Xbox 360 modder adds 7-inch LCD to chassis for reasons unknown
One could argue that adding an LCD monitor into the casing of an Xbox 360 would certainly make it a more viable gaming solution on-the-go, but given just how many cables are still connected here, we're wondering if it's not worth the extra effort to lug around a decent sized LCD. 'Course, we certainly commend the effort here -- though it's not entirely original or anything -- and we can't deny that it took some serious blood, sweat and lost Halo 3 time to fix it up. To that end, we present to you an emphatic golf clap and a recommendation to hit up the read link for a short demonstration vid.

I don't know what I should be disgusted more about: The tiny screen, the low res image, or the ugly looking speakers?
Ryan Trevisol @ Dec 8th 2008 10:18AM
You forgot the crooked-looking installation of the lcd.
OneLove @ Dec 8th 2008 11:32AM
I was about to mention that. (A for effort)
Peter @ Dec 8th 2008 4:06PM
I used to have those speakers, I trashed them; 2.5 total wattage is too low for me.
Zunavio @ Dec 8th 2008 9:59AM
The speaker supposed to be inside too, except the controller.
y3k.nik @ Dec 8th 2008 10:00AM
The console is not made for on the go gaming!
I cant plug a 360 in a car or an airplane and start playing.
Kris120890 @ Dec 8th 2008 10:02AM
Did he Void his warranty?. Must have got RROD or why would you do it. Saying that not 10 minutes ago UPS just collected my 360 2 Hours after the latest time I gave them. I miss it already.
I feel so emotional and lost without it. I'll be weeping in the corner.
Alex Padilla @ Dec 8th 2008 10:02AM
At least he lost precious Halo 3 time and not CoD4 time instead. Now THAT would've been a tragedy.
teej @ Dec 8th 2008 4:45PM
you must mean World at War time because, in the COD franchise, you have to switch every year.
John H. @ Dec 8th 2008 10:03AM
I was about to say it'd be good for road trips, but my power converter that I plug into the cigarette lighter outlet nearly asploded when I plugged the beast that is my 360 Elite into it.
zioncat @ Dec 8th 2008 10:03AM
Wow this has to be one of the most ridiculous mods yet. Come on why bother, anyway all microsoft does is observe what people are doing stealing ideas for the very next xbox.
Kris120890 @ Dec 8th 2008 10:15AM
They are ahead of Sony. There is a 80% chance that the Xbox 720 and LIVE anywhere will be discussed at E3.
absinthe party @ Dec 8th 2008 10:19AM
@ Kris120890
I can live anywhere now, and I don't have to wait for E3. It's an advantage of being single. Does that put me ahead of Microsoft?
Kris120890 @ Dec 8th 2008 10:29AM
No that makes you unable to read the sentence in context.
Vianon @ Dec 8th 2008 10:38AM
Thumbs up for you both, because this discussion is just plain funny!
absinthe party @ Dec 8th 2008 10:43AM
Meh. I was just trying to be punny, Serious Sam. I guess I'll cut it out.

