ASUS debuts 18.4-inch W90 gaming laptop at CES 2009
Got an itch for a gaming laptop that's big enough to span the laps of both you and your lover? ASUS has you covered. Here in the desert, the outfit has introduced a potent 18.4-inch gaming rig with a 1080p panel, twin ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4870 X2 GPUs, three RAM slots (a world's first, mind you) stuffed with 6GB of DDR2 memory, a Core 2 Duo processor, a half dozen (seriously) Altec Lansing speakers and a Turbo Gear function that will enable users to overclock the system and boost performance by as much as 25%. A few more configurations are available, including one with a 17-inch panel, an NVIDIA graphics option, dual HDDs, an optional Blu-ray drive and enough ports to put your average desktop to shame.

For all those happy with a 5 minute battery this is great, imagine the horror in dropping it though!
hmm...a suitcase with speakers on your lap. groovy.
Excellent. Now, I am thinking (before anyone goes crazy) that Asus means 4870X2 like the other Crossfire Solutions have thus far (OCZ Whitebook, Alienware M17, etc.) but if it really does have 4 GPU's, nVidia better get ready because ATi will be taking the notebook performance crown in no time...
Can't wait to buy one!
Seriously, what is the point of this? No matter how hard you try, you cannot make laptops play games decently. Trying just ends leaves you with this horrid mess. This "laptop" is nothing of the sort: the screen makes a huge size footprint, a trackpad will never compare to a mouse, the thing will invariably feel like a sack of bricks, and the battery will be sucked dry in an hour if you actually want to play games.
The idealistic visions of desktop replacements are gone. Leave these overweight monstrosities in graveyard with eMachines and go back to making reasonable laptops and proper desktops.
most people dont play their games unplugged with the trackpad you dolt.
Can you play Left4Dead... IN BED?
Seriously, gaming, or computing in general while horizontal is extremely comfortable and worth ANY price to a lazy person such as myself.
My Clevo is almost 2 years old and I can play everything out there (GTA IV kicks its ass, but that's a crappy port), usually on 1680X1050. And I also game with it on my lap. Chassis doesn't burn even after several hours and I only need my G9 and headphones there's too much noise.
That, sir, is totally false. I have had 2 consecutive gaming laptops, the Gateway P-6831FX and the Asus G50VT-X1, both of which are not too huge, not too expensive and play new games quite well, and the current generation FX series play games even better.
If you're on the road for your job and you take your entire desktop computer with you so you can game, then there's more wrong with you than the guys who'd buy this laptop and plug it in and use a USB mouse just like all the other not stupid people.
"gaming laptop that's big enough to span the laps of both you and your lover?"
Don't you mean: "a gaming laptop that's big enough to partially span the lap of an average gaming american?"
This isn't the first laptop to have 3 ram slots. The Asus G71 series has that already.
He is correct on that
The press release clearly refers to a single mobile 4870X2.

The point is, people want power to go and don't always have the luxury of hauling an entire desktop and monitor set up with them wherever they go. Really, the idea is lost on you, so I guess I won't bother to explain the fact that no person who games on a laptop uses the track pad but instead uses a USB mouse, probably similar to the one you use at home on your desktop, or that Laptops can play games just fine and that your spouting off incorrect information (My Dell XPS M1730 with SLi 8800GTX's makes a good argument...) for the sake of trying to make yourself look knowledgeable is a poor excuse for... well I'm not sure what your doing here other than trolling this post.
But seriously, we can't all bring our desktops with us, and for those of us that need portable power, these are the kinds of laptops we use.

+1
Just because it is called a laptop, it doesn't necessarily imply that it wont spend its time in the same spot in different locations - case in point being myself and several university friends who need a laptop to move between home/work/lectures. We bought a laptop because its easy to pack up and move around when we have to, but well equipped enough to play games.
Desktop Replacements are turning into Desk Replacements.
I for one welcome our new gargantuan notebook overlord.
Is.... is it wrong if I have an erection?

Not at all, Esat Dedezade. Not at all.
futuristic!
will it keep my pizza warm?
4870x2 sounds attractive, wonder if they have better preformance than 9800M GTX SLi. Anyway, hope this beast is compatible with quad core processors, also that second computer inside laptop stuff just released by ASUS is awesome and hope can be added into this gaming gear.
Toshiba X300 would surely be better then this although not having HD display, what are Asus thinking with only putting DDR2 ram in this!! get DDR3 out there!
DDR3 gives you maybe 5% increase in performance. Nothing to worry about and nothing to waste money on.
On top: I highly doubt a 9800M GTX can compete in any way with a Mobility 4870 X2. So I wouldn´t say the Toshiba would be better than this. Already the G70SG of Asus ( with a 9800 GTS ) comes near the 9800GTX model of the 300er Series of Toshiba for 70% the price AND has the much better Display on Top 9800MGTS to 9800MGTX is a small step

Fantastic! Asus, This the one i'm waiting for, a strong desktop replacement, But why C2D there is C2Q and C2X. I don't want more mobility. I'm working Saudi Arabia sometimes i need to travel to site to site. And I need to hold there for some weeks. Can't carry my DeskRig with me. My old Hp pavilion can't run my favourite games decently. But this is the replacement for both of the problems. I will buy one ASUS eeePc for mobility(Pretty Cheap replacement for hp pavilion). and this one (The 18.4 monster) will replace my Desktop monster. I can carry this with me (not on shoulder there is enough space in my car to hold this demon) from site to site. Ok! Asus u r great u know my feelings ( I will be 100% Asus after getting this one). But Asus one more thing I need to replace my iPhone 3g, Do u have something there?
only three word for it " I WANT ONE "
Very deceiving description (both Engadget and ASUS site). First they claim it can have TWO 4870X2s but in ASUS' spec list it lists it as just a single 4870 Crossfired (4870 times2). This is immensely different as TWO 4870X2s = 4 4870 chips (2 cards since 4870X2 is a card by itself with 2 4870s mashed in beside each other) while a 4870 x(TIMES)2 = 2 single 4870s. And I didn't think they had the 4870X2 in mobile form.
Any idea when it is coming out?
Also ASUS website says it is 4870 SLI 1024MB, not dual 4870X2. It's a huge difference.
But can anyone tell me it's 1024MB "share" by 2 cards, or 1024MB for "each" card?
I hope it's under $2000. One thing I like about ASUS's gaming laptop is that although it does not perform as well as Alienware, it's a lot cheaper.
Sorry, my mistake, it should be 4870 CrossFire.
ASUS improves a lot on the designs.
