Fujitsu N7010 laptop with 4-inch touchscreen caught on video

The kids at Gotta Be Mobile have given the old what-for to the new Fujitsu N7010 laptop -- you know, the one with the 4-inch touchscreen above the keys -- and we have the video to prove it. All said, the reviewer seems pretty impressed by the thing, especially its remarkable 960 x 544 resolution. However, he did have some trouble getting it to work with Windows Journal. Since this is configured as a second monitor and not some sort of SideShow display, there are all sorts of possibilities, as long as you don't mind a little squinting. Depending on how you work, this might be one of those devices that you never knew you needed. Video after the break.

4-inch Touchscreen? That's what she said.

Assuming that Zinger314 is a "he" kind of being.

That's what the dog barked....
Seneca @ Dec 18th 2008 4:42PM
Statistically, the more touchscreens you own, the less likely anyone is going to be touching you.
jay @ Dec 18th 2008 11:32PM
But can you play pr0n on it? That, I think (therefore it) is the real question.
Jonathan @ Dec 18th 2008 1:30PM
I would think something like this would be much more practical than those expensive oled keyboards.
Shinigami @ Dec 18th 2008 2:01PM
OLED keyboards look much better, if they also were as usable and cheap as original keyboards...
In either case I don't find this small screen with lots of shortcuts practical in any way, I prefer to put my shortcuts on my desktop and quick launch instead and keep the eyes on the screen all the time instead of looking for a shortcut elsewhere.

/sarcasm???????
Damn you, you sarcastic BIATCH!
Mobius_1 @ Dec 18th 2008 1:32PM
I never knew I need a second smaller display, really.
who? @ Dec 18th 2008 1:51PM
Too bad it isn't just the computer's trackpad. That would be useful for controlling full screen media playback (like skipping to a different part of a movie by dragging your finger to that part) without the need to have controls pop up on screen and ruin it.
Also, I always wished that I could have a movie full screen and still be doing things in the background. A touchscreen trackpad seems like an ideal solution. Maybe next time.
Shinigami @ Dec 18th 2008 5:31PM
Skipping a part of the movie on 4-inch screen with dramatic accuracy...

Laptopmag.com got an episode of The Simpsons to play on the second display too.
Invisiblemoose @ Dec 18th 2008 4:17PM
This is just a secondary monitor... Of course you can play video on it...
GregLast @ Dec 18th 2008 1:37PM
What the hell are we thinking? The notebook isn't attractive, the 4 inch touch screen doesn't serve any REAL purpose. It a 4 inch touch screen just to have a stupid touchscreen. Technology keeps getting uglier and uglier.
Deed @ Dec 18th 2008 1:48PM
Do we REALLY need something that looks attractive enough to distract us from our usual tasks?
I appreciate that the perceived ugliness of the laptop might also be a distraction, but I think it just looks fairly plain and utilitarian. Additionally, while the touchscreen could indeed be just a gimmicky fad, Fujitsu's clearly made it their aim to test the waters, and at present the result is a laptop with quite a nice feature at face-value.
TheCow5 @ Dec 18th 2008 1:39PM
not a bad idea. I like it.
Cardbored @ Dec 18th 2008 1:39PM
move the touchscreen below the keyboard (making it the trackpad) and we got a deal
Ahmed Alzayani @ Dec 18th 2008 2:52PM
and then make the trackpad Removable so you can use it as Dockable MID.

Undock it and lose it.
Dez @ Dec 18th 2008 1:39PM
I gotta say, massive resolution for that little screen! Not quite the right size to be useful though. I personally would prefer something a bit larger, and indeed, i ordered a Nanovision UM-740 not long ago, hope to have it by christmas. Even though the resolution is not as great as this little 4 inch screen, I would say it has far more utility because I'm not sure I could even attempt to look at a document on that high resolution of a screen at that small of a size.

I plan on using it to house IM's, or a media player, or a video, or just a little extra desktop space.
Ariel @ Dec 18th 2008 1:41PM
A slide-out side monitor would be much more useful than a tiny one above the keyboard. Or, to make use of space, the small quick-launch monitor should be wider and shorter, like the mac os x dock.
LongshotX @ Dec 18th 2008 1:49PM
Unnecessary.
Decoy @ Dec 18th 2008 1:51PM
Vista features I forgot about:
Sideshow
Flip 3D
Ultimate Extras
Eric @ Dec 18th 2008 1:51PM
Is it just me or does it just look like all they did was put a Storm under the keyboard?
ty @ Dec 18th 2008 1:53PM
hmm, I don't hate it.
Shinigami @ Dec 18th 2008 1:55PM
960 x 544?
Tear it out and put in a phone!!!
Bill Grove @ Dec 18th 2008 1:59PM
I would LOVE to have that sort of feature on my iPhone. Have it tethered next to my computer as a sideshow screen. That way, for example, you could have macros for your programs on it, or your games, as a separate screen. VERY viable, just wonder why no one has done it?
Bill
ch4s3r @ Dec 18th 2008 2:02PM
Or a dedicated zoom view for Photoshop. That would be a dream come true!
Decoy @ Dec 18th 2008 6:57PM
Ah, Vista and the iPhone, together at last.
Kevin @ Dec 18th 2008 2:01PM
It could be nice as a monitor to see myself during a webcam chat or to watch a baby monitor. I don't see myself using the visual "buttons" much, though.
palehorse @ Dec 18th 2008 2:01PM
certainly not a bad idea... combine this with live TV and music via Orb and iTunes, and you'd have a pretty decent way to stay distracted while you're working on the road!
I do like the Nanovision UM-750 idea as well...
arash @ Dec 18th 2008 2:08PM
i will prefer that display with a capacitive technology replacing touch pad, this will be revolutionary. capacitive, multi touch, windows 7. just digging my mind
Deed @ Dec 18th 2008 6:17PM
I would prefer the display with capacitive touch, full stop. Then again, I'm not totally sold on it replacing a trackpad.
However, stick a decent clitpointer above the display and something good could come from that.
musback @ Dec 18th 2008 2:09PM
I just wonder: If this 4" can be such a high-res, why do al those netbooks get stuck at 10" 1024x600 piece of sh*t resolution?
I wouldnt use this touchscreen for quicklauch though, nice for music player, msn and downloading... removes the clutter from ur desktop.
Claudio @ Dec 18th 2008 2:33PM
awesome! but would be more confourtable if that touchscreen be at the right side of the touchpad
Parth @ Dec 18th 2008 2:35PM
I'll never turn to a PC ever again. Fuck Windows. Fuck it. I don't care if I get a Low ranked. Fuck that too. It's kind of gay anyway. Oh and Apple fucking rocks. There. I let my feelings out. Phew.
Orappa @ Dec 18th 2008 2:39PM

Kinger @ Dec 18th 2008 3:15PM
curious though, why would you need to switch your primary display to be on the bottom (like he did in the clip)
chansthename @ Dec 18th 2008 3:43PM
Didn't Mr. Blurrycam have a contract to get the laptop before anyone else?

Joel @ Dec 19th 2008 4:48AM
What's the use of the keyboard shorcut when there is a small touch screen?? whats the benefits for the users? I can't see nothing about that
