Windows 7 gets installed on Amtek U560 UMPC, what's next?

It may not be quite the all purpose OS that Windows XP has become, but Windows 7 is certainly proving to at least be a good deal more versatile than its immediate predecessor, and folks just can't seem to stop testing its limits. One of the latest to be put through the wringer is the Amtek U560 UMPC, which is based on a pre-Atom A100 processor that clocks in at a mere 600MHz. Despite that, however, and the system's paltry 512MB RAM, the UMPC seems to have been more than up to the task, with it snagging a passable Windows 7 Experience Index rating of 1.2. Head on past the break to check it out in action.

windows 7 on a ps3?
Windows 7 on a ps2?
ps3 has a power pc architechture (ppc) windows seven as of now has 63 bit and 32 bit architechture, I highly doubt they would ever do a ppc version, no reason for them to at all
Better yet:
Windows 7 on a "smartphone". Wouldn't it be great if "Windows Mobile 7" was "Windows 7"? This would be one of the last big steps into integrating the Mobile PC (aka Laptops) with the Cell phone! It's already happened with Cameras and cell phones, Video/Music players and cell phones, PDAs and cell phones, even watches and cell phones (when was the last time you wore a watch?)
As soon as it's an option, I'm down for it.
My 'dream' setup: Intel Atom CPU, mPCIe SSD (16-32GB), Li-Ion battery that takes up the entire back plate (user replaceable), OLED screen, WiFi/BT/LTE/GSM, miniUSB port, rotatable 5MP camera, and a modest 1GB integrated RAM.

I assume you mean x86_64 and x86_32 (to use the vendor-neutral terms); actually, it's a little-known fact that NT was originally intended to be portable across many different architectures, but at some point they decided it would be too much effort. I personally think they should supporting alternative architectures, mainly because it would allow them to cut into Linux's marketshare with ARM/MIPS/BBQ-based devices, and possibly encourage better programming among developers (most Windows programmers have probably never seen the word 'portable' in their lives ;). Also, that should have been a semicolon after 'architechture' (which was misspelled btw), not a comma. Here's a helpful guide I made nine days ago for anyone who's confused about that issue: http://i42.tinypic.com/zn4iet.jpg
It still does. For instance, the Itanium. It just has to be modified slightly to support specific instruction sets. The problem is that even if they released an ARM-compatible version, you sitll wouldn't be able to install any of the bazillion Windows applications because they're compiled for x86-compatible architectures.
i want it on my ipod touch. that would be a feat
Did anyone try to install Vista on a UMPC?
Yeah, you can get samsung q1 ultra preinstalled with vista. It runs like poop (ie, can't use Skype, as it stutters and becomes unresponsive when you use the webcam). I doubt win7 is going to save the day for the 600mhz devices.
Well the Samsung q1 ultra (2gb) running windows 7 beta runs like a dream. (just remember to update drivers or disabled wlan, or you processor will run at 100% all the time)
7 still uses the same amount of memory as vista at idle. xp still idles at about half of what either one uses.
Vista is unreasonably put down. And 7 is ridiculously over glorified.
Not quite. The memory management of vista and the like is very different from XP! Only because task manager shows it's not free doesn't mean it's unavailable! As an example, I had the same amount of free memory under Windows Server 2008 with 2 and 4 GB of RAM. But the system isn't slow or anything!
It actually seems to use about 20-30% less on my machine.
Nonsense.
It only uses more if there's free RAM available.
With 1GB it idles at 450MB, with 2GB it's more like 700.
After all these time people still don't understand vista and win7 memory management? and superfetch?!
I know I always laugh when people complain that Vista is so resource heavy that it takes up 30% of their RAM when it's just idling, even though they've been explained application loading a million times.
Here's a graphic that explains how Windows 7 (and vista) utilizes your ram:

well i put it on my computer i got in 2000. It has 600Mhz and less and 512 memory when you take into account the shared memory from the video sharing. it goes down to like 300 something. still runs with aero, kinda slow, but it works perfectly under basic.
Nice to se they used a proper computer to edit the video though...
Nice~~~~i like it...
and I can't even get it to install completely on my Mac Pro...
dude.. what ru even talking abt.? its been up n running on my penryn MBP ever since it was leaked..
Leaked? Umm, it's still available to legally download...
I think he means he got it before it could be legally downloaded. There was like a 2 week gap between the time it started showing up on bittorrents and the time it was oficially and legally downloadable from Microsoft.
Holy Crap! he got Aero to work.
It seems someone likes Glenn Miller as well.
I know!...And the VAIO pPhone can't even get Aero running!
nice, I like the touchscreen :D
one step closer to the windows 7 multitouch netbook I'm waiting for...
if thats what you want just install win7 on a fujitsu u820
fujitsu u820's not a multitouch tablet, and the screen is way too small.
nice music !

Anyone who knows their way around vlite can make a netbook/umpc optimised vista build that fits on one CD and chews up less than 3gb on install. I dont mind W7 but the buzz round it being superior to vista is rubbish. To illustrate how theyre not supremely dissimilar, you can even use vlite to strip down W7.

Tell people the full story engadget.
I installed Windows 7 on my Fujitsu U810 (Intel A110 800mhz cpu, 1gb ram). It ran quite well but unfortunately none of the tablet buttons worked even with the Vista drivers, so I had to revert back. I was pretty impressed it could though.
The thing that impressed me most about 7 was the handwriting recognition. It made almost no mistakes in understanding my illegible scrawl. It was something that microsoft have done very well, and this is coming from someone who is usually very critical of them.
Hi, I'm mahjong
The URLs at Youtube for the video with english subtitles is: http://es.youtube.com/watch?v=ptof6fHOWSs
But looks like Youtube is not working right now.
The installation process was very easy and now I'm running XP and W7 in dual boot. I was astonished how Windows 7 Ultimate works in that UMPC (CPU Intel A100 600 MHz) just imagine if Microsoft delivers a Windows7 prepared for UMPCs... will be even faster!!!
I am using Windows 7 virtually on my MacBook and it is working great so far...!
windows 7 on a gameboy color
Windows 7 FTW!
Garbajjjjj... Check this out... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWT1MQp6SXc
Engadget keeps posting such crap these days... I don't get it...?
Yes your link is garbage, so what's your point exactly?
yawn...

Previously to install W7 in my Amtek U560 I did some tests in Parallels on my iMac 20" (the one shown in the video). My problem was that the W7 works like a charm except Aero. I wasn't expecting the Aero being working in the U560 so it was a surprise since in my far more powerful iMac wasn't working.
What virtualization program are you using? Did you manage to make Aero to work on it?
Do you think Windows 7 will be able to install on ps3 ???
I don't know CezarisLT don't think so. Microsoft develops their OS to run in Intel CPUs and compatible CPUs of other makers like AMD. Is the Cell CPU from IBM which you find in the PS3 compatible with Intel's ones? Don't think so. So I don't think this W7 could run on a PS3.
Anyway... just try. That what I did. Everyone told me that the minimun CPU requirement for Windows7 was an 1 GHz processor... but I tried and happens to work in an 600 Mhz one.
