Android-stuffed Cupcake comes to Nokia's Internet Tablet
It has been but a matter of hours since we first heard of the Cupcake branch of Android, but the tweaked-for-the-better operating system has apparently already made its way onto Nokia's Internet Tablets. The latest port of NITdroid is chock full of those sweet, highly fattening Cupcake goodies, and honestly, this whole development makes us cautiously optimistic about where all this is headed. Anyone care to give their N810 somethin' new to run on? Let us know how it works out.

Any chance this could be ported to the N770? I have one here gathering dust, would be great to get ndroid onto it, it might then actually do something other than crash/reset!
DarkLight @ Dec 21st 2008 6:56PM
Give it to me. I can fix it and make it do useful stuff. (Not sure about Android though, but I don't mind much, I can work with the bare Linux)
DestroyerMTL @ Dec 21st 2008 8:52PM
Doubtful as the hardware spec is probably too dated.
Fred @ Dec 21st 2008 5:26PM
I love my N810, and I really like what I'm seeing about Android, but I'm remaining just cautiously optimistic here. I'd rather see someone with more time to invest than myself install this, and share how it goes. I use my N810 primarily as a GPS right now, with the occasional emergency backup ssh and https web use, for IT admin tasks. As long as I'm sure I'll be able to retain those abilities, I'll be willing to try any reversible steps.
kikya @ Dec 22nd 2008 12:48PM
did you get that gps working right? mine takes 278916 hrs to get a lock, even when i'm outside. that's highly annoying cuz i'd love to use gps more reliably. annnd, it's embarrassing when someone's smart phone Immediately picks up the signal, in the same place. help!!!
Fred @ Dec 23rd 2008 5:28AM
I just took a recent trip up and down the Pacific coast, and the GPS and navigation app trial worked great. The internal GPS antenna worked better than the bluetooth Earthmate GPS, that I was trying to use with my phone and the GoogleMaps Java app. I couldn't get any GPS in any dense urban areas with tall buildings, but I imagine that is a general problem unless you have aGPS features. I do prefer Google Maps to the Nokia map application, so I would definitely try Android as long as I can get some confirmation that the N810 GPS and WiFi drivers work, and I can get some kind of bluetooth tethering to my data plan phone.
thedesolate1 @ Dec 21st 2008 5:29PM
Cupcake is sweeeeeet.
Atanas Boev @ Dec 21st 2008 5:34PM
I will try it right away, as soon as I can find my freakin mini-usb cable...
Fred @ Dec 23rd 2008 5:32AM
I don't understand why Nokia can't conform to anyone else's USB and power connection standards. That is my #1 pet peeve about the N810 hardware. Regular SD is also preferable to MiniSD, but I just use a MicroSD with a converter, which keeps it usable on most phones. At least the N810 has a standard headphone jack, which is more than I can say for the T-Mobile G1.
FcknJuStiN @ Dec 21st 2008 5:45PM
wow so excited about this...would love to play around with this but i know if i install it i will be messing around with it all night...need to study for 2 finals so as oon as those finals are done monday afternoon i will install them

Oh man, this will be so sweet if (a port of) Android get's optimized for the next-gen Nokia tablets with the OMAP3xxx series (Cortex-A8/PowerVR SGX) processors!

I know you're a simple and pathetic troll, but it never hurts to clear up specious claims sometimes.
A simple Google Search shows the majority of reputable e-tailers are selling the N810 for around $350 to $360. Throw in a 16GB microSDHC for $50 (or an 8GB for $10 or whatever) and then you've got a very formidable ultraportable device for around $400.
I wouldn't compare it to the iPod Touch though. With its 4.13" screen, 800x480 resolution, QWERTY slider keyboard, microphone, front facing camera, Bluetooth, A-GPS, the magnificent capability to copy and paste (even text on a web page!!!) it wouldn't be a very fair comparison to the iPod Touch.
Finally, this very article is a great reason for quite a few people to consider the N810.
Why do you trolls do this anyway? Is it out of frustration for not being able to know the touch of a woman other than your mother?
Joseph @ Dec 21st 2008 7:13PM
Don't forget that the N800/N810 can run Adobe Flash. Something an iPhone or iPod Touch may never be able to do.
Kspraydad @ Dec 21st 2008 7:26PM
Simple answer for me is that I just don't like Apple products. Price really isn't the issue.

