Dell Studio XPS 13 leather-wrapped laptop revealed, Adamo info leaked!
Thanks to a totally amazing Engadget source, we've gotten our hands on photos of the absolutely sick Dell Studio XPS 13, and some new info about the company's forthcoming Adamo. First off, the photos in the gallery are of that Studio XPS we caught wind of way back in August. The pics we saw back then don't really do the laptop justice, as you can tell by these snaps. Meanwhile, that rumored Adamo is very much real, and very much like what we've been hearing. Apparently the device -- which the company plans to market as the "world's thinnest laptop" -- was slated to be released this month, but has been pushed back till at least February. The Adamo will sport a black and silver color scheme similar to the system you see here, but is "different," and we're told that it's most definitely Dell's play to nab some of that MacBook Air marketshare. We're working on some photos of that, but until those come through, enjoy the gallery below!

I didn't realize the MBA had a market share....
It does if your an engadget editor.
MacBook Air market share is a bag of hurt.
Exactly. To Engadget, the Macbook Air has significant market share worth going after, which we all know is ludicrous.
Though, there are still lots of speculation and fuzzy details about the Adamo, my take is that Dell wants to re-invente/revive their image and brand with this "flagship" laptop, much like Toyota releasing a super-car.
@ WickedEast
If mac led Dell to revive their brand into flagship products then props to apple, and props to dell. Although, if anything, mac showed dell and hp that consumers could be bought simply on looks rather than technicalities.
**Correction: I need some sleep because I apparently cannot read. Meh . .
its slice of the market share pie is about as thin as it is
Wowza! Looks almost too good.
I can finally upgrade my XPS m1210.
Well I'm guessing somewhere in the world out there, there is.. I go to highschool and there are I think 7 people with one.. And we're not a big highschool either! Not even over 250 people, out of which maybe 10% bring their own laptop to school, 7 being the MBA..
If this Dell laptop that is trying to beat the MBA and can support a dvd drive and is just as thin and cool.
No matter what already wins!
Who wants that thin of a computer if you can't even watch a dvd in a plane or doing any type of travel.
Watch a divx.
Dell just make it at least 2 USB.
You guys are absurd - way to miss the whole point of the article and concentrate on the smallest reason to call Engadget apple fanboys. It doesn't even matter if you're right or not - you're just wasting comment space.
To all you trolls who keep harping on the Engadget loves Apple thing - give it up already. We get your point, move on. You're wasting space and ruining posts by your childish rants. Despite the fact that I would never, ever buy a Mac I think you're wrong on this whole issue, but even if I didn't your whining is getting OLD.
What is the difference in it being leather wrapped? It's still the same old crappy dell.
Remember the Cadillac Cimarron wit Landau roof?
I think it looks pretty decent, although they're getting awfully close to a chiclet keyboard, which I find repulsive.
Excited to see what this Adamo looks like!
Thank you, Mr Weiner. Until your incisive post I had no idea that Dell only made one model of computer. Your comment has spread a little light into the long dark nightime of ignorance. For that we must thank you.
Srsly.
The XPS series are VERY good computers. The m1330 is considered by many to be the best laptop available (until now).
As an XPS 1330 owner who has had problems - I am still very, very happy with my computer. It's fast, light and fast. It gets great battery life for the amount of power available. I just put an Intel SSD in the X25-M and it's even better - completly silent.
The 1340 is meant to do two things - provide an upgrade path for the 1330 owners and convert others into perceiving the "xps/adamo" laptop brand as "premium". I hope the super slim WXGA led panel is of better quality than the last.
When the XPS 1330 was released there was no machine besides the mac book pro that could compare. Again, Dell pushes the limits and delivers a capable compact notebook with discreet FX in a nice package.
And on more thing... it has a windows key :)
Logan
I think Dell makes computers and laptops for Apple. They look very similar.
no, ikea designs apple products
16?
I think it looks like an Atari 5200.
