Another Pre hands-on video with Palm's VP of design
Man, we can't get enough Peter Skillman -- check out this 25-minute Pre hands-on demo Palm's VP of design did at CES. Sure, there's some overlap with what we saw Matias Duarte demo during the announcement and the shorter Skillman video we saw yesterday, but there's also some stuff that slipped under the radar -- like the Touchstone's "gecko feet" in action at 1:48, a kinda-sorta unboxing at 2:29, an impressive email / IM / SMS multitasking demo at 12:10, and a peek at the video player at 20:09. Skillman also confirms that the Pre will do MMS, but video recording capability and Touchstone pricing remain a mystery. There are also some friendly iPhone and BlackBerry comparisons -- amusingly, he asks for a phone from the audience so he can show off the comparatively higher quality of the Pre's screen and gets a little flustered when handed the super-high-density BlackBerry Bold. Whoops! Overall, though, it's interesting to see Petey Skillz basically just use the Pre for so long -- he throws quite a bit at it, and it never seems to hiccup or slow down, which is definitely encouraging. Video after the break.

Ugly...no. Small and hard to use for people with bigger hands...yes.
It's not a looker, fair enough, but it'll be mostly hidden. And if it's a halfway-decent keyboard, who cares? I know for damn sure it'll be be better than the one on the iPhone and better than the one on my Omnia.
I like the keyboard. It is sleek and doesn't take itself too seriously : )
Yes, yes you are.
I can't wait. I want it soo bad. Yes I hope it comes with a polishing cloth because this will be loaded with fingerprints.
Man, that phone, uh, looks really, uh, sexy. I think that I, uh, would, uh, love using that, uh, UI. However, uh, I'd like to see, uh, a hands-on that, uh, explores more of the, uh, entertainment features. Uh ... yeah.
Not sure if the Pre was designed with entertainment as a top priority.
This phone is most definitely awesome. Maybe not quite awesome enough to tear me away from Android (because I'm a software developer nerd and I love the extensibility).. but still very, very impressive.
Must ... listen to Vampire Weekend. Also, I honestly feel that I need that phoneso badly that I might die without it.
I think they both better figure out the patent issues. They are both going to end up "sharing" ideas. This thing is going to court for sure.
Jeeez, that phone is going to be sweeeeet. Great video. I can't get enough of them!
Someone should have reminded him that you were videotaping tho... because the frantic, annoying hand gestures right in front of the camera were obnoxious as hell lol... but not as obnoxious as him saying "um" between every word. lol
Wow, I am picky this morning.
You might want to look up obnoxious in the dictionary.
I agree with what I think you meant though. The hands and the voice were almost too irritating to bear.
Sweet phone, can't wait for the summer.
ARRRG! Why must you make me choose between this and an android phone! I'm not saying this should run android as the WebOS looks phenomenal but I wanted android, and now I want the Pre instead :-(
Damn me for bing so fickle and damn 2009 for having so many good products to choose from!
Your decision should be simple, Android does not even compare to webOS, with the Pre you pretty much have a handheld device with desktop capabilities. With Synergy there is no need to login everything is Dynamic. It updates, cross references all by itself. You can simultaneously run MSExchange and Google, contacts, calendar, etc.
I feel your pain. I was almost set to buy an Android phone (almost got the G1, but money ran short), and now I'm back to square one, waiting for the Pre to be released.
Take a loot at http://www.precentral.net/could-android-run-jailbroken-palm-pre
I MAY be possible to also have Android on the Pre in addition to the webOS
looks like another half assed iphone.. it's nice to see palm back in the game.. just looks uhh uhh uhh uhh uhh half assed to me.
your a dick...
Seriously what is half assed about it? It's a good product, got good one handed use there. Web looked fast I must say.The guy was happy to let it be compared to others phones during the demo, was surprising that he did. imo it's a good phone.
He did say umm many times though , lol!
I love the synergy bit, that looks impressive and very handy.
