Here we've got the fruits of
AMD's new Neo platform: the Pavilion dv2 series of entertainment laptops. Starting at 3.8-pounds with a keyboard 8% short of full-sized, this 12.1-inch (1,280 x 800 pixels) ultra-portable features a 1.6GHz Athlon Neo MV-40 processor, up to 4GB of memory and 500GB of disk, optional 802.11n WiFi, and WWAN (
Gobi) support. Now what if we told you that this 64-bit Vista Home Premium laptop (no need for the XP fallback here kids) measures less than an inch thick and can be configured with ATI Mobility Radeon HD3410 discrete graphics and an external Blu-ray player for $899 when it ships in March? More you say? Ok, there's also Bluetooth, HDMI-out, an integrated webcam, and 3.5 to 4-hours of battery with prices set to start at $699. Isn't CES wonderful?
Sign me up.
I know it isn't just me, but, I'm underwhelmed by "Blu Ray" being the new major selling point on Laptops.
Back when Blu ray was at war with HDDVD - I knew HDDVD would lose and that Blu ray would be the new thing, but I didn't really predict that I wouldn't right away jump to get Blu Ray disks - especially when DVD's still cost less than $8 ($15 new) and Blu Rays are over $25.
I don't want a Blu Ray player. If I'm spending - I want a BluRayRW/ DVD-RW. i can wait till those hit the shelves for less than $1000
... God, shut up, Flashpoint.
He's a douche, but Flash is right... what's the point of a BluRay player in a 12 inch laptop, other then to needlessly raise the cost?
Hopefully there is an option to remove it when ordering from HP.
I read "HDMI-OUT"
Makes that Blu-ray drive a lot more interesting!
where is the cd drive located in this laptop? i dont see it..
@spankme, learn to read! The drive would be external.
"Don't call it a netbook"
Shall "ultraportable" suffice?
Any chance they'll release this with something less sucky then AMD inside? Pretty sure there is room enough in there for one of those sexy Nehalem mobile chips.
Then you'll be looking at a $1000 laptop. Or every other laptop on the market.
This chip was designed so the bottom line is that it can play 1080p H.264 smoothly.
The whole point of putting an AMD processor in this is to making more powerful than something like the Atom but still cost less than a standard laptop also with the ATI HD3410 Graphics makes this a nice little media laptop. Oh and did you idiots complaining about the whole Blu Ray drive not read where it said price to start at $699 and with the "external" Blu Ray $899.
ugly.
that is all.
I'd venture to say that most people here, including myself, would disagree. That is a very sexy machine.
VERY sexy.
Hot. I'm in love even though I HATE HP.
It's neither ugly nor pretty, it's just a notebook, black and rectangular, words like ugly and nice looking can only be applied to something that has a look
Nice price, nice specs; too bad it uses Windows.
riiight... because you can't install whatever you want on it
Stop talking to yourself mike.
@Mike, soulsaber
stop lying to yourselves.
Why? You arent expecting it ship with OSX are you? You can always put your own Linux distro on it.
If you are to the point where you dont use Windows at all, then surely you must be used to buying your hardware with Windows and reloading it. At least if you are buying laptops.
because OSX won't be hacked to work on this within 1 month of its release. But I bet you didn't expect the spanish inquisition
(nooooooooooobody expects the spanish inquisition..........)
Yes please
HP should get a booth and show this at the MacExpo.
I've got a 12.1" tablet from HP, and besides the heft I'd like to trim (do I really need a remote control for my tiny PC?), it's killer. Love to see one of these...
Beauitful...that is all....
This would be nice for my little brother.
HP is bringing that heat!
I dont understand why they made the keyboard not full size, in the picture it looks like there is plenty of room for an additional 8%
Well, there is plenty of room in this world for my 115 lb wife, but I wouldn't mind her being 8% smaller...
@L3
If I'm gonna have my hands on it all the time, I think I would like mine to be regular size. As for my wife, what I like to have my hands on all the time wouldn't be bad to have 8% larger.
would have been great if it looked better.
So would your face!
what happened to the highest ranked rating? i miss that so much!
Something just dosen't look right with this laptop. Probably that the borders at the top and bottom of the screen are too thick, and that big gap between the screen and the main chassis, making the whole machine look bigger and out of proportion than it should.
I saw all these crazy HP rants,
and I jizzed in my pants.
Don't worry, this was the first time, and you were grabbing my butt anyways.
that is one of tighest looking hp's i've seen in about 12 years.,will have no problem selling..12' $649.
if it had a Blu-ray drive... where would it be?
It's an external Blu-ray drive.
Reading is fundamental.
Some asshole spilled White-Out all over that otherwise good looking portable computation contraption.
it was an HP fanboy that got a little too excited
Netbook!
please don't low rank me because i'm dumb, but is the athlon neo an atom-like processor?
http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/06/amd-kinda-sorta-takes-aim-at-atom-with-athlon-neo/
Low ranked not for being dumb but for missing your answer by one post.
Does it even have a wide screen to watch blu-ray properly?
No it just has a widescreen resolution because hp knows we like looking at squashed images.
Why do these things have such short battery life, this thing will run out of juice by the end of a medium-range flight. You'd think that with all the technology power nowadays someone will have figured out a way to power a small laptop for at least 10 hours...
They have, it's called an AC adapter.
OK obviously I was talking about an internal battery, not an adapter
See, now I just feel silly.
Solar?
Wind?
Water?
Heart?
By your powers combined i am captain planet!
Wow, I like the side profile. Too bad HP insists on making laptops with floral designs. That'll go well with the business crowd.
Aaaaand my holding out has just payed off, thanks AMD!
...Can it play Left4Dead? :I
Keeping a eye on this baby.
Warranty aside, should I be thinking about returning my Asus N10J for this?
Not bad at all!
Nice - looking forward to benchmarks of that system. Sounds like a good VFM device for *mobile* use.
Can it play GTA IV ?
Now if HP would keep that beautiful design and make it a fifteen incher...
Obligatory "that's what she said."
If we can't call it a netbook, let's call it a bag of hurt!
where is the cd drive located in this laptop? i dont see it..
It is a netbook. The cd drive is external...
I'd call it a deluxe netbook.
All it needs is Windows 7 and we have a winner
Windows??? asshole...
This is awesome news for AMD and for people shopping for budget laptops.
I love netbooks... but I do feel a 10 inch screen with a 1024x600 screen and inability to smoothly play HD content is a little lacking. This will be a "do everything" laptop, and be very affordable. I'm hoping most manufacturers jump on this bandwagon and start creating 12-inch ultraportables and hope the prices start trickling down into the 400-500 dollar range.
Looks like I finally found my new notebook. Under 4 lbs, 3.5 hous of battery life, a good screen res, decent processing power and discrete graphics for under $1000? That's exactly what I wanted, just gotta save up.
My thoughts exactly, though I'd gladly spring for a bigger battery to get more life out of it. I'd need at least 6 hours to be really happy considering how portable this thing is.
This or the new Mini 2140...decisions decisions...
What's the point of having Blu-Ray playback on a tiny screen that doesn't support 1080p resolution???
Read: "HDMI-out"
Or i'd just read previous comments . . . . .
