More rumored Dell Mini 10 details, colors surface

A few retailer slip-ups aside, we haven't heard a whole lot about the Dell Mini 10 since it was unveiled at CES, but it looks like that's now starting to change, with this supposedly authentic slide offering some further details on the netbook. Among the new bits of information is word that the Mini 10 will apparently have two display options: the 1366 x 768 option we heard about initially, and a more conventional 1024 x 576 WSVGA option for those less concerned with 720p content. You'll also apparently be able to get your choice of 1.3GHz or 1.6GHz Atom processors, one of six different color options, a 3-cell or 6-cell battery, and apparently even an "optional DVD slice," although there's unfortunately no pics or further details on it. There's also still no word on a price or release date, but let's hope those details are the next to surface, officially or otherwise.

1366x768? YES!
YES
FINALLY another netbook option with a higher res screen. I would never use 1024x600 or whatever is getting thrown on most of these.
I realize its a balance between pixel density and readability of text, but 1366 resolution should be fine on a 10 inch. I have 1280x800 on my old 12-inch 700m and it's more than readable. I can always just enlarge the text in my browser with a ctrl-scroll.
This might be my next purchase.
I want ION in this fucker.
I somewhat agree: I would have preferred 1280x800, but will take 1366x768
Does anyone else think it's stupid that netbooks that can barely decode 720p video are being put out with 16:9 screens?
I assume they're switching to 16:9 screens for the same reason as bigger laptops: because it allows them to share the glass with TVs. In this case maybe its TVs for the kitchen or the back seat of a car, but its still cheaper to use the same glass.
I'll have to see a 1366x768 10.1" screen and see what I think. My 1024x600 display is CLEARLY too small for web browsing, esp in the vertical, so anything more would be helpful as long as its not too squint inducing.
@Fr0: Lots of lower-res content is still in 16:9... Like SD anime...
I hope its soon. I'm going for the NC10 in a couple of weeks. I'm still open for other options until then. This looks like a possible option if its released soon.
When are the dual-core Atom netbooks coming?
cool!
Do Dell slides generally have pictures with white backgrounds overlaid onto slides with black backgrounds like that? And a netbook with HDMI? Either this is fake, or Dell have taken another step towards the notebook end of the scale.
well, they have had some pretty bad ppts in the past
But a multitouch trackpad? Surely that would only work with Windows 7? (Which of course, wont be available on it).
All recent Eee's have multitouch-pads which work just fine under XP....with the right drivers, anything's possible.
Agreed. How reliable is this source engadget?
Last time laptops leaked (XPS 13 and 16) the slides had a similar formatting with the black background.
This is normal. Those are internal Dell slides, not intended for you and me. Studio XPS 13 and 16 slides were even worse, but we can see now that they were the real thing.
Im bored of all these "cookie cutter" specced netbooks, they all use the same atom cpu, they all more or less have the same size and resolution screen, same amount of ram, etc.. they just have different dressings.
The res in this one is not the same, besides that, I totally agree with you.
No, all others have a crappy resolution screen, and this one stands out.
I've been visiting Engadget like a hawk watching it's prey for news on this machine.
I really want to get one fully decked out. I want the best options besides the TV Tuner. Didn't know it had HDMI but that's terrific. Curious about that 'dvd slice'. Sounds like a thin external DVD drive.
I don't know much about these netbooks though as far as real usage besides watching youtube and updating facebook while playing music on itunes, but is it powerful enough to handle basic programming tools or play roms and emulators from 32bit days and back?
Even the very first Eee 701 could play Quake 3 Arena and N64 emulators. I think this will handle Sega Genesis games just fine.
yes, you can play modern games (but not the big ones of course) on that easily. Warcraft 3, morrowing, call of duty... it will play ok on that.
What is the purpose of an HD quality screen resolution when the netbook processor/graphics cannot adequately support HD? Am I missing something here?
It can play 720P and sometimes 1080i but doesn't support 1080P. So yes you are missing something.
The Silverthrone cpu/chipset can handle HD video fine, it is just the older 945G based ones that have no hardware acceleration.
Is HD video really the only thing worthy of a hi-res screen to you? As long as it can fill all the pixels with a 2D desktop then the added screen real-estate will be much appreciated regardless of high-end performance.
Yeah you may be missing something. How about being able to see more with documents and web browsing?
I can say i want one of these things - i mean a netbook. Here in Romania their price is not that appealing. I mean you add a a little more money and you get a full blown 15,4 inch notebook. I will maybe get one when these little computers will cost - let's say half of what a notebook costs.
It's not just in Romania dude.
Everywhere in the world a crappy 15 incher costs less than a good netbook.
My vaio TT is 11 inches but costs like 5 or 6 17".
Did'nt your mommy tell you that size don't matter?
...but you can't measure the performances of your vaio with the performances of an eee pc with a 900 mhz processor.
You are totally missing the point dude. Netbook is not made to sit on your desk all day long, like your 15" notebook. The netbook is to be carried around [mostly], that's why it's small and light.
Hope it doesnt look crappy with the 6-cell battery.
So this beast with have a hard drive?
I don't own a netbook but would seriously concider this bar one reason:
I would want to take it 'bout in my bag etc, but does the hard drive get damaged after a few knocks. Becuase i would rather have an sdd and be sure?
Thanks
@anyone who reads this comment
I meant this beast will have a hard drive
sorry!
I thought it was 1280x720, what a disappointment!
I don't understand why that's disappointing to you? This will still play native 720 video perfectly...
more is better, no kidding. You will not notice the scale anyway. and if you are really really anal, you can play it at 100% anyway with small black bars on the sides.
Dude, most of the HD Plasma displays before last year were 768 pixels vertically. You just didn't know (apparently). They handle 720p content just fine with upscaling. And the small change, if you allow it, won't make most objects visibly taller than usual--its only 6%.
I think he only saw the 1024x576 and didn't see there is an option for 1366x768.
Hotness! Probably will be my first netbook with the 3g option and 6cell battery. Anyone know how hard it will be to replace the drive with an SSD? I don't want a netbook with a regular HD.

The page is inconsistent. It says 21mm thin on one side and on the other side on the specs it says 24-28mm. I hope the right one is 21mm, that surprisingly thin. Also, it says 1.3kg on one side and 2.2 lbs on the other, and that not the right conversion. Plus, 2.5" HDD of 120GB and 160GB is rather unlikely for a netbook.
There are LOTS of netbooks (like the Samsung NC10 for example) with 2.5" drives. And 120GB or 160GB is perfectly normal. The price difference (if you bought the drive, not what Dell would pay) between the cheapest SATA drive at around 80GB and a 160GB drive is like $5.00.
I hope the 2.2 lbs / 1.3 kg discrepancy corresponds to switching from a 3 to a 6 cell battery. But that's wishful thinking...
They messed up the keyboard again. The prototype they showed off last month had the right-side shift key where it belongs (below the Enter key), but this one seems to share the Eee's, IdeaPad's, and Wind's fatal flaw -- an up-arrow where touch typists expect the shift key to be.
Yawn.
do you think if they put ion in this that it could play sims 3 when it comes out?
An open letter to Dell:
Why the half-upgrade? Your notebook uses STEC SSDs - the closest thing to SLCs. Despite using great harddrives, why not pump up to the new Intel processor?
(and contrarywise, an open letter to Super Talent):
The Asus 1000HE is phenomenal. But why are your SSDs MLC? :(
Why can't we get a netbook with the Atom 1.66 and an SLC SDD? Why are these two components so hard to pair?!
