Toshiba goes bonkers with Qosmio laptop upgrades: GX, FX and SpursEngine G50
Hang tight, kiddos -- Toshiba's about to take you on a wild, unpredictable ride through the untamed wilderness where Qosmios are born. The outfit has just unleashed some 20 new Dynabook models over in Japan, with the most notable additions coming in the gamer-oriented Qosmio FX (15.4-inch) and GX (18.4-inch) and the SpursEngine-equipped G50 (18.4-inch). The GX / FX models boast a 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo P8600 CPU, NVIDIA's GeForce 9600M GT, 4GB of RAM and a 320GB hard drive. As for the G50, you'll find most of the same specs, though the inclusion of a SpursEngine graphics system, an extra 250GB hard drive, a digital TV tuner, four USB ports, an eSATA socket, 1.3-megapixel camera, a fingerprint sensor and a dual-layer DVD burner makes it a touch more special. As for pricing on these three, expect 'em to cost between ¥210,000 ($2,327) and ¥340,000 ($3,767), and we're told the whole family will be available before the year's end.

Finally, exactly what I am looking for!
Something tells me that you're compensating.
Good! Then I can finally ask a target customer something which has puzzled me for a long time. If you're looking at the 18.4" monster, do you realize that it is just about the least portable thing in the world, right? And if it is going to be just sitting on your desk, do you know that you could either build or buy a desktop with superior respects in every regard? So I would really like to know what is the rationale for buying a "portable" computer which isn't portable at all when you could get all the benefits for much cheaper.
Desktop = stuck in one place
Laptop = surf and game wherever you want to in the house.
@DBrim,
Seth has a very good point. I also move quite a bit, and travel a lot to places where I will be for a couple of months at a time, so a laptop with desktop capabilities is important for me. It is also important to me to have a full size keyboard. It is nice to be able to pick up and move without paying to ship a truckload of stuff with me. I can simply throw this computer into my checked baggage if I pack it right. I can't do that with a desktop without using up almost an entire suitcase.
but we've got the biggest balls of them all.
@Seth
Come on, be real. That brick ain't going anywhere. So, what, you're going to lug your brick of a "laptop" along with your computer speaker system, mouse and power brick over to the couch to do some gaming? Yeah, right. At most you could bring the laptop by itself to the couch to do some web surfing but with the savings you'd get from building your own desktop gaming rig, you could buy an extra small laptop just for surfing on the couch.
@Tonicboy: come on, I own brick bigger and heavier than that, at 7.05kg and 20.1 inch, yet, it is still movable to my lap when I need it to. I still use it in preference of my lighter notebook.
You don't need to lug speakers around... The power brick is on the floor next to my couch. It's nice to use the laptop upstairs or on the couch.
Why in the world would you shoot a press image with a corded mouse? It's a good thing these laptops are spec'd to the max because they're ugly as sin.
Maybe because it comes with a mouse?
lol these things are only laptops by name...You ever seen a 17 or 18.4 inch Qosmio in person? they're like large floor tiles
I wont put any Qosmio on my lap, unless I want to be sterilized AND paralyzed!
The new ads:
Camera switches to sterile paraplegic with 2nd degree burns playing Crisis
"Thanks Qosmio!"
Steveorevo here again, ready to point out what crap the Tooshitty line of Quasimottos are. Powersupply fires, overheating, horrible outsourced warranty through ServiceNET, and many, many system reoccurring system board failures, dead fans, etc. etc. I've had four of them, and each one sucked.
Remember folks choose anyone, anything, but a Tooshitty Quasimotto, even their Satellite line is waaaayyy better.
Never had problems with DELL, HP, Voodoo, SONY, Asus, Lenovo, etc. etc.
Do these things come with the awesome flames on the back the old Qosmio's did?
Is there really money to be made in this insanely priced too big to be a laptop but not as powerful as a desktop computer market?
If you travel alot, it can be worth it. I still have my old XPS M1710 laptop, cost me around the same 3,000$ price as these laptops back in 2006, but it still holds its own in most every game I play.
And its super easy to just pack it all up into a backpack whenever I'm moving somewhere new or traveling in general.
Sure I'm never exactly going to play it on one knee or win any rewards for battery life, but still it's pretty convenient.
"If you travel alot, it can be worth it."
Are we looking at the same, hideously travel-UNFRIENDLY laptop right now?!
Well maybe I should clarify a bit... If I'm traveling I'm not gonna whip my laptop out on the airplane or while sitting in the terminal. But like while staying in verious hotels, etc..
In those situations I like having the option to just set up shop wherever, which is something I couldn't do with a desktop.
Although admittedly, I'm a gaming junkie... so while I'm sure plenty of people are content to browse the net or surfing youtube while traveling, I enjoy having the capability to play whatever new first-person shooter/online game I want regardless of where I happen to be with no real loss in performance.
@Period.Man
Let me get this right. You travel for work I would assume, so I am guessing you have a separate laptop for work. And you actually travel with BOTH of these laptops just so you can get a little gaming on in your hotel room? Have you ever heard of a PSP?
You've seen a Qosmio laptop once, you're seen the epitome of ridiculous a thous... Hey! this one actually looks civil! I've never been a fan of the Qosmios i see hanging around at best buy, but judging py the picture, this one looks a little more subtle...so to speak.
For a $2000+ 'gamers' laptop, you would want a hell of a lot better than a 9600M GT.
Yeah that's what I was thinking.... haven't they got us past that level yet?
The other G55s on the market currently have a 9700GT, a fair bit faster, so I'm not sure what this is all about.
These days we have new laptops coming in everyday.. I am bored!
For that price I would expect a bag of hurt drive in there.
Too bad Toshiba builds laptops that break down really easy. Go with something else.
I've owned three Toshiba laptops in the past decade. My oldest laptop (which I got from my mother second-hand and was four years old) worked beautifully for four years before its power supply and motherboard finally crapped out. The second, which I bought in 2003, is still around gathering dust in its retirement; save for the cooling system breaking down last year (which I was able to replace), it did good work. The current Toshiba, six months old, is in great shape.
Meanwhile I have also owned an Acer and two Compaqs in that time. The Acer is still around, but performed like crap before I modded it up (and replaced the cracked LCD). One of my Compaqs was in and out of the shop or getting fixed on a constant basis; the other still runs nicely for an XP machine.
Most of the problems people have with computers have to do with mistreating the hell out of them; I've broken a couple of LCD screens myself over time due to carelessness. Other times, as in the case of the Compaq's (and most recently, with my fiancee's Dell craptop), the laptops have been problem children right off the factory floor. But the Toshibas I've owned have served me fine. And chances are, most brands (save for Acer and Dell) are of good quality.
Methinks Edward that you may be unlucky -- or careless. Or both.
Qosmio, ugliest laptop ever. I don't care how powerful it is. Gimmie a high end ASUS anyday. At least their "Gaming Notebooks" still look like a notebook and not a desktop turned on it's side with a keyboard and lcd attached.
What good is portability if you need a friend to help you move the thing?
over the years, toshiba laptop gotten worse, I've switched to HP. As of this laptop, what a rip-off. And no blu-ray for this so-called entertainment laptop (I could still understand if it the laptop made for portability)? this computer is no-sell for me. even with HD DVD. I set BD as my standard since early 2007. even HP HDX (whether it's HDX9000 20.1 inch or HDX18 18.4) are still cheaper.
Large laptops may be bulky but they are necissary for some. I am practically blind and for me to attend school, I need a portable yet large computer to store my notes. I would kill a forest if I wrote on paper due to the size I would need to write so that I could see it.
For me, this computer is perfect.
