CherryPal calls its Bing netbook a nettop, can't win for losing
We know, these newfangled terms can certainly get confusing, but you'd think a company producing miniature laptops would do a little research before assuming that "nettop" is actually just another word for "netbook." CherryPal has made it exceptionally easy for us to joke on it by introducing the first nettop we've ever seen that actually looks nothing like a diminutive desktop. In fact, the eco-friendly Bing has a fold-up 10.2-inch LCD -- you know, exactly like a laptop. Inexplicably launched this weekend at the Sundance Film Festival, the machine includes a 1.6GHz Atom N270 processor, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, a 160GB hard drive, three USB 2.0 ports, an SD / MMC / MS card reader, WiFi, dual speakers, a 1,024 x 600 resolution panel, 0.3 megapixel webcam and a headphone jack to boot. Pricing is expected to hover around $250, but for a limited time, users interested in an actual nettop (imagine that, right?) can snag the Bing along with the C114 PC for a grand total of $399.

maybe instead of notebook, laptop, hence "nettop"?
The point was that 'nettop' is already a defined word, look at the link provided to see what a nettop is.
But you are right in that they probably thought they thought up a replacement word for the word 'netbook' which can't be used anymore because of copyright issues.
Ironically, NetTop is already copyrighted. NSA has the rights.
they must have received the C&D letter too...
Maybe they were afraid of that company suing them if they used the term "netbook".
Nettop is a "defined" word by whom? I don't think you'll find it in any traditional dictionary, so as far as this company is concerned they can make it mean whatever they damn well please.
The vocabulary started out reasonably enough: a "laptop" computer sits on your lap, a "notebook" computer opens like a notebook, and I suppose a "netbook" computer can open you to the Internet...
But now there's a "nettop" -- which, I guess, sits on the Internet?
good deal
but is it to much to ask for bluetooth ?
$5 buys you an USB BT dongle, not too big of an issue really?
It's a matter of principle, who wants a bluetooth dongle plugged into their computer (or taking up one of the presumably two ports) when they could've just spent that same 5 dollars to build it in.
Well, it's not like most actual nettops are too different from the specs of most netbooks from last year.
And the screen and its portability are features!
Calling yourself "CherryPal" isn't exactly Winning in the first place.
Is a Cherry Pal sort of like a F' Buddy?
wow get your mind out of the gutters please
Well, a 'cherry-boy' is a virgin/inexperienced soldier. But you are right in the name not inspiring confidence, it sounds like a Chinese company...even though the CEO is a German-born American with 25 years in the industry.
Well, okay. Now I have the term "Cherry Boy" in my head and I went looking for more info on CherryPal. Then I found their Logo. Oh dear.
great.... I have seen the logo before, but you managed to give it a whole new meaning, my friend.....
it's been a slow news day...
but W7 beat Vista in SSD/CPU usage!
You know what they say about no news?
who cares what they call it as long as u can find it when you start shopping for it. If the consumer is doing their work and the retailer does a half decent job of cataloging, then you'll find it.
YAWN. Is this news?... or even worth talking about. This has gone from being one of my favorite websites, say 18 months ago.... to being a steaming pile these days.
$250 for it?
I'm almost 100% sold.
so, like 99%?
Is this going to come with windows or linux (or both)? I guess it doesnt really matter, at $250, this is cheaper than all the competition. Considering all the components are essentially the same among different brand netbooks, I wouldn't feel to uncomfortable spending my money on a CherryPal branded computer.
They actually call it a netbook on their website: http://www.cherrypal.com/
"The Bing is a newly designed netbook..."
0.3 megapixel? Nice typo engadget
Uhh... how's that a typo?
engadget mocks silly typo ... so Matt is mocking engadget's misuse of megapixel
it should be 0.3 megapixels anything other than one megapixel must be referred to in plural form.
although that is an optimistic outlook on what Matt means to say XD
checked the site again... typo for sure... it is a 1.3 not a 0.3 megapixel webcam... man I need to stop posting late at night leads to random English correction (and then being wrong about it XD)
There's two, if the CherryPal website is correct:
Powered by the Intel Atom N270 processor, the Bing offers:
1.3M Pixel web camera
Did you guys even read the Liliputing article? This is a twofer offer:
"But there is one thing that sets the CherryPal Bing apart from the competition. For a limited time, you can pick up the netbook plus a Cherrypal C114 nettop for a combined price of $399. ... The CherryPal C114 nettop normally sells for $250, so the $399 promotion for the netbook and nettop together is a pretty good price. The CherryPal Bing netbook is expected to ship during the first quarter of 2009, while the C114 is available today."
RTFA at Liliputing, Engadget. They're INCLUDING the C114 nettop for FREE with the $400 Bing netbook.

Jeez someone pluck their site from the '80s
Jeez someone update their site. Looks like someone was bored just started putting shit together on MS word.
I might be misinformed, but if this thing really is $250 for it's specs, wouldn't it be the cheapest netbook with a 10" screen and 160GB HDD?
I know how CherryPal is about meeting their deadlines on shipping, but I think this might actually be a decent buy. Someone wanna confirm/refute?
You guys are harsh. :-D
if this netbook will actually sell at around $250.....damn i'm sold. i'll deff get one. it would me the right price for this specs tho, but MSI and ASUS and the mayor netbookers can't seem to get that ¬¬
"it would Be the right (...)" *
I wonder what Chandler has to say about this netbook.
WTF kind of name is "Cherrypal"?
I'd feel like a perv just having it in my bag.
