South Koreans could see 1Gbps web connections by 2012
The world at large still has aways to go before it catches up with Sweden's Sigbritt Löthberg, but South Korea's hoping to take a baby step in that direction by 2012. According to a new proposal by the Korea Communications Commission, it's aiming to make broadband ten times faster in its nation in under three years, and according to the plan, it'll take some $24.6 billion in order to make it happen. The central government is looking to cough up around a third of that, with the rest having to come from private telecommunications companies. We're told that the initiative could create upwards of 120,000 jobs, and citizens will be able to kiss their 100Mbps connections goodbye as they replace 'em with 1Gbps alternatives. The KCC hopes the move will enable more interactive TV services to be delivered along with additional e-commerce and home schooling; South Korean residents, however, are probably just stoked about lowering their ping times.[Via GigaOM]

Indeed, why couldn't the government take up the issue of building better, faster, cheaper internet connections for the US. To bad Bush isn't still in office. I'm sure if you told him if we have slow internet connections then the terrorist win this would have been sorted out faster than they could find Osama Bin Laden.....on second thought moving to South Korea sounds like a move viable option.
It isn't the responsibility of the government to build out a private Internet infrastructure. That's the job of private industry. The best thing the government could do is stop supporting the telcos and the media industry with specialized deals that help keep them competitive without actually competing. Getting the government involved isn't the solution, it is the problem.
Few hundred billion?? We don't need that much! Even the ambitious project from the telecom workers lobby only required 100 Billion total over 5 years.
Even $50 billion in federal grants and no-interest loans to telecom companies would do wonders to lay new fiber to cities and suburbs.. I think it should be owned as a public utility and then leased out to private telecom companies to actually run the networks..
I don't know about this 1000M+
if it is 1000mb mean it is 1gb.am i right?
if yes then here in hong kong they are already selling.
here is the link.

Yes... but S. Korea is talking about for everyone...
and those prices for 100mb/s connections are ridiculously expensive compared to Korea.
I'm in Slovenia and i got a 20/20 Mbps link last year, i can't imagine what more i could wish for. I can already download movies faster than i can watch them. And my home WiFi (802.11g) can't take much more anyway. 1 Gbps is overkill.
"1 Gbps is overkill."
You could download all of the bay (if ya know what I mean) in a couple days! :p
Well i could, but i'd have nowhere to put it. If i calculated this right, i could fill up my 1 TB drive in 5 days at my current 20 Mbps running at full speed. If i had 1 Gbps, i could fill it up in under 2 hours and a half. Then what would i do? :P
Buy more harddrives? :p
They're pretty cheap nowadays.
$24.6 billion, why the hell doesn't Barack Obama just throw that into our stimulus while he is at it. We are spending close to $850 billion on useless stuff anyway, why not add another $25 billion for something useful.
DUDE ! there is no way in HELL you're comparing South Korea and the USA ! (I mean in terms of infrastructure :))
South Korea is like 200 times smaller !
Might what to add a few trillions on geography lessons for all ?
Don't forget the extra 2.5-5 Billion for everyone to get a coupon for a new router.
Actually 93x smaller
US-9,161,923km^2
SK-98,480km^2
A big difference yes and I agree with your statement.
More like, just drop the article on Obama's desk to begin with and then he'll take care of the rest.
Miss South Carolina got your maps?
Hot damn! Anything faster than 6Mbps is still pretty expensive out here and I'd probably have to shell out an entire month's paycheck to get that kind of blazing speed!
6Mbs is expensive in the US...
But in S. Korea.. a 100Mb/s connection is like $30ish?
Just the thought of such Internet speeds make me jizz. Unfortunately if the rest of the world doesn't have these speeds too it's useless. All the places I visit on the web would still be serving content at 10 Mbps the most.
Heh, how fast do you really need for Starcraft?
I get no pings on a 20/5 FIOS hookup.
Dear South Korea,
Please share your secrets with Verizon Communications.
Thanks,
FIOS Customers Everywhere.
The amount of bandwidth has nothing to do with ping times.
you guys have obviously never been to pakistan....
The max we get here is
.

2Mbit (256KB/s) and thats also for a freakin 4k rupees per month (~ US$50)
last time i was in pakistan it took 5 mins to load the google home page
"These guys really need FasterFox" I thought...
lol quit blamin the fox dude....
our government doesnt even allow paypal.....get what m trying to say here?...
humm, I think we have that ages.
2 Hong Kong ISPs already rolled out 1000Mbps services ages ago, although international speed is capped to 20 Mbps by HKBN. The other guy does offer 1000Mbps local and intentional.
You lucky basters have Hulu....

Wow, I still have 1.5 Mb/ps here in the chicago suburbs.
consider yourself lucky. I got 1 mbps download 128 kbps upload in the Montreal suburbs. Canadian ISP's (especially Bell/Sympatico) suck
What about upload speed? That's the key to fluid two-way video.
Kudus to America for being behind the developing country again but having the arrogance to think wee are the best
I'd be happy with 20mbps, much less 100mbps. I can not even fathom 1gbps.
In other news.. South Korea has a 10 meg link to the internet.
-b
Yeah, enjoy your Gb. I'll stick to my 2Mb ADSL connection for $70 USD. :D
In 2012 people in the USA might be able to get a 50MB connection. You'll have to pay $150 a month for it though.
America, If we aren't ripping our people off we're doing something wrong.
tsss... We've had 1Gbit in Sweden since 2006 in places like Stockholm and Lund. They are also working with Cisco on a 540Mbit fast wireless network in Lund! I have 100/10 for 22$ a month.. Old news guys =)
Screw ATT and their 1mbps for $35 a month plan!!!
My neighbor's time warner connection is 7Mb I. love wifi!!
125 MB per second, damn im ready for that, shit you'll never see the US shoot for that, and if you do what else is new were get a fucking lock on a limit
So someone want to tell me where there's even a server that will give you a good 20mbps let alone 1gbps? Yes I know their's torrents, but I really think we need to work on getting are servers faster before isp's start bumping up speeds into the just plain overkill range.
Those lucky motherF@ckers I get 16kb/s DL speed tops, I can get 300KB/s Speed but it drops instantly to 12kb/s
I want faster internet...
if not 1 gbps, think it will max out at 500mbps.even if 500 mb of data is downloaded in a second, no harddisc, even an solid state one can write that amount to the drive in a second.so who's gonna store all that ?? why do people get overwhelmed by numbers ?? :|
If you can afford a 1Gb/s connection, the equipment to handle it, and has space for everything he's downloading, I'm sure he can set up a striped set of SSD's and have plenty of RAM available to cache it all. And besides, even if you have a Gigabit connection, in order to use it you'd need to be connecting to servers who have a gigabit of bandwidth to spare for you for your pron downloads.
