Rather than making the customary press release blast across media outlets, ASUS just loosed its newest Eee PC -- the
1000HE ("E," as in
extended) -- into pre-order limbo via its official ASUS Eee PC Facebook group. The latest 10-inch LED backlit Eee PC with new chicklet keyboard ships with 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0, and a 160GB hard disk with an additional 10GB of Eee Online storage. The inclusion of Intel's 1.66GHz Atom N280 processor and ASUS' own Super Hybrid Engine battery conservation tech makes this the most powerful and longest lasting Eee PC ever. Members of the Eee PC Facebook group receive a $25 discount off the $399 pre-order price. Sweet... but you might find yourselves wishing you'd
waited for a touchscreen model whenever Windows 7 rolls around.

This is it. This is the Netbook I've been waiting for. I want it now, and none of those sites have it for pre-order.
Well, for me I am only waiting for the touchscreen version of this! Especially the keyboard looks nice!
Now, I'm trying to find a Canadian seller who has it..
Adam, I've checked the store. You can order 1000HE today.

Oh, how fugly!
Don't be so hard on yourself.
This isn't a bad looking piece at all.
I think it looks just like the rest of them when it's closed... and outer beauty is all that matters
@ strider
That's what she said!
FINALLY a Shift key that's to the left of the arrow keys and is bigger than my fingernail.
AND the left Ctrl and Fn buttons are in their correct places.
$374 for 1.66GHZ, 160 GB and 9.5 hours of battery life is a good deal.
I preordered from J&R, got it for $340. I used the Live Cash back program. It'll be more than $340 if you're from NY (taxes and junk).

9.5 hour battery life!! It's champion for long trip netbook. :)
My Acer aspire one only has a 2.5 hrs battery!! EeePCs are great with their
"One day computing" batteries!
BTW, it has an Apple keyboard ! :)
uh... apple keyboard? maybe like sony keyboard since they did it first
Either way, it's a good keyboard, at least in terms of feel. I think it's very good, but speed testing versus my old $10 logitech keyboard begs to differ.
Thats one butt ugly Netbook.
9.5 hour battery or not...i would not be seen dead with that...i guess that explains why i like Macs....
You don't like this , because you're a fanboy, that's all!
read carefully, that's 9.5 with the following:
* 40% LCD brightness
* WiFi OFF
* BT OFF
* "Power saving mode" which means slow processing, etc...
* Camer OFF (no biggie)

These are exactly what I'd buy a *net*book for. What's the point of having a netbook when I can't even turn on my wireless?
Knock an hour or two off the battery-life and you still have a great long lasting netbook. When this comes with a touchscreen I'm getting it instantly.
Whoops, nevermind, just clicked the link to the T101H and holy crap. But this battery life is still awesome. :D
Was about to say that this seems pretty good, but after hearing that the 9.5 hours is only with the settings as mentioned by JC, I'll pass. My current laptop can manage that with the $40 extended battery, and it won't make me suffer for it.
My 6-cell battery on my netbook makes for an unsightly bump under it and raises it about half an inch off the table. I can only imagine that this 9.5-hour battery will angle the netbook that only Evil Knievel would appreciate.
Nope. Asus says it's flush with the system
Blame the laws of physics.
damn i just ordered an eee 904ha
bad luck xdigitalfantasyx
Typically how long can a pre-order last before the item is actually released?
Awesome!! This is finally the netbook for me. I said that about the HP 1000, then the Dell Mini 12, then the Lenovo S10, then I fell in love with the 2140, but this time I mean it. Really, this is the one I'm going to get. ...hey look, a chicken.
I want that so badly! That keyboard looks AWESOME!
I only issue I see is the weight. Over 1/2 a lb over the wind or about 20% more weight. May be minor but I thought I would point this out.
Note that this also has the GN40 for graphics, widely rumoured to be a new video-decoding GPU+Northbridge+Southbridge chip.
is this the one made to run HD video. with only little help from the cpu?
GN40 chipset? How do you know this for sure? I have yet to see anything official on that.
My bad, that is the 1000DN with optical drive. The chipset for this one has not been announced.
I'm beginning to think that it must have the GN40 because that chipset is supposed to allow a MUCH smaller motherboard and that would explain how they could fit a much large battery in the same case.
This seems to be THE netbook I would get right now.
As soon as they put the guts of this machine in their CES announced T91 or T101 tablest, I'm sold !!! I can't imagine that they'd use anything less than the N280 and (hopefully) the GN40 in those new netbooks since they are to be released well after the 1000HE. The Asus multi-Touch OS add-on looks fantastic:

Anyone know where we can preorder the T91 or T101H?
Hey Guys!
lets wait for the touch screen windows-7 version. we also get USB 3 and BT 2.1, WiFi N standard by then. The battery life sounds better nowwith the new SHE.
From what I've read:
http://blog.laptopmag.com/hands-on-with-asus-convertible-eee-pc-t91-and-t101h
the tablets should be out in a couple of months. USB3 won't be out until very late 2009 or 2010. If the T91/101 have the guts of the 1000he, I'm not waiting for Win7 and/or USB3.
..
I can't find the pre-order anywhere, I joined the facebook group, and there is a link to an official page at asus' site which lists the venders you can pre-order it from and get $25 off, but none of the venders listed even have the product available on their site, as a pre-order or otherwise. What gives?
It's now available at amazone
When is the Ion platform coming?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Nvidia's ION platform so far is slated for nettops, not netbooks. But if we can get a Geforce 9400 or equilvalent in these puppies for less than $500 later in the year, hell fucking yes!
This model already looks great by itself.
Starting to seem like a fake post now. Unprofessional of them to make this sort of announcement without backing it up with any, uhm, truth. Very disappointing also that you can never contact anyone from Asus to verify this sort of crap.
Sorry, when I say "them" I meant Asus, not Engadget.
I called Asus, this model IS upgradeable to 2GB memory, and it has the same chipset as previous models, so no hardware video decoding per the rumor.
its good, but there will be another modelout next wee
thats the thing with asus Eee, they make great little netbooks, but they make them to rapidly
they shouldn't release a new model everyday, but make a really good, cheap, fast little Eee
I can't till all laptops have 9.5 hours of batterys
