Sony's VAIO P up for pre-order in all sorts of hues
Sony's VAIO P netbook ultraportable isn't slated to start shipping until February here in the States, but those absolutely certain that they want one stuck in their coat and / or rear pants pocket can get in line starting today. The pre-orders are open for Sony's 1.4 pound VAIO, with $899.99 to $1,499.99 securing your spot on the launch list. They're available in a whole heap of colors (garnet red, emerald green, onyx black, crystal white and classic black), and there's even an engraving option if you're already thinking about a rather spectacular Valentine's Day gift. Hint, hint, gentlemen.

Bit late arn't you? This went up last week!
erhan @ Jan 15th 2009 1:36AM
Fits well in you back pocket because it makes room by thinning out your wallet.
Andrew @ Jan 14th 2009 2:29PM
A bit expensive for a netbook but very tempting though ...
a ham sandwich @ Jan 14th 2009 2:37PM
you said that just to call it a netbook, didnt you?
Me @ Jan 14th 2009 2:38PM
Don't call it a Netbook!!!
Andrew @ Jan 14th 2009 2:46PM
@ham

Andrew @ Jan 14th 2009 2:48PM

Ive paid that price once for a gaming video card... what a dumbass I was! (in 4 months the price was 4 time less) Still this one look really portable. probably the best form factor out there.
CosterMonger @ Jan 15th 2009 10:15AM
of course it is not a netbook: netbooks have touchpads!
pika2000 @ Jan 14th 2009 2:32PM
Why would one pay that much money to buy an overpriced slower atom netbook with Vista, especially when Windows 7 is around the corner.
Thinker @ Jan 14th 2009 2:49PM
Because you get three times the disk performance of a regular notebook if you get the 128GB SSD drive. Plus it is incredibly small, and still gives you a full size keyboard. The screen dimension at 1600 x 768 is awesome, and gives you the option to increase the font size conveniently. It is a little pricey; but for what you get, it is priced right! This is not another me-too system. We wanted something different, and Sony delivered!
Mr. Ford @ Jan 14th 2009 6:49PM
Uhhh, because we can afford it. It's called a job. You go do work, they give you money. The better the work, the more money they give you. The more money, the more exclusive the product. Neat idea huh?
Not having to carry the same tiny "netbook" as the 12 year old girl at Starbucks makes going to work worth while.
If you have name brand clothes or shoes, a car that cost more than $1000, or internet (which you obviously do), you spend money on luxuries. Your luxuries are no more important or special than anyone else's. If you don't find value in a product then don't buy it. There is no need to criticize others who see value that you don't.
Jason @ Jan 14th 2009 8:03PM
Wait so you go to work so that you can buy an overpriced laptop so that you can feel like going to work is worth while?
CosterMonger @ Jan 15th 2009 10:16AM
windows 7 is around the corner but you'll still have to wait for SP1. (early adoption sucks)
Jeff @ Jan 14th 2009 2:32PM
Yeah, but its a Sony so it'll be busted in 9 months.
superhobo @ Jan 14th 2009 3:05PM
At least it's not a Mac.
Cybergypsy @ Jan 14th 2009 3:14PM
I will stick with my macbook air :)
Boards of Canada @ Jan 14th 2009 7:28PM
Come on, sony computers have the best history of hardware quality. Way better than tosh, mac and dell.
ILoveApple @ Jan 14th 2009 2:34PM
I love you, Darren. If I buy you a Vaio P with your name engraved in it... Would you marry me?
TB soon, babes xoxoxox.
glenskey @ Jan 14th 2009 3:23PM
oh my god!! your getting tuberculosis?!!
someone @ Jan 14th 2009 8:55PM
so do you love apple, or darren? or both?
Alex @ Jan 14th 2009 2:36PM
$1499? Are they crazy? Oh, wait, nvm, it's a Sony.
Temple @ Jan 14th 2009 6:00PM
Read. It starts at $899, plus its cheaper then a Macbook Air. The expensive version is the one with 128GB SSD, which is most of the cost.
jah @ Jan 14th 2009 2:38PM
£849 to £1,399 at Sony UK!
ILoveApple @ Jan 14th 2009 2:41PM
This is one reason to hate Sony. That's basically a 1:1 exchange rate! WTF?!?!
mirakutea @ Jan 14th 2009 2:54PM
Like kencos coffee, you need to be really rich:).
decypher44 @ Jan 14th 2009 2:49PM
Dear Sony,
Your products are very overpriced. Like Apple, you make a nice looking product. However, that's where the similarities end. The Apple tax is only for Apple products. Please adjust your prices accordingly.
Thank you.
2cdneh @ Jan 14th 2009 2:49PM
All the press has indicated that the 3G was EVDO, but the site says different:
15. 3G enabled for tri-band HSPA (850/1900/2100 MHz) Subscription with a third party carrier is required. Service activation and other fees apply. Terms & Conditions and additional restrictions apply.
Does anyone know what the real story is?
Christian @ Jan 14th 2009 2:53PM
Wow, thank you Sony for destroying the definition set by Intel as to what netbook stands for.
I'll be in your store pre-ordering the Garnet Red since tomorrow's my bday and it's my birthstone.
k4ffy @ Jan 14th 2009 3:00PM
why is the $899 one 0.1 lbs heavier than the other two?
Mr. Ford @ Jan 14th 2009 6:52PM
So you will work harder. (read comment above about work)
Chin-Poh @ Jan 15th 2009 5:32AM
Because the lower end models use a HDD and the higher end ones use a SSD, thus accounting for the weight difference.
bob @ Jan 14th 2009 3:05PM
And if you're a Sony employee (or related to one), that's $764 to $1274.
Boards of Canada @ Jan 14th 2009 7:30PM
wow!!
Brian @ Jan 14th 2009 3:05PM
they could've made a great netbo- I mean, laptop. they could've blown away the competition with a revolutionary design and technology. They could've priced it so competitively, the competition would just give up.
But instead, they give us typical specs, an old design and a high price.
unzarjones @ Jan 15th 2009 12:02PM
Nice shape, pretty enough for the hairless boys, but underpowered. Wait for the next gen(or two).
Itchy Pajamas @ Jan 14th 2009 3:14PM
I'll wait until I can play with it at the Sony store. If I like it, either I'll buy one or I'll cut my MacBook Air in half.
thomas @ Jan 14th 2009 3:18PM
sorry, my money is going to the palm pre