couchpundit @ Dec 8th 2008 10:13AM
Slow news day, guys?
I put this mod in the same category as a 1997 Civic covered in primer and Bondo with superfluous TV screen near the driver and a spoiler hand-made at the junior college metal shop class.
It's just shy of mediocrity.
Vianon @ Dec 8th 2008 10:20AM
If Ben Heck was dead, he would roll in his grave right now...
y3k.nik @ Dec 8th 2008 10:31AM
And then we could mod Ben Heck to give the world electricity, by hooking him up to a motor!
LMM @ Dec 8th 2008 10:42AM
And then do what people thought was impossible...
Ben Heck in a laptop!
Vianon @ Dec 8th 2008 10:43AM
How very disturbing...
absinthe party @ Dec 8th 2008 10:48AM
Slot-loading cd drive?
Whaaambulance @ Dec 8th 2008 11:52AM
Yeah, this is totally lame compared to how Heck turned a 360 into a device that will surely spark a portable gaming revolution. Ben took what is basically a computer and broke it down into something that would fit on your lap. We could call them LAPTOPS! Only instead of just playing games they could do other stuff too... Oh wait, turns out someone had this idea over 30 years ago.
It's a mod, stop flaming the guy.
dagamer34 @ Dec 8th 2008 10:27AM
Isn't he going to have to worry about heat affecting the screen?
Josh @ Dec 8th 2008 12:03PM
or the extra heat from the LCD affecting the 360...
rawd @ Dec 8th 2008 10:53AM
I didn't think it was possible to make that POS even uglier
Sammy @ Dec 8th 2008 11:38AM
Your Other "Viable" options have gone out of Business back in Oct 26, 2006 the Joytech is no longer available.
AMiSH PiRATE @ Dec 8th 2008 11:43AM
I'm reminded of the time I duct taped an NES to a portable TV.
lyris2003 @ Dec 8th 2008 12:05PM
When that console inevitably red-rings, he's not gonna be too pleased!
Blastar @ Dec 8th 2008 12:08PM
Why not the XBox inside a TV ?
Whoooaaa !!
That's would be so awesome right ?.
I am just discussed with all these mod/hacks.. they have disgrace the World "Hacking" some Years now by adding it into what ever modification they made and now what they just add an LCD in to another device but cutting the Plastic and connecting the wires and they publish it on the web ???
Does it really worth publishing ? Further more.. DOES IT WORTH BEING ON THEY ENGADGET NEWS ??
Yes Damn, I am Talking to the Writers.
What else can I say.. I rest my Case.
Das Gluten @ Dec 8th 2008 4:51PM
Why not comment if you're gonna be a douchebag?
Whoooaaa !!
That's would be so awesome right ?. (
Anthony @ Dec 8th 2008 12:11PM
Oh come on guys... Aside from everything, how much of you can honestly say you can do a better job?? Give this guy some credit for atleast trying.
Volker @ Dec 8th 2008 12:14PM
Totally worthless.
mbernier @ Dec 8th 2008 12:33PM
It doubles as an egg fryer too. Think: 360 runs hot, add an LCD with vents INSIDE the box...holy cow, I'm surprised it isn't melting in that picture.
Trevor @ Dec 8th 2008 12:37PM
why doesnt someone mod a HD tv with a xbox or a tv and accutally make a decent mod
Jose @ Dec 8th 2008 12:42PM
He must have gotten it for cheap off of this auction: http://cgi.ebay.es/Xbox-360-20GB-HD-Premium-Game-Console-System-Pro-Refurb_W0QQitemZ180311353781QQcmdZViewItemQQptZVideo_Games?hash=item180311353781&_trksid=p3911.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A895|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318
David @ Dec 8th 2008 1:05PM
when the RROD comes does the screen say FAIL?
callused @ Dec 8th 2008 1:11PM
Please for the love of Christ don't tell me that cable running from the AV port is running back into the console for the screen... Please...
Andy @ Dec 8th 2008 1:25PM
Couldn't he have take a high resolution pic? What is that 640X480?
lee @ Dec 8th 2008 2:35PM
Just what the XBox needs somethign to generate more heat. This mod is going to PROD for sure, good luck with that
cmay227 @ Jan 2nd 2009 3:53PM
had for over a yr and still works great. the vid was from you tube. see the original their and was done to see if i could do it. If you don't like it make a better one. this was posted back in may the xbox has changed alot. including everything is now internal including the speakers.
ipKonfig @ Dec 8th 2008 2:38PM
It looks like that LCD is connected through the normal component cables, and is that the power cord going through a hole under the LCD? How can this even be considered a mod.
Bandit5317 @ Dec 8th 2008 4:40PM
Good job aesthetically, but he could've done better when it came to the wiring. This mod can be done for less than $40 if you'll settle for a 5" screen. You can grab the composite video signal (or any other video signal) by soldering to the bottom of the A/V connector on the motherboard. You can use the innards of a PSone car power adapter to convert a 12v power source from the 360s motherboard into the 7.5 the LCD needs. Then you just need to wire up a slide switch running to pins 22 and 24 on the bottom of the A/V connector to tell the 360 to output the composite video signal when you close the circuit. That way, the only thing you would need hooked up to the 360 to use it would be the power and the entire mod would be internal. You can even hook up the stereo speakers that come with the LCD with a little extra wiring. That's not much of a tutorial, but a little searching should lead you to any pinouts which you may need to connect the dots. Anyways, here's one I built a while back (ninth from top):

Jeff @ Dec 8th 2008 7:37PM
I like pointless mods, but this could have used a little more planning. I'm sure he could have hacked up the speakers and stuck them inside the system, and rerouted the wires to do the same.
I like the wood paneling on the hdd, though :D
ikebana @ Dec 12th 2008 7:19AM
This is disgusting man. The screen size is too small and the dislpay is not HD. The XBox is meant to be enjoyed on large HD screens not to deteriorate its style this way.