If by similar you mean they have LCD screens, keyboards, touchpads, and fold into a more compact size when not in use -- then yes, they are very similar.
I have never been excited by a laptop's bottom before...seriously.
Never over any Dell of any sort.
does the studio xps laptop also have the Core i7?
99.999% unlikely. The Core i7 only exists in desktop form at the moment, so it would be possible, but very, very unlikely. I would imagine 8000 and 9000 series Penryns on the Centrino 2 chipset (P45's laptop equivalent)
Smaller notebooks (like 13") with Core i7 probably next summer/fall, definitely NOT this coming February :)
this should match my crocodile-wrapped cell phone
DisplayPort, HDMI, and VGA seems a bit excessive, especially on a 13 incher with only two USB ports. DisplayPort is backwards compatible with HDMI. I would have rather had an extra USB.
Having only two USB ports is a major flaw of the m1330 and now the XPS 13. Even my tiny netbook has three USB ports, and the XPS 13 seems to have a bit thicker base than the m1330.
I think it actually only has 1 USB port. The port by the CDROM appears to be powered E-SATA.
While cool to have so many different types of ports. 1 USB port is basically unacceptable.
It's USB Powershare / eSATA. On my computer the USB Powershare port and the USB / eSATA are next to each other, but on this one, they're the same port.
mind you, i find 2 usb ports on my xps 1330 enough
most of the time i don't use it, and sometimes maybe only for my external hd
USB hubs ftw.
thats a really nice laptop from Dell. if i hadnt of bought my Thinkpad T400 2 months ago i'd probably consider getting one of these. its very stylish; Dell is certainly going after Apple.
Your ThinkPad will last longer than that Dell. It's also more likely to have all the cells in its battery.
My T21 lasted almost 4 years. I have yet to have a Dell laptop that lasts more than 2...
I Would Definitely Buy THAT;)
I am definitely buying this XPS 13 !!! Been waiting for it for several months already...
What? No neon circus LED lights and clown texture designs like my current DELL designed by Michael's 13 year old son? Waahhh.... this looks much better. I'd get one, to sit right ontop of my current XPS. Great hardware, and now a better design. Still like the Apple lighted keyboard, all metal case and glass touchpad though... I'll get both!
I think the Cadilac CTS is unique car with a sense of style all it's own. There is a lot to like, but It just doesn't mesh with my own sensibilities.
I feel the same way about this laptop.
Maybe your sensibilities just suck
But you just can't argue with someone's style now, can you?
You know...there is room on the left side for the card reader instead of the front, just so it looks better in the front. Other than that, I have found my new laptop!!
Nice but kinda lazy name, they just put 2 of their already used names together.
Lesse: MacBOOK, Mac PRO, MacBOOKPRO
sound familiar?
Is it me or has Dell delayed the Adamo to conincide with the release of Windows 7? Why delay the launch from December to Febuary if not for that reason. Also remember Vista is too bloated to run on hardware similary to the Macbook Air. However Windows 7 is optimized for netbooks. Unless dell release it running Ubuntu.
Since when is Windows 7 coming out in Feburary??? Maybe of 2010....
Ok, now that is sexy.
I hope it's not priced like a Macbook Air. Priced more like $1400 or so if they want to move them.
If it's well priced I might get one for the wife. She needs a new laptop, but I'm still waiting to see how she likes the Macbook. If she likes that, I might just let her use mine and get something else, or maybe save money and use my work laptop and she gets to use the Macbook most of the time.
I am liking firewire and HDMI over the Macbook. Still waiting for someone to release a mini DP to HDMI adapter. Firewire I don't really use, but it is nice to have. Having USB ports on different sides is nice, but only 2? I still don't like that about the Macbook.
How is your wife?
i hope it is available sans-leather. I don't think i'd like that for more than 30 minutes.
Ok... HDMI is nice, VGA is still necessary, eSATA is awesome, but...
ONE USB PORT? WTF? COME ON DELL!
Oh, I see now that the eSATA is an eSATA/USB combo port.
