genius, but wouldn't it make more sense if it was a PC of some kind? It would all make sense then...
And I thought we would last at least one post before iEye brought up the iPhone..... What a fool I was....
@ who:
Not really; iEye loves his dad, and they bond over their shared love of steve jobs regularly.
@CJ
ah
I'm currently in the market for a Netbook. I still base everything on my desktop, but I just want to have something with me when I'm away. But with Asus, Acer, Dell Mini, HP, Samsung, etc. which one do I pick? I'd like to have a big hard drive, ~160gig, a web cam, and battery life is not most important to me. Any personal opinions out there?
I would seriously look at either the aspire one or the hp mini note 2133, my gf has the mini note and it has a rather large hard drive, an ample amount of ram (2 gb), the best keyboard of any netbook that I have used, and one of the highest resolution screens.
The only downside is that it comes with vista, but I just formatted it and put xp on it and it runs pretty damn snappy.
Doesn't it have a 10.2 inch screen, not 8.9?
the 10.2 is an option. the $399 ($359) price is for the 8.9
I just bought one last Sunday. Excellent netbook. I got the 10.2in screen with the 16GB SSD.
horrible left and right click buttons , other than that, its about time it matched the aspire one, which they sell at walmart now
Nice catch!
The Aspire One is a much better deal.
It has a bigger faster hard drive, smaller package with the same screen, and a bigger battery if you buy the $399 version.
To be honest, ever since I discovered the synaptics touchpad on my Compaq (I know, I know) have user-programmable tap-to-click areas, I no longer even use the mouse buttons for right click. (Each corner can be assigned to do a different mouse duty; right click, double click, forward/backward one page, etc.)
When are the dual core atoms coming?
I wonder if this price change will affect the launch price of the version with MIE
I saw a netbook with a 120GB HHD, 1GB RAM, and it was about $350....
I guess some people really go crazy for the SSD's...
The only thing that stopped me from getting this was the screen resolution. I so wished they kept the WXGA from the previous one and I would have been totally happy. I got a Macbook instead, although a netbook (with WXGA) would have been enough for my needs. Oh well. So close, yet so far.
I keep getting the itch to buy a netbook, but the fact that my 5 year old Fujitsu lifebook is really no worse than any netbook on the market (and a similar form factor) keeps me from pulling the trigger.
Plus I'm really cheap...
even with the 40% black friday deal on hp, it was more expensive than what i'd like it to be.
I picked up a Sammy NC10 for 320 on Black Friday, better battery and similar in all other respects. I am satisfied.
I got to see this at my local Microcenter and it is one of the if not the best looking netbooks I have ever seen, very nice design in my opinion. Damn shame they axed the Expresscard slot from the 2133 model and 1280x768 resolution. Too bad it also uses a 1.8" HDD or tiny SSD.
Damn it HP, you had to intentionally cripple some parts of this netbook to not have it rise above the rest!!!
I like the Samsung NC10. It has the most balance of features, power and price.
I personally own one of these. I have the 10.1" screen and the 60GB HD instead of the SSD. In my opinion, this little one feels very solid as compared to other netbooks I got my hands on. The webcam is a plus also as I use this to communicate with family from out of country. Its size is perfect, smaller than my college books. It could be a tad more powerful, and it came with a load of bloatwares. I had to do a clean install with XP and gonna be trying SUSE on it just to see. This little bugger is only 4 days old for me so I wonder if I can get a price change for the difference being that the original price dropped within the week of me purchasing it. I wish I waited to give their MIE a try. It looks promising.
The best netbook is MSI Wind. I have the white one. 2 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard-Drive, 10-inch screen, wi-fi, bluetooth, webcam, Windows XP... Great little machine.
I'm in agreement with you, but the sub-par touchpad is a deal breaker for me.
For just $660 more you can get a REAL computer.
Wow! Or I could get 3 of these...
Which would you have? Three HP netbooks or one Mac that you'll replace next year when Jobs announces a new one?
just 660 dollars more?
THATS A STEAL!
Meanwhile, the HP Compaq Mini 700 is due in "mid-December" in Europe and still doesn't seem to exist outside of HP's pres release. What's the story?
Who the FUCK buys someone a laptop for an xmas present?
I mean apart from the uber rich, thats not normal. Sorry engadget.
Sorry Luke, make up a large chunk of that number I'll bet.
Sorry Luke.
Woah, my comment got chopped up when getting posted!
Luke, I'll bet laptops make up a sizable amount of Christmas presents and this year, netbooks will make up a good chunk of that number.
Um.... Me.
Come on 6-Cell model. That's the only thing that will make me purchase this, if that feature arrives before the Samsung NC10 arrives in Canada.
Best Buy just lowered the one they sell from $450 to $400, you get the 10.2" led screen and 16GB of SSD storage, pretty good deal imo

I'm so mad that I bought an Eee Pc Surf back in may! Ugh, I hate my impatience now!
Well that was seven months ago, which is an eternity in laptop years. I know if I buy a laptop now, in seven months I will be very jealous of the lowered prices and new hardware the future notebooks will have. I can give myself a bit of solace knowing that I enjoyed my laptop for seven months beforehand.
why go w/ this? It only has a 3 cell battery, hardly useful for travel, which is what i assume most netbooks are geared toward.
I just got an Asus Eee 900HA, and my friend got the 1000HA. They both seem to be much better deals compared to this, so I just don't see how this is an attractive netbook option for the mobile traveler.
With this price cut, I'm very temped in buying this thing..
I was googling around and found some information on a possible 3g device preinstalled on the hp mini 1000. jkOnTheRun has stated that it might just be a Europe thing as their shipping with 3g contracts perhaps? However, I am US and my mini does have the available slot for sim and I have successfully installed the device. I do not have subscription to data service but it is promising.
