If it feels like forever to you since OQO's
Model 02 hit the market, your instincts are pretty darn good. But if you were overly optimistic that the
Atom-powered prototype it showed off back in August (pictured) would eventually become a reality, you -- sir or madam -- take today's golden crown. In a recent Digital Experience! email blasted out to media members worldwide (full blurb is after the break), we're very clearly told that OQO will be on hand to demonstrate its new Model 2+. Said UMPC will pack a 1.86GHz Intel Atom CPU, a touchscreen OLED display, 2GB of RAM and global 3G connectivity. OQO even goes so far as to say that it will offer performance "up to twice as fast as its predecessor." Did our heart just skip a beat over a
UMPC? Why, yes it did!

OQO, Inc. announces the new model 2+ with the Intel® Atom™ processor, the world's first PC OLED display, and worldwide 3G capability. Based on the 1.86GHz Intel Atom processor and 2GB RAM, the OQO model 2+ offers performance up to twice as fast as its predecessor and includes an embedded touchscreen for easier input.
The OQO and other tablets make certain tasks much easier. I manage my wireless network using a tablet pc, doing things like site surveys, documentation and general monitoring tasks. Being able to use a stylus while walking around is a time effiecient method of entering data. I am looking to purchase an OQO Q1 to replace my tablet for the weight savings and portability that it gives you. I've talked to a group of Network Engineers that use them extensively and they love them. Though they are a little big, they do fit in your back pocket and cargo pants are no problem. These devices are for people who don't sit at their desks all day but are moving throughout their environment and needing access to their data. I would never recommend one to a friend but a collegue is a different story.
Wow. I could never afford one of these, but it's really sick.
I haven't used Windows 7 yet, so I can't say anything about that... but IMHO, this thing would be sick running OSX with an option to switch the UI over to an iphone-esque one for when you just want simplicity and a screaming fast browser/PMP/phone (with that HW.)
I'm not a fanboy, just my opinion, low rank me if it makes you feel better.
I've reported your post, but it didn't make me feel any better. =\
More on-topic: I'm a Mac fanboy (just clearing that one up), but I don't think this machine has the muscle to run a full OS X really well, and OS X iPhone is too limited. A full OS X is going to be as enjoyable as sucking chunky shit through a straw on this machine. I think.
Windows... don't get me started on that.
Some slim Linux-distro tho... that would be sweet. Apart from Android (does that run on Atom?), how is touch support on Linux? I'd be thinking about somethink like Xubuntu, or a custom mix of packages from Debian.
For those of you who are bashing the OQO...I have owned it for nearly two years now (Model 02), and I have bought and sold a bunch of laptops in that time, but the OQO always stays with me. I have used it for document creation, and it works just fine. Great battery life, amazing screen, decent chicklet keyboard...it is an excellent device. I'd buy it again if this one ever went down. I sent it back once for an issue, support was great. It's the first time I ever took out the extended warrantee on a computing device because I intend to hold on to this for a long, long time.
Slap Windows 7 on it and that would make this even more appealing.
Is it a MID or UMPC??? Buy the way, I'm looking forward to the OLED display, I have never seen that on a computer before.
that shit is dope
Hmmmmm.... Sure would be a sweet product for the next "Engadget Give Away"! :D
Since when has information or knowledge been the cornerstone of consumer accorance? It seems fair to assume that all of you arrogant commenters who drone on endlessly about statistics and performance are the ignorant ones.
Electronic purchases rely much more on emotion than hardware. A fact you geek-elitists might want to remember if you ever decide to produce a product of your own.
In summation: stfu about reasons people should/shoudn't buy gear based on obscure information you're privey to and judge others for. People who buy this device will like it (for the most part) and the company will stay in business if enough people do.
I don't care if you don't like my choices, I do.
Doing your homework before you drop $2000+ on a gadget isn't arrogance, it's common sense. Unless you like disappointment.
acceptance*
If only the price will be worth it. Since it's OQO, it's gonna be a premium.
But if anything, it would be nice to replace my OQO 01+.
The only word out of this whole article that made my heart juump was that it uses Touch OLED display. Finally the first steps in replacing LCD's in PMPs!!!
Newsflash to good grief: most people don't do your kind of research AND they aren't disappointed. That was the point I made when I said "People who buy this device will like it (for the most part)".
It's cool, but the cost has always been prohibitive.
Netbooks have killed UMPCs and MIDs. If there were more netvertibles they'd be even deader. Price MATTERS, especially in this economy.
Atom and Touch screen are nice updates but unless they've improved the two or so hours of batter time I don't think they will have much success in the current atmosphere of all SSD MIDs such as the Aigo and Gigabyte M528 for way under $1000 even with 3G!