Well still, I think I would have rather seen 2 dedicated USB and the eSATA/USB...
2 USB ports, man, 2! and for me personally that's completely enough!
How are they going to market it as the world's thinnest laptop? Clearly it's not. That hinge is fat as hell.
LTR
Read the article.... The pictures are of the XPS, not the Adamo. And it's not fat, that's just water weight.
macbook is still better
Really? So you have spent extensive hands-on time testing both of these Dell computers, comparing the weight, performance, heat output, screen quality, and general usabilty to the Mac Book and arrived at that conclusion? Could you write everything up into a comprehensive review and post it here giving a point-by-point comparison, that would be very helpful to all of us. Could you also let us in on your secrets, how you were able to get either of these new Dell laptops before they were publically released? Even though you have done extensive testing and found the Mac Book to be better, I would still like to know how I can get in on that early tester program that you are in.
This is Dell's BEST design computer so far! Let's see how Dell will tackle the MBA with Adamo. Though it will be tough for them to accomplish a thinner computer than 0.16 - 0.76 for that "World's Thinnest Laptop" title.
eh all they have to do is put an asterisk at the bottom and anything can be the worlds thinnest anything.
i.e.
*thinnest laptop claim based on the thickness of the track pad in comparison to all other track pads in the current (december 18th - december 20th) lineup.
Now this is the XPS I should have gotten instead of my current XPS m13330. eSATA/USB combo is awesome. I see that it has all the connections anyone would want. HDMI, DisplayPort AND VGA? Now we're talking.
I still like my MacBook better in terms of aesthetics, but this design is really nice and Dell should be applauded for making significant strides in improving the visual appeal of their products.
One of the most striking details to me was the bottom. Even VAIOs don't have that amount of care put into the appearance of the underside. Until now, Apple was the only company I'd ever noticed going out of their way to make the underside of the laptop look good. But Dell did it well here.
I hate, hate, hate this "semi-isolated" style of keyboard. The old VAIOs had them and they felt cheap and half-finished. They switched to the fully-isolated version and it looks and feels much better.
I agree. I hope the Studio 16 would be just as good - now that I have a eeePC I can have a heavier laptop, and a combination of leather and rumored RGB LED would be amazing - beautiful and functional.
I agree. The new Macbooks have a more professional design than this XPS 13, but the 13 has more of a luxury look to it with the leather and burgundy color.
Well, you have to realize that Apple's designs are better than pretty much anyone on this planet designs anything. They are the top of the tops. PC manufacturers have turned a blind note to this for a very long time - the design "didn't matter", basically. Then HP started to produce nice looking laptops and took over Dell as the #1 PC computer manufacturer.
Now everyone is trying to make their notebooks look nicer - I think it's mainly because notebooks are more like consumer products than traditional PCs.
It took Dell a while to get any kind of design going, and there were some hilarious mishaps along the way (which you can see every week on The Big Bang Theory). But now it looks like the big D got it right, has a design team in place that knows what they are doing. I am amazed at the underside-design - nobody has been doing this except Apple (who designed the underside of their notebooks for 10 years now, I think).
Dell has produced an outstanding design here, and is well poised to compete with the likes of Sony, HP, and other PC manufacturers. And it's probably good enough to win over some Apple customers too. While nobody can touch Apple's design this one is at least pretty enough to not completely turn people off a purchase and Dell can win on other merits. Sort of like Toyota competes very well with BMW even though they don't stand a chance when it comes to design. You don't have to be the prettiest - you just have to be pretty enough.
It does not look very good. Plus, I was at the shop today and this dad was with his daughter looking at iPods. He then goes and tells her to have a look at these sony mini-laptops and she says "is it a mac?". You can't compete with that.. I mean unless it is a mac, whether it is a car, horse, whatever.. young girls will not buy it.
Thats not Dells market. I think Apple has the market cornered on little girls and effete iBoi's. Their laptop choice has to accessorize with their lifestyle. Bouncy bubble icons and a glowing logo go a long way in that demo.
