BlackBerry Blowout: Storm vs. Bold vs. Curve 8900

After careful consideration, our takeaway here is that the Bold feels like the odd man out in terms of design direction for the company. It's clear that the Curve and Storm represent the new look for RIM's phones, while the Bold -- however handsome you may find it -- comes off as a bit out of shape and chintzy in comparison. The plastic metal bezel seems cheap by comparison to the Curve's similarly styled (yet refined) implementation, which bares more than just a passing resemblance to the Storm.

Still, all things being the same we thought that the UI response time was faster and more precise on the Bold (when compared directly with the Curve). We actually found the trackball movement with the same settings to be less accurate on-screen, though what the cause could be is anyone's guess. The pixel density on the Curve is considerably tighter in comparison to the Bold, and it borrows some of the Storm's UI tweaks, though doesn't improve on the Bold's abysmal browser (as we noted in our review).

Between the three phones, there's a noticeable difference in display color temperature, much like we saw with the iPhone and iPhone 3G -- the Storm and Curve have a noticeably "yellower" hue than the Bold. It's difficult to say if one is better than the other, but the blacks seemed more defined on the latter two phones.

The keyboard differences on the Curve and Bold are also noticeable, and puzzling. The Bold very much subscribes to RIM's 8800 design, with some spacing and font changes, while the Curve relies on the split key design used on previous models (hello 8300!) which we find is actually easier to type on. Regardless, our resident BlackBerry fanatic, Jacob, claims that Curve keyboards hurt to type on after prolonged use -- we have yet to experience this damaging side effect.
Ultimately, you're buying into incredibly similar products here, especially between the Curve and Bold -- that's more of a carrier decision than anything else. Even with the Storm, the general experience is roughly the same (if a little more frustrating), but it's surprising to see how far RIM has moved beyond the Bold's styling in such a short period of time. One thing is clear, however: whichever phone you choose, your email is going to be totally awesome.

