Rumored Intel roadmap names next Atom "Medfield"

Rumors are swirling about Intel's roadmap of forthcoming netbook and handheld processors, which apparently showed up in a recent report by UBS. The roadmap seems to confirm the previously seen Pineview, and codenames its successor "Medfield," which is to be built on 32-nanometer process technology. Pineview, after some speculation, seems to have been nailed down as a 45-nanometer chip, and will be released in 2009, while Medfield, a complete system-on-chip, will follow in 2010. Medfield will have two variants, one for netbooks rumored to use the current integrated GPU, and one for MIDs, which is said to carry a PowerVR graphics core like the one used in the iPhone. Intel has apparently confirmed the codename "Medfield," but, when questioned, wouldn't answer to allegations that the person who'd come up with the moniker had been fired on grounds of being the least creative namer in the history of naming.

Not as bad as ubuntus naming scheme Horny Hippo and Floppy Donkey Dick. Will this be the first 32 NM or will that fall to Core I7
People think that's funny?
Forgive Gad Get. He just needs to get his head out of his arse.
I think the Ubuntu versions you were referring to were Goatse Gibbon, Hairy Hardon, and IncredI buttseks.
I live in Medfield! Maybe Intel will give everyone in town a free processor.
Looking forward to the next Intel chip called Chernobyl then.
If it's dual-core I'll buy it. Need to run a low power server, but still be able to multitask.
Uh, yeah, because multitasking wasn't possible and never existed before multi-core processors. . .
Atom is slow... take a look at a Mini-ITX board with a Core 2 ULV.. those go down to ~5 watts..
Yes, it will play Crysis.
At 300FPS.
Well done.
and it will play Doom (yes, all of them), will play lemmings and will blend.
Alas, Intel requires it's codenames to be the name of some place on a map. I doubt they will ever use "Intercourse" (PA) in the future though....
I wouldn't be surprised if there was a special edition called Cupertino that will be only available for Stevie..
Do parks/historic points count? Because if Intercourse doesn't make it, maybe Dickson Mounds (IL) will.
This is true. From what I gathered as an intern at Intel, all code names are things on a map. In fact every year there is someone (maybe a group) that reviews the names and adds them to a list. When a project manager is given a new project, they choose a name off the list. So if a name occurs on a map, then it can be used. Codename 'Uranus' anyone?

So, there'll never be an Intel chip called Iraq or Afghanistan ...any bets on Iran?
Interesting, but the Atom CPU isn't even close to the most power hungry component on the netbooks. More performance per watt, great!, but they really need to make a better chipset than their current 945GME. That silicon chugs out 11watts+, alone, while the Atom 230 uses a mere 3watts. In comparison the AMD 780G chipset, with R660 HD3200 core which allows for some very nice graphics, uses 0.9 watts on idle, and a max of 10 or 11 watts itself.
Intel really needs to step up their game in the chipset market if people want 10hours+ batt life on 6 cell batteries!
both of the next-gen atoms use a new shrunken chipset
Isnt that what poulsbo is for??
Rumored Microsoft roadmap names next lightweight OS "Seinfeld"
pictured chip is "82802AB/82802AC Firmware Hub (FWH)"
I don't know what that is, but I now have a datasheet for it.
welcome to the infomation age
It held the bios in circa 1998 pentium 2 mainboards....
I was sort of wondering about the choice of pictures myself.
the mitch hedberg naming institute: you just add an "er" sound to whatever it does
.
what's that do? it freezes things. well thats a freezer.
what's that do? it processes. well thats a processor. i'm going on break.
I would very much love to get a hold of an Atom SOC dev board...