I think it looks like an excellent phone - my only reserve is storage space and Palm leaving out expandable storage is a huge turn-off.
I know, the microSD card slot on the iphone is so awesome, huh?
wow, Andrew, I am just blown away by your overwhelmingly witty reply! Seriously do you make this stuff up on your own?
I will bet that your very reply was written on an iphone (that you undoubtable taped a micro SD card to the back of). But just so you know, there are MANY other smartphones out there and many of them (read: most of them) do offer expandable storage options.
this guy needs to join Toastmasters
this guy needs to join Toastmasters
JINX!
aaaaaaa
Holy f*****g s**t that thing is...
...
...
SLOW?!
Jesus christ, takes AGES to load stuff, and to people comparing that to the iPhone, im sitting here with on my hand, comparing the loading times..
Pre loading music app: Nearly 4 seconds
iPhone loading iPod app: Under a second
And i was looking forward to that phone :S
Too many attempts to do something without anything actually happening - he repeatedly does some gesture and it doesn't work.
Uhh, umm. Uhh, yeah, ummm. That's uhhh, it...yeah, umm, uhhh.
Get a better demo. This is horrible.
They have been working on this for a long time. Not half ass at all. It will return choice to the market. Just wish they would stop this one carrier crap!
*as he wipes the phone* "As the VP of design, i care about how it looks." Yet you still make the thing ultra-glossy where it will attract smudges...
Besides the gloss factor that seems to be all the rage in all electronics today this looks like an amazing device.
They should do the guy a favor and rename the product the 'Palm Uhh'.
Nice presentation otherwise, looking forward to seeing it released.
The Pre, N97 ('next gen') and maybe the E71 (currently) are the best phones out there right now...
I can't make up my mind. I am glad that some of the phones that are on my 'Most Wanted' list are not running WinMo.
I'll make it easy for you: the E71.
Because, let's be fair, it's the only one thats actually ON THE MARKET.
Anyone else notice how, at 3:20, after talking about how they don't need to pt a weight in the touchstone because of the gecko feet, he literally pries the phone of the thing.
Hahah. I guess they have some work to do on that, still.
I should mention, he pries the phone off while blatantly holding the touchstone down to the table so as not to lift it up.
The calender doesent suck like on the iphone, but it kind of looks like it does, you really need higher resolution to display the entire week and still having everything remaing readable.
I love how smooth everything is. Even during multi-tasking. I use the iPhone once and a while and it so slugish (the blackberry is an improvement, but I think the pre just waited a while and made sure they had this thing tested and ready. The only part that scared me is that he kept closing applications (wondering if he was trying to hide any performance issues).
(It did seem a bit slugish when he opened the video, but that's only expected and is handled similarly on the other devices).
I have an iPod touch, it is in support now cause it got wet or something. I don't think I want it back, I want a Palm Pré now.
Two things:
- this phone is utterly sexy
- branded-collar shirt? Neat!
This will be my next phone, providing they offer a version with bigger screen and no keyboard.
iphone who.
LOL I love how the Bold screen looked so much better..
Even the Samsung had better contrast.
To the guy who stated how long it takes to load Iphone SMS and other functions.....you're an idiot.
25 minutes video of peter skillman with the pre broken down to 10 minutes in total of the guy saying "erm" "eerrr" "aaaaahhhhh".
The pre is as slick as the iphone but Peter aint as slick as Steve.
Slick. I like it.
Anyone notice the single orientation for playing the video trailer? Just like the iPhone (in youtube).
I want to see if the browser supports flash and other embedded video/content.
All in all, looks like a very capable phone, and has me sold.
Hey, so, I noticed there are 2 versions of the Pre? The guy said one of the other phone doesn't have the magnetic induction battery. I also noticed the flash for camera disappear?
The magnetic back for the Pre is an extra-cost item (as is that induction charger).
The phone looks really "girly." Any plans to produce a more masculine looking version?
so your boyfriend can have it?