pola090 @ Jan 14th 2009 3:21PM
i think its a lil bit pricy but i think the engraving option should have some font variation its way too boring finally they claim the ear phones come with select models i think for anybody shelling that much for this baby must have all the accessories thrown in for free . and all buying the 128GB SSD should at least hav the high cap battery included .but all in all this babe is a real statement in technology this small things has all a decent laptop had 2yrs ago and more .Wow
Mr. Ford @ Jan 14th 2009 6:55PM
, . . , . , .
I think you forgot these.
Jo @ Jan 14th 2009 3:44PM
I have to say those things are cool. But way too expensive.
Gordon @ Jan 14th 2009 4:12PM
I couldn't...Not after the last podcast. I'd at least wait for Windows 7 to be out, official and supported on it first. The size looks great but terrible Vista performance would be painful.
Luis Neng @ Jan 14th 2009 4:35PM
I just don't like the idea that the European version doesn't have GPS!
I think I'll wait for the 2nd generation to see if Sony will add it or not.
Jash Sayani @ Jan 14th 2009 4:55PM
Not worth... I'd prefer the tablet version (which is also cheaper)....
BrianM @ Jan 14th 2009 5:04PM
Still trying to figure out how this is better than my $399 After Rebate HP 2133 w 2GB Ram, 120GB HD, BT, Camera, WXGA, w/vista? Seriously is the built in GPS work $500? or is my external BT one I got for $50 going to make me feel a whole lot better about the $450 in my pocket?
PS Mine runs Win 7 with Aero just fine thanks.
shugg @ Jan 14th 2009 5:16PM
wow , i cant believe it .only $99 if i do 2 year contract with att.,very tempted to do it.,
Wwhat @ Jan 14th 2009 7:56PM
It''s cute but 900 freaking dollars? And that's the starting price too..
Don't do drugs kids, and then become CEO.

Get a macbook air, it's way better with its OSX operating system. This VAIO is a piece of plastic junk.
