Sony VAIO Japanese teaser suggests something long, thin, and "coming soon"
Sony is continuing its drip drip of teasers on a new entry to its VAIO line with a Japanese placeholder sure to pique just the slightest bit of curiosity. When you venture over to the company's co.jp landing page, you're greeting with a quick Flash animation of a woman pulling a long, thin rectangle out of her clutch... which ends up being an envelope reading "VAIO New Mobile, Coming Soon." Your guess is as good as ours -- as long as you're guessing it's this thing.

First!!! Merry Christmas!!!
You suck
Ouch too slow.
In other words...
Y O U S U C K
Christmas is RUINED now
Wow. The sheer stupidity of these comments is mind blowing.
Back on topic, I saw an Asus at Bestbuy that looked almost identical from the bottom. Asus was able to have a full size keyboard and number pad without being too gigantic.
I think it's an interesting idea.
Umm. Not sure about this.
Sony need to hurry up and make a PSP Phone rather than some bizarre looking net/notebook.
I do like that bouncing question mark in the flash trailer though! Highly amusing.
I bet it's dual screen
I say by 99% chance it is an UMPC that kinda looks like PSP with 1/2 of QWERTY keys on each side of the screen and 1% chance it is a fully touch based tablet PC with a fold-in-half/dual screen! The battery slot in the FCC shot seems to be too deep for it to be dual screen or even have a slide out keyboard. It might just have an OLED screen though?
That's what she said!
ah! beat me to it!
Yeah...hate to break it to you, but that meme is REALLY getting old.
The title of the article made me want to say that so bad.
To L, I know, and I considered your feelings fully before writing it, but this article title could not have been any more rife for satire.
Sincerest apologies,
Samnesral
I couldn't get past the title. I seriously thought that would be the first comment.
I'm coming soon?
"...long, thin, and coming soon."
"Sony is continuing its drip drip..."
Is Sony releasing a reader with erotic e-books?
Who the hell would want a laptop/notebook that smelt of FISH???
pr0n viewers like iEye
I'd like to see some woman put that in her clutch and then bitch and moan that there's no room for anything else.
You know that share prices aren't relative to each other, don't you?
Interesting that the teaser shows it in an envelope. A letter sized envelope is 4" X 9 1/2", awfully close to Engadget's estimate.
There is no way that is a standard envelope.... unless that his the hawtest midget I have ever seen.
Not the device-in-an-envelope idea again! Anything but that please
I always love sony designs.
Long and thing will go way in, but short and thick will do the trick.
Long, thin and "coming" soon????
I know that was the title of a porno movie.
I saw the movie "Long, thick and coming soon," maybe this is the sequel? I didn't think Sony was into this genre, though.
long & thin?! They're releasing an updated version of the Elder Wand! Now with 82% more killing!
looks like an envelope to me
lol @ the title. freudian slip josh?
Well I'd say that we have definite confirmation that the FCC pic is of what is coming, haha.
Gonna be an interesting form factor.
O rly?!
YaRly!! is it a MID????? perhaps?
NO WAI !!!
For Christmas...I'd like a Highly Ranked for saying something absolutely ridiculous lioke "does it run Crysis"
I love you engadget - i got my present !
Thats one hell of an AC adapter. Wonder how big the laptop is.
Merry Christmas!
It looks like a keyboard to me.
The extra width is for a mirror to see how awesome you look while using your sony.
Apple solved this by making the bezel so "glassy" (if that's even a word) :p
My comment is so low ranked i can't even find it on the page... mmhm. Christmas is really RUINED now.
P.S. thanks a lot for voting my comment
long, thin, and coming soon? well, i guess if you have a laptop fetish...
Wow....for anyone that has ever purchased a VAIO before you know very well how much you got ripped off...I certainly did! I am never buying another VAIO again. They are severely overpriced and really offer no benefits over other laptop in their class which go for much cheaper. The new designs of VAIO are just hideous and I urge you people to consider other brands. Save your money for something worth it.
sony makes some nice laptops but what really makes them fail sometimes is the amount of software they add to the laptop and the lack of support they offer. as far as looks they make some nice looking laptops. if sony plays its card right in the NETBOOK market they can make some serious money. SONY DONT BE GREEDY keep it in the 400-500 range.
@Obsolete Power
You should follow Williams lead. He properly demonstrates how to critique a product based on its weaknesses and not come off like a cry baby. In turn, he gets the +1 and you the -1.
that's what she said lol
Just what the world has been waiting for: a laptop with a 200x800 display.
Everyone knows that resolutions are measured by length x width..... 800 x 200....
The laptop isn't long and thing when opened, The keyboard is split across the two folding halves and their are two screens above it.
Oh, and I completely made that up.
Its the return of the C1 Picturebook series!
Wow, someone else that remembers these things! Every time I read something the "new" netbooks and how Sony has not moved into that market, I think back to the C1XS that I owned back in like '99.
Here's a few links to info and pics on this ultra small laptop:
http://www.videomaker.com/article/7684/
http://cowboyneal.org/vaio/
It only had like a 400mhz proc and 128mb RAM, but it was usable as what you'd call a "netbook" now. I brought it to the library at college and it literally attracted girls like crazy. They'd all come up and tell me how "cute" it was :)
Funny thing, I got linux working on it back then too, and when I searched for pics today I found cowboyneal's (of slashdot fame) site on getting linux working on it that I used way back then, almost 10 years ago now.
The laptop was super small, thin and light, and fit in my backpack with my books really easy. Browsing documents on it was a pain with a super small screen resolution but it was a good trade-off for portability.
it will be expensive and powered by windows= I don't give a fuck.
It's an OLED e-reader or some sort of e-reading device.
long, thin, and coming soon.....thats what she said
I got to see it today classy bit of tech, it wont reinvent the laptop but it will sell bucket loads
You didn't see shit.
Definitely dual screen
Im thinking the same thing Dual screen And it will sell out at $1000
I saw the sales presentation
and? what is it? short wide laptop?
hard to believe you when you say you saw it but dont offer any more info than that...
That woman has some of the longest fingers I have ever seen! Just look at her hand holding the bag!
wtf, instead of laptop you jerking with fingers?
wow you're right, that's creepy. alien styles.
maybe its photoshopped a bit.
That could be the fish eye effect of a Sony camera used to take the photo, and then again it's a model that actually believes in the old "the camera will add ten pounds", so it could also be related to a eating disorder.
Reminds me a bit about the elven weirdos in HellBoy II.
That's one hella of a tease...if you know what I mean ;D
Long, thin and coming soon?
Dude, Sony must be stalking me! o_O
long, thin and "tiny"
you get it right?
Long, thin, and coming soon... definitely doesn't sound like a laptop... If ya'll know what I mean.
..."long, thin, and coming soon".
Best title on a tech blog, ever!
"I'd like to see some woman put that in her clutch and then bitch and moan that there's no room for anything else."
How could you guys down rank this one?!
It's gonna be a crassic.
its a short wide laptop but the spec for processor is different from the leak from sony style. The spec I saw was either a 1.6 or a 1.8 atom
Japanese Penises?
I'm confused.