I think that unless you are sitting in Smoking lounge, drinking a fine scotch and the lighting is dark and moody, this laptop will look like you are typing on your granddads favorite chair.
sniffle sniffle...that is the most beautiful dell i have ever seen...almost as good looking as my MacBook Pro. Having a PC for most of my life, and a Mac for only the past few months, i can say that this is one brilliant PC. Now im not trying to start a Mac vs PC war, but that has got to be the best looking Dell I have ever seen
I'm not the biggest fan of the leather, it just doesn't look right on a laptop, but besides that this thing is friggen beautiful. I would love to own a laptop that sexy. I'm sure that's an LED screen too.
FFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
Questionable timing on Dell's part for this launch, with the economy favoring cheaper laptops. I grabbed the Mini 12 specifically because I didn't want to pay $1500 or more for my thin and light. Granted, there are people who need more power than Atom and integrated graphics in an ultrathin laptop...but not a ton of them, I'd imagine.
I'd love to see how it looks though...and that XPS looks pretty sexy, but again, consumers are clamoring for laptops well under the $1000 price point that thing will hit at base.
Hopefully they decide to keep it a little cheaper and offer an SSD less option....I'm just pissed that I can't get the X300 without SSD. :(
does anyone know exact price on this.,???i get feeling might be overpriced,i doubt will get many sales if only 200-300 less than apple air.
how could anyone have the price of a device we know nothing about ?
you have the feeling it might be overpriced, really like that ?
And you think that if it's only $300 less than the MBA it won't sell ? really, without any specification you can tell that ?
Dude you're a gold mine !
Nothin' says stylish like a VGA port sticking out the side.
(I know, every projector requires it)
If they could give it an external GPU option like the Fujitsu Amilo Sa 3650, I'd be all over this. : D
LTR - You are not looking at the MBA competitor.
Thanks TonyR...you've saved me from a life of loneliness commenting on Engadget.
I think the guy you're looking to burn is Chugg a few comments down.
This guys only referring to the new unibody macbook.
I could be wrong!
I am looking for an inter-species relationship. What can you do for me?
As Apple abandons Firewire, I see more and more windows laptops come with Firewire. Oh the irony.
plug your fast hard-drive, plug your camera and edit dv or hdv... Firewire is dead useful. its really a shame macbook dont have it. especially cause its so cheap to put.
As soon as the XPS 13 is available my M1330 is going on eBay so fast Michael Dell himself will get whiplash.
Anyone noticing that the chassis is just Sony Viao ?????
this is really beautiful. really nice looking lappy! and I cant wait to see the slim one... I hope the price will be a Dell price!
Still a Dell...
So? Dell makes crazy expensive computers but there are good.
(I mean the options are crazy expensive)
Wait... I thought the Latitude E4200 was a Macbook Air competitor? No?
it's quite pretty, i think it's actually the very first Dell Notebook I could like... great job please continue into this direction!!
WOW!!!!
That laptop just made me cream my pants. HOT HOT stuff.
Someone give the design department a pay rise.
WOW!!!!
Oh, for crying out loud. The Adamo is NOT going to be a competitor to the MacBook Air unless what the thing looks like is the only consideration when buying a computer. It WILL however be a competitor to the likes of the Lenovo X300 and Voodoo Envy. If the computer won't run your software then that's a problem. This is not a partisan comment but rather simple economics. I've got over £1000 invested in software for my computer and I am not about to throw all that away unless the other platform is going to deliver benefits of that sort of value. Sorry but this is a question that any platform switcher is going to be asking themselves.
wat
The man has got a point but really to engadget the major criteria of choice for a laptop is the thickness.
Same thickness same market dude that's the way it is down here !
No Matter the OS aren't the same, the specification won't probably either.
Will it come with 64-bit OS?
Both will most likely come with Vista (Both = Adamo and XPS Studio 13).
You did realise there are 2 devices in this post ?
(oh and yes Vista in a 64 bits OS like almost any recent OS)