Egoothewaffle ,.sound like u extreme bitter virgin that dropped$400$(your weekly salary) on a device that will be discontinued shortly,.this says a lot about your personality your decision making , trying be different by backing a certain product that's tanking hard here in the USA ,. But u got ur copy/paste ,thats reeeeeeeally hurting the iPhone/touch ,.I'll be nice n let u borrow some of my applications,.got plenty to spare 289 n counting,.tell me how those sensors working 4 u. I know u trying to be different , u probably very frustrated individual.ill buy u a fannypack to store that nokia brick.:) heck I might even even throw in some of many remote control iPod docks in 4 u,

Schugg,
Some people choose to live their life like abused housewives and be tied up to some crippled piece of technology (and then bitch that within one month the price of their device drops by 50% - aka YOU)... and then some people choose to be free to do whatever they want with their device and live a happy life (aka eggothewaffle, myself and many other Nokia users). I'd suggest trying out a phone with an open OS (and I do mean a phone - not an iPhone or internet tablet, which by the way was never meant to compete with iPhone). You may see the light and the joy of having a completely open device that allows you to install EVERY single application on the market.
And by the way...just like eggothewaffle said...check your facts before you bitch. Have you looked at the number of Nokia Internet Tablet applications available? My guess is you have not.

Shyam D @ Dec 21st 2008 7:53PM
Since when was an iPhone $200. Last I checked it was $200 + $30 * 24, which I'm pretty sure any non-iphone calculator will tell you is $920. N810's go for ~ $350, and don't require any contract of any kind. Mainly because its NOT A PHONE DIMWIT.
Quit being an iEye clone and actually come up with an original and sensible argument. The N-series tablets were out long before the iPhone and cater to a completely different crowd that is unlikely to see the iPhone as a good replacement. The main contenders for them are the Archos PMPs.
Oh btw, your iPhone will be discontinued shortly too when Apple brings out a new iPhone with incrementally small benefit. At least the N-series tablets have added major feature sets to each new generation. Don't even get me started on your 289 and counting Apps. Do you have to use groups? One for the 100 Flash Light Apps, the other for the other 100 Remember the Milk Apps? Too bad the N810's run linux, the only have access to a majority of all OSS apps out there. That couldn't possibly top 289.
I have an honest question for you. Why do you think you know everything about a product without ever having used it? Btw, I have an iPhone. Used to have an N810. While the iPhone is a remarkably good device, it is not a trump all, and there are plenty of reasons to get one or the other. Quit trying to demean others for their choices just because you're not happy with yours. Insulting other people will not make you a better person.
pimpin @ Dec 21st 2008 8:24PM
Nice grammar.
Fred @ Dec 23rd 2008 5:43AM
I got my N810 in June for a steal at about $250, for an open box with everything intact and an equal-to-new warranty. I bought it because I needed a GPS at the time for an upcoming road trip, and that beat the price of all the other dedicated GPS boxes I was looking at, and it had way more features than any of them anyway. Now I also use it for WiFi web surfing and chatting, in coffee places and when my other computers are "in service". I get all the features I ever wanted of it, AND I can change to a new OS any time I feel the need, and Nokia doesn't have any say in it whatsoever. That's why you never hear any stories containing both "Nokia Internet Tablet" and "Unlock" -- that's its default state, and in my opinion that should be the default state for ALL software operated devices.
BlackRonin357 @ Dec 22nd 2008 1:29PM
My wife just bought one online today for me and waiting for it to ship. This will be a replacement for my ipod touch that got stolen earlier this year. And while I dearly loved my touch, I think I will love the n810 more, simply because their is so much more to love! I did my research and added maemo.org to my bookmarks cause thats gonna be a spot I'll stop at frequently! I like many features on the touch but didn't like that it was a extra down graded iphone! they could have kept the camera at least. But anyway, trolls are everywhere and need to be drug out in the street and shot in the face w/ hot urine!
mrthechairman @ Dec 25th 2008 10:21PM
I like my n810, but I don't think it's a good iPod replacement; the stock media player is pretty clumsy, and out of the available third-party ones, Canola is very slow to boot and has problems with media library management, UKMP is unstable and none of the others are better than Nokia's media player. I ended up getting a Zune for my music and videos instead.
maxkilla @ Dec 22nd 2008 12:11AM
works on the n800 too...770 on the way.
aaron @ Dec 22nd 2008 12:41PM

If you can keep us updated with the possibility of getting it on the 770, I have one collecting dust it would be nice to be able to play with again
Patriks7 @ Dec 22nd 2008 5:07AM
I wrote a really long answer to this and my sister closed the window before I clicked "Add" :/
So to keep it short, G1 = US, Symbian (mainly on Nokia) = Europe.. They don't really like to make nice posts on foreign products (which can be seen in some Nokia posts..)
But the next reason for this would be that Android is new.. Symbian has been out for many years and there's nothing to really report about it..
