Rumor: 10-inch Acer Aspire One to replace 8.9-incher

We're hearing some murmurings today that Acer's planning on replacing its current, 8.9-inch Aspire One with the previously seen 10.1-inch Aspire One (the 103), phasing out the former. The new model will pack a 1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU, and 1GB of RAM, optional 3G, SDHC card slot, and 3 USB ports -- relatively standard fare, to be sure -- though it's going to come in a few sexy colors we sure do like the looks of Sure, Digitimes (the source of this rumor) isn't necessarily the most reliable paper we read in the morning with our coffee, but this particular tidbit doesn't strike us as terribly far-fetched. We'll have to (reportedly) wait until sometime in the second quarter to find out for sure, though. In the meantime: calm down.
Update: This worst-kept secret is now official, with Acer confirming plans to release its rumored 10-incher, but not saying just when or for how much. The confirmed specs are exactly what we expected -- go figure.

My 8.9inch is ample enough for my satisfaction...
My wife finds 8.9 inches satisfying too.
Your wife told me she likes my 10 incher better.
That's what I told your mother last night.
Way to jump on the bandwagon.
I JUST WANT A NEWER NETBOOK PROCESSOR FROM INTEL. SERIOUSLY, HOW MUCH VARIETY CAN THERE BE IF THERE ALL THE SAME SPEED?
I am calm.
NO YOU'RE NOT!!!!
Well, here we go, netbooks getting bigger. Next somebody will make an 8.9" again and call it a sub-netbook.
It is mainly just the screen getting bigger, which it should be, there is no reason for all that bezel around the screen.
Hoo-f'ing-ray.
Aren't netbooks going to die anyways and make room for cost effective internet tablets? That's one extinction I can't wait to happen.
And then you'll call that a mobile phone :)
And then you will die.
The answer to that one would be "no".
Lots of people like keyboards.
There may be room for convertibles like the T91 or even internet tablets with no keyboards (I kinda want one for my living room coffee table in front of the TV), but that doesn't mean netbooks are going away.
I'm about to buy a netbook in the next couple of months and I wouldn't touch a 10" one. Defies the point. I'd rather a smaller one (so to speak!)
Yeah, sure: one inch (or 1.1) more or less would totally change your "netbook experience" uh?
I agree. That's why I use an ancient NEC MobilePro and have a Sony P on order. I was going to choose among the 8.9" netbooks until the P appeared.
Try an 8.9" keyboard before you say something like that. Yes, it makes a difference.
Oh, and its 1.2 inches, ie. 10.1 inches - 8.9 inches.
10" is just too big for a netbook imho
Well that's because you're an idiot. All the 8.9" netbooks would have 10" screens if they didn't have an inch of bezel on each side.
Adam: I have only seen a one 10" netbook that's kept the same overall dimensions as it's 8.9" predecessor. I can't remember if it's the HP mini or one of the EEEPCs. Besides one of those, no one else has managed to fit a 10" screen in a 8.9" package. What ends up happening is that even the 10" screen has larger than needed bezel (although it's much much better).
Hum
Wake me when the Atom gets a refresh.
New Atom is on the way, it's call Pineview with integrated GPU, southbridge and memory controller, also is 60% smaller.
Heard its 30% more expensive too, so we'll see if this is a good thing or not. When is this thing supposed to ship? Having bought an existing netbook, I'll probably be looking again next Fall...
You guys do realize that most 10" netbooks are physically the same size as the 8.9" ones right? Most 8.9" netbooks have a huge bezel on them because the size of the keyboard limits how small they can go. With the 10" ones the bezel (for the most part) is just missing.
Good reason for me to buy a Sony P.
@insky
Exactly! The body of the 10 inch netbooks will most like be close to the same size as the 8.9 inch laptops.
Finally, someone else out there realizes the truth.
But the Vaio P isn't a netbook..
.
sorry
Dell Mini 9: 9.1" x 6.8"
Acer Aspire One: 9.8" x 6.7"
Asus Eee 901: 9.0" x 6.9"
Lenovo S10: 9.9 x 7.3
HP Mini 1000: 10.3 x 6.6
MSI Wind: 10.2 x 7.3
Samsung NC10: 10.3 x 7.3
Asus Eee 1000: 10.5 x 7.4
So, no, the 10.1" netbooks are NOT the same size as 8.9" netbooks. They are bigger.
If you're looking for a 10" Netbook, you should definitely consider the 10" Lenovo IdeaPad S10, which is on sale now for $299. Here's the link to TechDealDigger where I found the deal - http://www.techdealdigger.com/deals/lenovo-ideapad-s10-299-at-pc-connection/6201
not another Atom!! Can't wait for Nvidia to release the ion platform. then i might start thinking of buying a netbook.
doesn't the ION platform use an Atom processor? (and a 9400M)
anyways I agree, I find it hard to buy something when you know something much better is just around the corner.
Agreed, though I'll want to see battery life and price before considering this. If the first goes down much, or the second goes up much, then forget it. A little of each is okay. I'm probably going to be transcoding those Blu-Ray movies before I'd play them on a netbook anyway...
If the physical size and weight are the same as the original Aspire One, with only less Bezel to compensate for the bigger screen, then this could be a winner.
Of course bigger LCD usually equals shorter battery life.
Finally Acer sees the light... or should I say, MSI sales figures. :-)
I wish they could add something like a HDMI or optic out port or something worth all this wait!
A proper [Shift] key. Praise the Maker.
Good. I hope they do replace it so the price of hte 8.9" goes down and I can afford one... Im so broke :(
As the current market leader, with only a single netbook, are you SURE Acer will be replacing their existing product with a newer bigger more expensive model?
I think this is unlikely. The new one will have a better keyboard, and the bezel will be about the same size, and the power consumption will be higher, so it'll have a bigger battery and for all those reasons it'll cost more money.
And some people just like the smaller netbooks.