Haha, you said 'blow'!
hehe
Haha, you said "I'm an idiot."
No? Well it was implied
Roasted!
Mr. iEye, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone on this site is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
@Nelagster: none of these comments were at all funny, but yours is the worst by far with the blatant plagiarizing of a commonly known e-thug.txt
no obama phone?
@Nelagster
A simple "wrong" would have been fine.
Great Billy Madison reference, btw.
@Nelagster
Nice Billy Madison reference, + 10 points for you sir.
Haha, you said "bares"...
.
Sorry, just trying to stay with the same style... I think you meant "bears more than a passing resemblance to..." Yes... I know... pedant....
very interesting!
I haven't read this yet, but I'm going to go out on a limb here and say, the Storm gets it's ass kicked by these two.
Never mind. I thought they were going to actually, you know, compare the phones.
That title really threw me off.
I've not met you in person yet, but my guess is you got your ass handed to you in the playground as a kid?
personally, i was hoping they would have a really saucy threesome and one would end up giving birth to a cool device. in the end, i feel like i've been victimized by a myspace angle.
I've never met you either, Nick. But, I'm willing to bet you made a pretty stupid phone purchase, and have to defend it every time you're reminded of it.
Two of these look quite similar and the fact that they all are BlackBerry's make me even less interested. However this might be the best forum to ask the question...
What is all the rage over BlackBerries?
I'm running an HTC Touch Diamond on the Sprint network. I've got to believe my unit can do everything your units can do and more. I also understand you pay additional data rates too. What is that all about. My unlimited 3G data is included in my plan.
Just please help me understand what makes BlackBerries so popular...seriously, I'm trying to understand.
Blackberries do what they are supposed to do, and they do it quick.
Windows Mobile is an everything, including the kitchen sink, OS. True, it can do, literally, anything, but it doesn't mean it does that fast, and well.
I for one think the Bold is the best out of these devices.
If only they put the functionality on the design of the 8900...
sooooo which dumb phone should i buy?
The iPhone, babes.
Well, well, well, what do we have here?
My favorite two uneducated internet trolls who have lost their senses of reality.
If you don't like the product then shut up and leave.
Oh, and ILoveApple?
You insulted the iPhone by calling it a dumbphone. Collegeguy13 said what DUMB phone...
Tools.
i would just like to point out im not calling the blackberrys dumb, but seeing as i have no need for a smartphone which dumb phone should i buy?
Sorry about that. I misunderstood your comment.
It really depends on which network you want to switch to, or you are currently in.
For example, Verizon has the LG Dare, which one of the best "dumbphones" out there. (Along iwht the Glyde, Voyager, Etc.
AT&T has the Samsung Eternity and the Quickfire. All of these phones are considered "dumbphones", but there very good phones.
You might also consider what you want in them like call quality, camera, 3G, etc.
iphone 3g?
no, it's about SMART phones....sorry.
iApple.
you disgust me.
perish.
Truth be told, I was frustrated with the Storm for awhile but after some of the o/s leaks things have gotten much better. Can't say my experience with either of the 8900 or the Bold would be better since I haven't played around with them much, but I'm getting happier and happier with my Storm...especially after Slacker radio support came through yesterday.
I thought Engadget was going to review the Storm as well. I found it surprisingly absent from many of the (few) comparisons.
Agreed.
I agree. Looks like it stuck around for the photos, but it didn't appear much in the article. But then, there's a more compelling set of comparisons to be made between the two QWERTY candybars than there would be between either of them and a touchscreen phone.
Yea this is like the one where they "compared" the iPhone, the G1, and the Pre and they almost totally left out the G1. Not that I really care since I have AT&T but it's interesting to read about ALL the phones...
So what would be recommended for a first time Blackberry buyer? I'm very tech savvy and usually my last "new" tech purchase is always the phone. Now that I have my brand new tv, receiver, blu-ray, laptop etc... It's time to upgrade my moto razr lol. Which wold be the best? This article doesn't really review much. Just gives links to other separate reviews.
I've read though, that the Curve has a much better camera, better keyboard, more internal memory, better/brighter screen etc... But the only thing it lacks is 3G. I've never really ever used internet on phones. I have full WiFi at home, and my university is a hot-spot all over and I rarely will be travelling and even then, if I am, I have my laptop. Will not having 3G do anything besides being slower on the internet?
What I mean is, if I dont really browse the net on my phone or anything, will the network on the Curve suffice? Or will having 3G be amazing?
Go for the 8900 then, I personally have the bold, and 3g is great if you arn't near a wifi hot spot, and really I like the bold keyboard better (have had a 8300 for a year, and didn't like it as much either) but the screen, camera, size, and UMA which this article doesn't mention (uses the wifi hotspot as a cell tower to make calls for better reception in buildings or outlying areas) is HUGE and the bold doesnt support it... just don't buy a storm :D
If you have been using a razr, why do you think you need a Blackberry at all, regardless the model? It sounds like you are getting it just for the name. It does not sound like you need a smartphone at all...
Get the Bold, WIFI, 3G, BT A2DP, MicroSD slot and a FAST processor, multi-tasking (can run several apps in background for REAL and it doesn't play games doing it, it's fast and very responsive, they stay connected...) interchangeable battery, decent enough camera with a flash, records video/audio notes, can hold up to 16GB MicroSD and 1GB onboard, it's a real beast in a small package for sure. I had an iPhone 3G, and then got the Bold, and there is no comparison for me, the Bold has way more features I actually use and it's very solid in performing more than one task at a time, the Bold VERY MUCH impressed me. It handles everything I've "thrown" at it. The speakerphone is amazingly loud and clear and has a bit of bass to it even, you can conference cal, place people on hold while dialing another etc., it sounds killer!! I can run email, BB messenger, Bee Jive (IM client) Facebook, Myspace, and have many other apps open and it doesn't flinch a bit!! If I get an email or message from any of these services it prompts me almost instantly. I can access my Slingbox at home too!! I'd go play with one if you are serious about it, It amazed me for sure and using it right now! Once setup for WIFI and BT pairing etc it just "gets" it, I jump in my car and hit play on the BB and it wirelessly streams through deck in car (need to have a BT deck though of course) and when calls come in it pauses the music, plays a ring through speakers in car, I can answer the phone, talk a bit, hang up and it returns to rocking! (most BT phones do it this way, but it never hiccups or anything, my old Palm Treo 755p crashed half the time I tried this, as well as my wife's "something or other "el-chepo" phone. I cannot say enough good things about the Bold...amazing!
Well, ask yourself a few questions.
- Do you use Calendar or Contact apps on your computer/on an exchange server for work?
- Do you use email a lot and would prefer access to it on mobile?
- Do you find yourself needing to use the web a lot while out?
If the answer is NO to any of them, a Curve is just overkill. Sure it might sound cool and look cool, but you'll be paying a lot for a phone you may or may not use fully. You might just be well off with an iPod Touch, if you have WiFi everywhere. That way you don't have to pay monthly fees to use the damn device.
No point in comparing. They all suck!
You obv. haven't played with any of them, maybe the Storm sucks, I dunno. But the Bold is simply amazing and very far from sucking, not even in the same league as a phone that sucks!! It's one of the best "smartphones" out there and I mean ACTUAL smartphones! I've tried many, Palm, Centro, iPhone, Tilt, HTC, Nokia, N95 etc. etc and Bold kills em all in features, stability and speed, so your comment is certainly unfounded and you certainly haven't tried one out to state such a stupid comment.
vs Rhodium? hopefully someday soon! :-)
You guys should have thrown the Pearl Flip in there for good measure. Between the 4, you've got a berry for just about every taste.
"berry" "taste"
see what I did there....because clearly I didn't when I wrote it
yay for unintentional puns
yay indeed
Heh, crap, I thought it would enter my name as K-cuss nupru, oY! That was the whole joke...didn't quite work out like I was going for.
Completely useless. You hardly even mention the Storm. What was the point of this post?
proving that the Storm sucks so bad it isnt even worth mentioning.
ILoveApple,
"God" is a singular, proper noun implying the one Supreme Being, the creator and ruler of the universe.
I think you meant to say "god," as in, "Apple is your god."
As for rationality... Which is more rational, believing in the answer of creation and the purpose of life or believing in a multitude of theories that have changed numerous times throughout history? I will stop here because this is no place for a debate of religion, but I had to get my two cents in.
As for the blackberries go, I love my 8830. The Storm isn't my cup of tea and the other two are not offered through Verizon. Hopefully someday the Bold will be though. It looks like a pretty nice phone.
You're trying to respond rationally to someone who is clearly an abrasive fanboy and comment troll. Admirable, but foolish.
ILoveApple, you may love Apple. But Apple's a corporation, and it really only loves your money. And with the prices they charge for hardware, I'm sure they get it. I love a diversity of gadgets, which conversely means I hate fanboys like you.
Good day.
maybe I'm missing something here., but what was the point of this article? That you could waste everyone's time reading old reviews?.How about updating the phones with latest hardware and software revisions and title the article "updated Blackberry comparo"....
Would it kill you to give a leveled picture of the phones to show the comparative depths??
The angle given looks quite deceptive and doesn't show the true pocket bulge comparison that im looking for!
On that note, I would take the curve for its "Mic" capabilities (maybe called talkback?), but the sexy bold for its classy looks...
Rim needs to clarify the software problems or whatevertheheck people are talking **** about the Storm for. Besides that, or a software update that touts increased performance, why would I bother wasting time to find out for myself??... One million phones sold or not!
Nokia E71 . Kills all 3.
