IXtreme 1.5 unlocks your non-Hitachi spinning Xbox 360
We love a good hacker vs. hardware battle, and while Microsoft has thus far done a reasonably good job of keeping miscreants from diddling with the details of the Xbox 360's firmware, applying patches and dropping ban hammers on those who don't comply, as of this morning it seems to be losing the arms race. Team Jungle has released version 1.5 of its IXtreme firmware, allowing for (relatively) easy cracking and unlocking of Xbox 360 consoles containing LiteOn, BenQ, and Samsung DVD drives (i.e. the majority of them). That leaves only Hitachi owners out in the cold, but if that's you don't fret: your version is just a few weeks away. Happy homebrewing![Thanks, Andrey M]

I don't see MS losing the "arms race".
Hackers may have control over the optical disc drive but they still don't have control over the Hypervisor.
On the contrary, MS sells consoles at a loss (or at least not much of a profit as they're mature production now) and makes money off accessories and game license sales. While they would _prefer_ that consumers not run homebrew (because they want you to buy games), it's not a big deal. In contrast, piracy directly impacts revenue. It's true that the 360 hasn't been totally "owned" like the xbox1, but the only consequence of that is that nobody can claim they hacked their 360 to "run linux on it". Everybody who does it is a pirate.
Lame post promoting piracy, X360 homebrew is non-existent. I'm all for hacking and messing around with locked hardware for projects like XBMC or emulating dead platforms (SCUMM, MAME, etc.), but these firmware drive hacks are solely for playing pirated games. If the Xbox 360 scratches your disc just call Microsoft/the game publisher's phone support and request a replacement. Most will provide a new disc for a nominal shipping/handling fee.
If paying for games is too cost prohibitive then maybe you should find another hobby, gamefly or keep an eye on Cheap Ass Gamer. =)
As a user of Ixtreme 1.4 and catching the banhammer a few months ago I'm here to tell you the truth! I use this so I don't have to pay for video games! Does it make me a bad person, no! It makes me a cheap bastard that doesn't care about Dev's and money hungry publishers or MS. I'd rather pay $25 bucks for 20 dvd dl's and burn games that if they get scratched or just plain suck (cough Too human cough) then it doesn't cost me $60 bills or $35 after trade-in! I'm in this for #1. Its a recession and any of you dumb fools that can argue to me why I shouldn't do it are welcome, but you'll fall on def ears!
Know this, I'm not telling people go out and flash your system to play free games, but hey, if you wanna spend the time and resources to do so then be my guest. If not then don't hate on bulls gettin what you get for free cuz your too goody to wanna try or scared you'll get booted off XBL!
I kinda miss XBL, but not really since all I play are Single player games mostly, although I would love to get on and play L4D with some of you. Oh well, those are the breaks! I except it and when I get some extra stacks I'll do it on another 360 and be back at it!
Oh and we (flash modders) know why we got banned and how to go around it hence the new FW and updated tutorials!
Hope your boss lays you off, or you get a paycut. When I need my shoes cleaned I will come to you and give you 10 cents because that is what I think you are worth, who cares what you think your service is worth that is what I will pay. I am so self centered and have a sense of entitlement that you worthless people must bow down and do what I say at the pay I will offer you. Be glad I even pay you this much.
Maybe once you get a job and realize other people depend on getting paid and keeping their jobs developing video games then you will realize that paying for entertainment isn't just about you but about supporting those games and companies that are providing that entertainment for you. Maybe once you get a paycut because your boss thinks you are not as valuable then you will wise up a little about why certain things cost the way they do. Do companies make lots of profit - yes absolutely but many software development companies don't make constant profits and are always on the egde of going bankrupt due to one bad game, or a game selling badly.
"Its a recession and any of you dumb fools that can argue to me why I shouldn't do it are welcome, but you'll fall on def ears! "
I am broke, too. I just don't buy games. Being poor doesn't entitle you to a free ride. Are you on welfare and food stamps, too? Get a job, you whiny little baby. Just cop to the fact that even if you had money, you wouldn't buy games. No, you have to play the high and mighty "stickin it to the man" card like you're a rebel. You're a thief and nothing more. Take your self-righteous BS somewhere else.
