HP greets us with 13.3-inch Pavilion dv3 entertainment laptop
While you and HP can argue the rest of the night away about the most accurate moniker for its Pavilion dv2, the dv3 is definitely an ultraportable. The AMD-powered machine comes in a plethora of configurations with CPUs ranging from 2GHz (Athlon X2 QL-62) to 2.4GHz (Turion X2 Ultra ZM-86), ATI's Radeon HD 3200 graphics, up to 8GB of DDR2 RAM, 160/250/320/400GB hard drive choices, WiFi / Bluetooth, a dual-layer DVD burner, gigabit Ethernet, an ExpressCard slot and a satisfactory array of ports including three USB 2.0 sockets, VGA, HDMI, eSATA combo (with a third USB port) and audio in / out. Users can select from a six or nine-cell battery, and there's even an optional fingerprint reader if you're unashamedly paranoid. Interested? It's available today, junior, for $799 and up.

madscientist101 @ Jan 6th 2009 1:07AM
nah it wasnt the samething... diff models. one a best buy is intel processor an isnt integrated graphics
Jeremy K. @ Jan 6th 2009 1:04AM
That was the dv3510nr. It's the same device but with an Intel chip. This is HP's way of releasing the BestBuy only "blue label" laptop to other resellers.

I've got the previous model to this..
Selling it to get a Sony Vaio 11.1" for ultra portability
kingofwale @ Jan 6th 2009 1:04AM
how much does it weight? This one doesn't seem to be that light.
Soulsaber @ Jan 6th 2009 1:09AM
4.35 pounds according to the read link.
kingofwale @ Jan 6th 2009 1:19AM
thanks... funny how 4.3lb is considered "ultra-portable" now. *sighs*
Soulsaber @ Jan 6th 2009 1:22AM
Maybe the term "ultraportable" is just for the screen size lol.
Shinsengumi @ Jan 6th 2009 1:15AM
No matter how good the hardware is, it is still running Windows......
adam @ Jan 6th 2009 1:40AM
Funny I say that's a major plus!
Vista 64 bit with 4+ gigs of ram just flys!
I love it

am i the only one that noticed a surge of i hate windows comments after engadget did their whole macworld blogging
i mean before it was normal fanboy's like ooh "MICRO$UCKS is balls!" which was okay cuz you knew they were trolls
but now people are targeting specific products like windows. like, "good hardware and windows! OH NO" or "IMMA INSTALL OSX"
the trolls are getting smarter guys. stop feeding them food for thought

I have an older model of this series (DV6885se) and I like it. Well designed, solid laptop. I've upgraded it, it came with 3GB of the slower DDR2 memory, and I got the 800 speed + the 7200 RPM HD. I'm a little annoyed, my laptop is the last without e-SATA, at least it has HDMI. If this has a 12 cell battery like mine (I think mine is 12 cell, it prodrudes like a laptop stand) it won't be very portable! But that helps a whole lot with battery life. I also got rid of Vista in favor of Ubuntu and Server 2008
Over all it is a good laptop, and I have a feeling that this model will be very good too... Even though I still want a Mac... I have OSX running on it fine though ^^

My sister recently bought the dv3510nr, which is practically the same thing as this. The keyboard is fantastic, the best I've ever tried. Everything else is quite good. The touchpad isn't as good as the lenovo ones, so that's the only downside.
aznofazns @ Jan 6th 2009 1:33AM
How is this an ultraportable?! It's a thin-and-light. Ultraportables are generally 12.1" or smaller and weigh 4 pounds or less.
sajitmo @ Jan 6th 2009 2:22AM
good article!
superhobo @ Jan 6th 2009 2:36AM
Not bad for the price.
Uncontrol @ Jan 6th 2009 2:46AM
Evidently my 13.3" MacBook is also an ultra-portable now? Awesome!
Dyranios @ Jan 6th 2009 2:59AM
Is it possible to buy this in the UK , on the official hp website I can only find about 5 different types of laptops it looks like they gave up or something.
svetoslav.dankov @ Jan 6th 2009 3:02AM
In Asia HP has been selling the dv3000 which is pretty much the same thing except with a T8100 processor, NVIDIA 8400m GT. Oh and the color was silver. From what i can see on those photos the track pad will be the same - that is the biggest problem with this laptop, it simply sucks. Also expect the laptop to be smudge-free for exactly 0.01 seconds. Other than that I am pretty satisfied - it is fairly portable, it has the power to do what i need and was cheap (when i bought it last year it was around $1000, and its not the base model)!
stupidgit @ Jan 6th 2009 3:13AM
Man, I'm getting tired of these bronze/gold/brown colored laptops. I was hoping it wouldn't become a trend.

> It's available today, junior
I see what you did there

What is it with this 64mb of video ram stuff they've been pumping out? I would've picked up the new tablet except for the weak-ass video card.
Sam Zebian @ Jan 6th 2009 6:06AM
Anyone else notice in the description on the read link states it has a backlit keyboard, which Engadget failed to mention. Pretty nice feature worth mentioning...

My personal advice is don't touch an HP laptop with someone else's !
My laptop died outsode of warranty, wouldn't boot even the bios so i did what anyone would do, i sold it on ebay for spares and repair.
Then one month later HP emailed to say that they were recalling my model (DV2000) due to nvidia's faulty chips. A real pity the HP rep i spoke to about my out of warranty problem had no clue about recalls.
In a word BASTARDS
mynk @ Jan 7th 2009 3:14AM
lol dude i had problems with other things before, and they had a recall on my model for wireless card / motheboard compatibilty issues after some time of use...
i didnt hit that problem until my "said time of use" but i hit other problems, in which my HP rep didn't mention the recall. when my wireless card went out, i tried everything and went on HP site, and some forums. and i found out by myself that there's a recall. plus with HP and Microsoft, ive realized that they help you even when you're out of warranty, and for free sometimes even.
Maikel @ Jan 6th 2009 9:17AM
Nice HP. I have a DV4 which is basically the same laptop with just an 14.1" screen instead. So, I'm assuming this new one is as good as mine.
m-p{3} @ Jan 6th 2009 9:23AM
Could be interesting. As long as it doesn't weigth more than 6 lbs.