Do you realize that people who are "too goody to wanna try or scared you'll get booted off XBL" are the reason you have games to steal in the first place? If nobody paid for games, there would be no games. I'm not going to tell you to stop stealing games, but I am going to tell you to get off your high horse and stop dissing people who don't.
Shrug, at least he's honest about his motivation. It's the guys who say they "want to run linux" that really tick me off. There's only one piece of homebrew that actually matters in the entire history of console gaming, and XBMC only runs on the xbox1.
no it doesn't. it runs on windows, it runs on appletv.. hell, didn't you notice there was even an article up on engadget today that haas XBMC running on a MID.
do people just say any old thing that pops into their heads?
I want to run linux on my ps3, but I haven't gotten around to getting a bigger HD yet ;)
The only modification I've done on my 360 was a DIY 120GB harddrive install that cost me a little over $50 rather than then $100 microsoft was demanding at the time. Getting free games is tempting and looks like an easy process, but I'd rather not take the chance of getting banned. Besides, I have no interest in playing most games that have been released and I buy only the ones I think will be the most entertaining. I don't really have a moral/ethical stance against those that do flash their xbox - it's the chance they're taking and only other software pirates will feel sorry for them if/when they're banned..
The reason I kept my original XBox and got a PS3 (instead of a 360) was MAME, and the ability to play DVD rips from a fileshare. (DLNA doesn't quite know what to do, and doesn't allow for interacting with the DVD menus.) XBMC is nice -- I love the youtube, apple move trailers, revision3, and other plugins -- but playing DVD rips off our file server is the primary thing use we have.
I own all the DVDs I rip -- mainly for convenience of playing and to open up shelf space. I own hundreds of DVDs (literally). I have never downloaded an XBox ISO, played it, and then not bought the game. I own dozens and dozens of XBox1 games. I'm holding out on a 360 until someone mods it so a decent MAME port can run, or I run out of games that aren't backward compatible. I paid for some of my ROMs (via StarROMs), even.
I'm a big supporter of content that I like, so people will continue making content that I like. The "in a recession" argument is retarded, at best. I hadn't bought any new PS3 retail games, sticking strictly to lower-priced downloadables. For Christmas, I bought my husband a few games and half of them were used. (Many publishers make money on post-sale downloadable content, so I don't dig the whining publishers make about people buying used games.) The new games were $25 or less.
Then again, another solution to spending less money in a down economy is to stop playing games, then go out and get laid.
"I bought my husband a few games"
Leave it to the gays to keep our economy afloat during a recession. Atta boy!
I run XBMC on ubuntu myself, but thanks for the tip. We're talking about consoles here, remember? Sigh... internet people.
Wake me when this hack can do everything my modded Xbox original can do. (XBMC, backup games to hdd, etc...)
This hack in particular will never allow anything like that. It's only for piracy.
What's the difference between this and ixtreme 1.4? I don't feel like pulling apart my xbox again.
One interesting thing this may allow, is the use of Trainers for single player games like you can use with the PC. I have a few games that I really liked, but couldn't complete because I got stuck at various stages. So maybe firmware adjustments such as this can also allow a legitimate feature other than Homebrew :single player game trainers and mods :)
No, it doesn't allow you to use trainers either. You can't run unsigned code on the 360. The ONLY reason to hack it is to pirate games.
I had this on my xbox360 and never got banned, its so worth the trouble!
@Joesph
please tell me more about the xbox live gold hack...
pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
If a firmware hack would make it possible to run XBMC on my 360 I wouldn't doubt for a second. The media center part on the 360 is utter crap. But just for copied games? Naah, not worth it.
even if MS ban you or catch you they don't ban on week days or weekends.
they do a full sweep end of year ban so if you modded it now an got 11 months out of it then got banned it's still well worth it.
buy 360 every year then modding it would cost 160 lol don't mind
rather that then spending like 500 pound worth of games.
Want to know who you guys recommend or know that if I send my XBOX they can put this on mine without me having to do anything. I can do this I am just lazy and would rather pay someone. Let me know guys thanks...I think its like $40 around there to do.
